When LDL levels in the blood are elevated, the oxidation of LDL may lead to the accumulation of fatty slabs on the inside of the arterial walls. This is the leading theory of the development of atherosclerotic plaque. The elevated levels of oxidized LDL stimulate macrophages to attack the LDL using free radicals. This causes more oxidized LDL. The macrophages become bloated foam cells and these foam cells attach to the inside of the artery. This can lead to blockage of the coronary arteries and a heart attack. |

Some researchers no longer do, pointing out that half the people who get heart attacks don't have elevated cholesterol levels, and about half the people with elevated cholesterol do not suffer from CHD.) One other little grenade is dropped in the paper's conclusion: Although "a major purported benefit of a low-fat diet is weight loss," a review of the literature failed to turn up any convincing evidence of this proposition. |

Chronically elevated Cortisol in conjunction with adrenaline can also encourage your body to hold on to fat,3 and lead to elevated insulin levels or insulin resistance thereby favoring fat storage, particularly around the abdomen. These complex interactions throw yet other obstacles before you as you try to reduce fat and inches in, on and around your body. High Cortisol levels stimulated by stressful situations can also play a contributing role in bone loss over time.
So how do you deal with stress? You de-stress whenever possible! |

The body produces an elevated white blood cell count in response to the lack of enzymes in cooked food in an attempt to clear the additional toxins from incompletely-digested food. Dr. Howell made this discovery while observing that his leukemia patients all had elevated white blood cell counts. When he fasted his patients so that their bodies would not require enzymes to digest cooked food, the white blood cell counts lowered. |

An intriguing observation that is in accordance with this hypothesis is that plant transcription factors often evolve at elevated rates compared to the structural genes they regulate (Purugganan et al, 1995; Purugganan, 1998; Barrier et al., 2001; Remington and Purugganan, 2002; Dias et al., 2003), a pattern that also appears to hold for anthocyanin gene transcription factors (Purugganan and Wessler, 1994; Rausher et al. 1999). Usually, this elevated rate of nonsynonymous substitutions is concentrated in certain protein domains, while other domains (e.g. |

There is a close association between elevated levels of LDL cholesterol and coronary heart disease, which is a leading cause of death all over the world.
Low density lipoproteins are assembled in the liver. They are not known to contribute to heart disease unless they are oxidized by free radicals. The creation of atherosclerotic plaque and its progression to heart disease is only partially understood. When LDL levels in the blood are elevated, the oxidation of LDL may lead to the accumulation of fatty slabs on the inside of the arterial walls. |

Certainly, the scientific observation has been made that patients with advanced tumors have elevated plasma glutamate levels, including those with gastrointestinal tumors, bronchial carcinomas, lymphomas, breast cancer, and others. The possibility of glutamate damage to the immune system, particularly the lymphocytes, has been investigated and appears to be linked. The elevated plasma glutamate level was correlated with impaired immune responses.

| The underlying metabolic denominator in Syndrome Xis elevated insulin levels. There is little doubt about what contributes to these elevations: an elevated intake of refined carbohydrates. An increased intake of simple sugars leads first to hypoglycemia and later to diabetes. The results from a recent twenty-five-year study add support to the contention that prolonged consumption of refined sugars, and the resulting elevations in insulin, eventually leads to Type II diabetes.... |

Kehoe's dozens of autopsies of dead babies are the work of a very meticulous man, showing precise amounts of lead measured in the brains, livers, hearts and kidneys of poor black and white infants. For toddlers with lead poisoning, it's always been assumed that their exposure comes from the habit of putting things into their mouths. |

| There were no primary-prevention studies that looked only at patients with no risk factors other than elevated cholesterol. As I will demonstrate in this chapter, there are several points that can be taken away from these studies:
Men without a history of heart disease, multiple risk factors, or familial hypercholesterolemia should not take statins.
Men over age seventy without heart disease should not take statins.
Women of any age without heart disease should not take statins. |
| The West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study Group (WOSCOPS) study assessed 6,595 men at high risk of heart attack due to elevated cholesterol levels and risk factors for heart disease. There was a 2.4% reduction in heart attack or cardiac death, although overall mortality was not affected.12 One hundred sixteen in the pravastatin group vs. 106 on placebo developed cancer.
In the Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study (4S)13 4,444 men and postmenopausal women with a history of anginal pain or heart attack were randomized and given either a placebo or simvastatin. |
| Symptoms of elevated blood sugar include lightheadedness, confusion, weakness, and, if untreated, seizures, coma, and death. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that stimulates uptake of glucose or sugar, the body's food, into cells. Unregulated glucose in the blood can lead to a hospital-room emergency.
Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes is a genetic disease that usually occurs in childhood but can also occur in adults, normally those under age forty. |

| Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder defined by the presence of chronically elevated levels of blood glucose. Type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) results from an autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic beta cells with consequent loss of insulin production, resulting in hyperglycemia. Type 1 diabetics require insulin replacement therapy to ensure survival.2
Type 2 diabetics normally produce some basal levels of insulin which is insufficient to cover the surge of blood glucose produced by a high carbohydrate meal. |

Hypertension is dangerous because the damage it does to blood vessel linings can lead to a series of severe pathologies, including atherosclerosis. The elevated arterial pressure also weakens the blood vessel walls, encouraging the development of aneurysms that diminish cardiovascular function and that, when ruptured, can cause stroke, internal bleeding, and a host of other life-threatening conditions. Congestive heart failure and damage to the kidneys are also common in uncontrolled hypertension. |

Ale (or HbAlC) — Over time, elevated blood glucose levels cause an increased glycated hemoglobin level in the blood. A non-diabetic has a normal range of glycated hemoglobin of 4.1-6.2. Most diabetics are advised to maintain their HbAlC in the range of 6.5-7.2 These values are cumulative, and based on bG levels of the past 3 months.
Aplasia —A condition that prevents the body from making red blood cells. In the case of genetically engineered Eprex, 141 patients exhibited immune response aplasia. bG — Blood glucose is the measurement of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. |

If you have elevated blood pressure, it may be because your arteries are constricted, often as a result of cholesterol plaques, and limit the amount of blood and nutrients that reach a particular area. In the case of the brain, not having sufficient blood supplied to that watershed area between the two main arteries is what elevates the risk of stroke. We'll offer tips for reducing blood pressure and cholesterol plaques in the next chapter.

In 2002, Paula failed a stress test. An angiogram revealed that the main artery to her heart was 80 percent blocked. When she sought out a NES practitioner, Debra Carter, in late 2004, she had been on a list for bypass surgery for nearly two years, but her blood platelets had been chronically low, too low for her to be a good candidate for the operation. |

In rats with elevated p53 action, for example, life expectancy is 20 percent shorter, and it also comes with a side order of old-age symptoms like muscle atrophy, thin skin, and hunched backs.
In a perfect world, you'd be able to train the perfect guard dog; kill the cancers and let the progenitor cells through. Chomp on the calves of the cancer cells and nicely sniff the stem cells on their way to their job. But p53 doesn't always follow our ideal model. |

The symptoms of a manic episode often include elevated mood (feeling extremely happy), extreme irritability and anxiety, talking too fast and too much, an unusual increase in energy, and a reduced need for sleep. It's also very common for someone to act impulsively during a manic episode and to engage in behaviors that are risky or that they later regret, like spending sprees. And in more than half of all manic episodes, people are troubled by delusions or hallucinations. |

Acylated flavonoid glycosides are especially labile at elevated temperatures and are frequently thermally degraded during the process of drying plant tissues. This is important during the profiling of this class of natural products in research directed toward the investigation of their physiological and biochemical roles in plants under the influence of environmental factors, or in studies of genetically modified plants for the elucidation of changes in metabolic pathways. |
