We have to explore hydrogen like we have explored electric vehicles, although, ultimately, the EVs [electronic vehicles] did not catch on the way some people thought they might. We found people did not like the inconvenience of finding special limited sites for charging them; again, no infrastructure existed." So was I driving the car of the future? Or was I in an engineering relic, a wrong turn, and evidence of a mutation on the genetic transportation highway?
The plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are superhybrids with larger batteries. "This gives drivers the ability to run entirely on electric power at highway speeds for 20-plus miles. For long trips, the battery never runs down."29 In New York City, the big question, however, is how much legroom commuters expect from their taxis. Environmentalists in New York City were keenly interested in seeing some of the taxi fleet converted to hybrids. The hybrids approved for use, for now, however, had smaller foot and legroom than the other roomier fossil fuel cabs.

The six hour charging time is typical for electric vehicles. The power is supplied through your household current, so the electricity could be generated by coal, solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear sources, depending on what your electric utility company uses. Off-board charging can be accomplished with a special charger in as little as 10 minutes, and a company called GreenIt is planning the construction of rapid-charging stations for electric cars. Phoenix Motors is generating a lot of interest from consumers, and may start selling vehicles to the general public in the next two years.
They hope to eventually produce 20,000 electric vehicles a year, but for now will have to settle with the 500 currently slated for the first production run. The Ontario, California vehicle manufacturer hopes to expand production to more than 6,000 in 2008. According to Byron Bliss, Vice-President of Sales, Phoenix Motorcars plans to sell fleets of vehicles to school districts and businesses, government agencies and companies with large groups of outside representatives.

This seems to be done in order to develop the "performance DNA" from which they can create other electric vehicles in the future. However, the only way the price tag is going down anytime soon is if more people develop an interest in electric cars and are willing to purchase them. This will create an efficient system of supply and demand for electric cars, more e-cars will be manufactured, and competition may arise from other e-car companies that join the movement to switch from gas to electricity.

China is also currently the world's number-one market for electric vehicles. According to Beijing's China Bicycle Association, more than 10 million electric bikes and scooters were sold in China in 2005 alone—that's nearly three times more electric bikes sold than autos. Electric bikes are inexpensive, easy to operate, and well suited to the crowded urban Chinese streets. Most are made by a variety of competitive small manufacturers and are used for intracity transit and deliveries.
