One study compared melatonin levels of elderly subjects who lived independently and were exposed to more bright sunlight to melatonin levels of elderly patients who lived in nursing homes and were less likely to have outdoor activity. The results of this study indicated that a lack of exposure to bright light may lead to reduction of melatonin secretion in old age.23 In another study, researchers concluded that sunlight deprivation is a significant factor in disturbed sleep patterns in institutionalized elderly patients. |
| The melatonin levels in the elderly insomniacs were only half those of either the young men or the elderly people without insomnia. "Melatonin deficiency seems to be a key component in the incidence of sleep disorders in elderly subjects and melatonin replacement therapy may be of benefit," the researchers concluded.31 and noninvasive, and tests can easily be performed at any time or place. Because levels of many hormones, including DHEA, Cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, are highest in the morning, it is far more convenient to be able to test them at home. |

OVERDOSAGE
Overdosages in susceptible patients can lead to liver, cardiac and kidney damage as well as central nervous system disorders such as spasms, more rarely also to psychoses and to permanent injuries such as paralysis and visual disorders, even blindness.
Cases of death, particularly among children, have been observed following administration of Filmaron oil (10% solution of volatile extracts of the rhizomic drag in cooking oil).

Muscle atrophy and weakness are not merely cosmetic problems in elderly people, especially the frail elderly. Researchers have linked muscle weakness with recurrent falls, a major cause of immobility and death in the American elderly population. This is results in millions of dollars yearly in staggering medical costs.
Previous studies have suggested that weight-training can be helpful in reversing age-related muscle weakness. But Fiatarone said physicians have been reluctant to recommend weightlifting for frail elderly with multiple health problems. |

It was assumed that a health benefit would be conferred on this larger proportion of the elderly. Unfortunately, it turns out that this influenza vaccine bestows no particular advantage against dying from the flu or any related cause. Indeed flu season mortality for older people declined from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Since then it has remained constant.21
Thus, what we expected was not what actually happened. Were a standard medical practice such as influenza vaccines to disappear, the effect on mortality among the elderly would be negligible. |

PETER WAS SIPPING COFFEE at a table in the main lecture room, waiting for the start of the first NES conference in Australia, when he noticed an elderly woman headed his way. He wondered, in amazement, how an elderly woman had become so avant-garde as to attend a NES conference. He was about to find out, for the woman came over and introduced herself. Peter cannot now remember her name, but he remembers their conversation.
"She told me she had driven seven hours just to meet me and to thank me," Peter recalled. |

The negative aspect of aging is simply a progressive state of malnourishment and toxicity, both of which can be helped through a series of liver cleanses and adjustments to diet. The elderly respond very well to the liver cleanse and show increased signs of energy, physical mobility, clarity of mind, appetite, sensory enjoyment, and a better sense of self. Apart from improving their physical and mental condition, they often report that they are "coming to life again. " No elderly person should have to die from a debilitating disease. |

B12 deficiency is more likely to be a cause of depression in elderly people who don't absorb the nutrient well. In my own clinical experience, elderly individuals that appeared to have Alzheimer's disease have responded remarkably well to a series of B12 and folic acid injections, showing an increase in memory, thinking ability, and mood.
Dose: 500-1,000 meg daily. Folic Acid/Folate
Folic acid, also known as folate, also helps to prevent depression. |

In the past, healthy adult men were at greater risk than anybody else—children and the elderly tended to be malnourished, with corresponding iron deficiencies, and adult women are regularly iron depleted by menstruation, pregnancy, and breast-feeding. It might be that, as Stephen Ell, a professor at the University of Iowa, wrote, "Iron status mirror[ed] mortality. Adult males were at highest risk on this basis, with women [who lose iron through menstruation], children, and the elderly relatively spared. |

In fact infections (especially of the respiratory tract) are the fourth most common cause of death in the elderly.8
The British Lancet recently reported a study in which elderly patients received either optimal levels of nutritional supplements or a placebo. Those patients who received the nutritional supplements had significant improvements of their overall immune response and enjoyed fewer and less severe infections compared to those who received the placebo. |

And by the way, who actually followed these 29,000 elderly women for 12 years? It sounds like somebody has been handing out the Viagra at the Seniors Center. And by the way, how hard can it actually be to eat five servings of fruits a day anyway? Isn't the serving size for fruit about as big as a couple of blueberries? You ever buy some sort of packaged food product and think, gee, this is about enough for one meal and you look on the package and it says it contains 12 servings! Who's making up these serving sizes anyway? And why does a stick of butter have 47 servings? |

Light, Melatonin, and the Elderly
For reasons still being researched, the elderly produce very low levels of melatonin and suffer a corresponding increase in insomnia, advanced sleep phase syndrome, and other sleep disorders. Some sleep researchers speculate that this is caused by neurochemical alterations of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) that occur during the aging process.22 Other researchers believe calcification of the pineal gland or a more sedentary lifestyle leads to disruptions in sleep-wake patterns. |

Sadly, the sickest people I saw were elderly diabetics—just like my mom. Working with these diabetics made me realize how vulnerable they were and how important it was to maintain proper blood sugar control.
Around this time, I also began reading books by nutritionist Carlton Fredericks such as New Low Blood Sugar and You, and my mind was opened.
Here I was, a relatively new cardiologist treating elderly diabetics' hearts, and my diabetic mother was rapidly getting worse, and it all came together for me: I saw that sugar, not cholesterol, was the real evil. |

That means the RDA recommendations don't apply to women, children, the elderly, small people, or sedentary folks. The USDA doesn't have a clue how much those people need. In fact, if those people followed the USDA recommendations, it wouldn't be possible to eat enough food to get all the vitamins it says are needed without getting fat, unless they exercised quite a bit. |
| And even that estimate is optimistic because a substantial number of the elderly who die from influenza are immunocompromised and won't benefit from a flu vaccine anyway.
Pending legislation in the form of the Flu Protection Act will revamp U.S. flu-vaccine policy by requiring the CDC to pay makers for vaccines unsold "through routine market mechanisms." The bill will also require the CDC to conduct a "public awareness campaign" emphasizing "the safety and benefit of recommended vaccines for the public good."
And let me remind you that flu vaccinations are not innocuous. |
| There are no controlled trials that show that a flu shot prevents deaths in children or the elderly. The only positive studies are of patients with COPD, probably because COPD patients have marginal lung function and preventing any flu infections will have a greater impact.
Dr. Tom Jefferson, an epidemiologist working for the Cochrane Collaboration in Rome, Italy, a nonprofit organization that conducts analyses of published clinical trials, led a group that performed a comprehensive review of the published data on flu vaccines. |
| In the elderly, 25% of hip fractures lead to a permanent loss of independent function. No wonder many seniors, especially frail ones, live in mortal fear of fractures that may send them to oft-dreaded nursing homes for the rest of their few remaining days (although my neighbor lived out her long life at home).
Bone Density
Bone density, that is, the thickness of your bones, is determined by a bone-mineral density (BMD) test. |
| They can also increase accidents, falls, fractures, and mortality, particularly in the elderly, and dependency. Based on this I do not recommend medication for the treatment of insomnia. If you do have to take a pill for sleep, I prefer over-the-counter medications like Benadryl to a prescription pill, and strongly advise you not to take medications for more than a few days. And remember, if you do take a prescription pill, you can drink no alcohol, not even a single glass of wine.
Overall, patients who take sleeping pills have a 25% increase in mortality. |
| Observational studies have found a relationship between BMD and magnesium, which may be low in the diet of some elderly people, but as yet no randomized controlled studies of the effects of magnesium on bone density and fracture have been reported.
CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D
Doctors routinely recommend supplementation with calcium and vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures in postmenopausal women. Taking calcium increases calcium in the blood, making more available for uptake into the bone. With normal aging, there is a decrease in calcium absorption by the stomach. |

The children were gathered together inside a cord held by four elderly men representing the Chacs (rain gods), each standing in a corner of the room. Then the noble who was giving the ceremony took a bone and wet it in a vessel filled with water made of "certain flowers and of cacao pounded and dissolved in virgin water, which they call that brought from the hollows of the trees or of the rocks in the forest"; with this liquid he anointed the children on their foreheads, faces, and in the spaces between the fingers and toes, in complete silence. |
| It was allowed for the elderly, although these are defined differently in various sources: some say that those with licence to imbibe octli were persons with children and grandchildren, but others give even more advanced ages. These old folks were permitted up to four cups every evening. As for the rest, there were certain feasts where everybody could drink octli, including one where even the children could tipple. But on the whole, the prohibitions were grim: the usual penalty for drunkenness was death. |

While body temperature is above ioo°f (37.8°c), no food should be consumed—only pure water or dilute juices. The ill person should stay warm and rest. Temperatures up to io4°f (40°c) should be left alone. If temperature goes beyond this, ice packs and cool water sponges may be used.6

The definitions also ignore other risk factors for fractures in elderly women such as a maternal history of hip fracture, age, and poor balance. For example, most postmenopausal women with fractures do not have a bone density score that meets the WHO osteoporosis criteria.7 The World Health Organization, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and other expert panels are in the process of releasing new guidelines to estimate a woman's risk of an osteoporotic fracture, using a bone density test along with these other risks. |
