Guava leaves are in the Dutch Pharmacopoeia for the treatment of diarrhea, and the leaves are still used for diarrhea in Latin America, Central and West Africa, and Southeast Asia. In Peruvian herbal medicine systems today the plant is employed for diarrhea, gastroenteritis, gastric disorders, and menstrual pain. Indians throughout the Amazon make a leaf decoction —a tea made by boiling the leaves —and use it for mouth sores and bleeding gums. |

Yogurt with live bacterial cultures appears to help alleviate severe diarrhea in children and adults, but is there enough evidence to tell "toast" to move over? According to the AICR, a recent study of adult hospital patients found that live culture yogurt decreased the incidence and duration of diarrhea brought on by antibiotics. At the very least, yogurt adds another meal or snack option for people with intestinal issues. So keep yogurt in your diet as a preventive measure, and should you fall ill with diarrhea, consider incorporating it into your self-treatment. |

Cholera is a waterborne disease that causes severe diarrhea. In serious cases, the persistent diarrhea can cause dehydration and death. But like the itching caused by pinworms and the sneeze caused by the cold, the diarrhea caused by cholera isn't just a symptom—it's a transmission channel. It's how the disease makes it into the water supply and ensures its ability to find new hosts.
Malaria manipulates human hosts too—in its case, by incapacitating us. |

NES Case Overview: Heidi
In 1998, Heidi had been diagnosed with Crohn disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, with the most persistent symptoms being loose stools and chronic diarrhea, with blood occasionally present in her stool. She was treated for years by her primary physician, who prescribed various drugs, most recently Asacol, but by 2006 she was still suffering symptoms, especially diarrhea. Although she continued to see her allopathic physician, she decided to also see a naturopathic physician who also is a NES practitioner. |

Consumption of onions and garlic, therefore, might reduce your risk of suffering from traveler's diarrhea or diarrhea due to oral antibiotic use and may ease the terrible discomfort of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In addition, probiotics can help fend off yeast infections and other bacterial overgrowth.
ENJOY GARLIC AND ONIONS AT THEIR BEST
Some experts say that to get the most health benefits, you need to eat one or two cloves of raw garlic daily. |

Yet within a day of the move to the step-down unit, Josie began vomiting and having bouts of diarrhea. She spiked intermittent fevers, a signal to her doctors that she had a systemic infection. Paidas suspected the source was her central line, a common portal for bacteria unless it is kept scrupulously clean. Tests came back negative, but he decided to remove the central line anyway and treat Josie with oral antibiotics.
As Josie's vomiting and diarrhea tapered off over the next two days, King noticed that her daughter seemed perpetually thirsty. |

The cramps continued to mount over the next few days with both diarrhea and vomiting. When Mark didn't respond to any over-the-counter medications, his parents finally took him to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with appendicitis. After a brief surgery and recovery, Mark was released from the hospital.
He wasn't home for long. He returned to the hospital within twenty-four hours due to increasing abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. Mark was now much sicker than he was before the operation. |

The obligatory ten minutes most physicians spend per patient often became an hour of discussing drug strategies and counseling patients on how to manage life-derailing symptoms, including abdominal pain from severe inflammation of the digestive tract, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. It was nothing for Mullin to call a patient over the weekend to see how he or she might be faring on a new medication. |

Eventually the fever went away, but you're left with pain in your abdomen and diarrhea that continues to come and go. Over-the-counter medicines haven't helped much, and now you've turned to your physician.
Your doctor listens to the story of your illness and does a physical examination. Unfortunately, all the doctor can find is some tenderness in your abdomen and it's not in any specific spot, so it's not helpful in the diagnosis. He or she tests your urine and blood to check for infection, and, finding nothing wrong, orders an X-ray of your abdomen. |
| In its worst form, celiac disease can produce weight loss with resulting malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, and diarrhea. But occasionally none of these symptoms exist, and people may instead have fatigue, achy joints, or symptoms suggestive of IBS. The initial evaluation for this disorder uses a blood test that looks for antibodies against elements within the gut. If these tests are positive, your doctor will send you to a gas-troenterologist who will want to visualize and biopsy your small intestine. |

It is antibiotic resistant and therefore helps to prevent antibiotic-induced diarrhea."13 þ"L. salivarius is classified as a facultative bacterium, which means that it can survive and grow in both anaerobic (without oxygen) and aerobic (with oxygen) environments, although its main effects take place in anaerobic conditions. One unique benefit of L. salivarius is its ability to help break down undigested protein and disengage the toxins produced by protein putrefactions. In one study, L. salivarius was able to produce a high amount of lactic acid and completely inhibit the growth of H. |

Selenium: A trace mineral that is a cofactor for production of active antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductase. Research shows a link between low selenium levels and cancer.
Vitamin B12: Important for metabolism, the formation of the red blood cells, and the maintenance of the central nervous system. A deficiency in vitamin B12 may occur as a result of an inability to absorb the vitamin from food. It can also occur in strict vegetarians who do not consume any animal foods. |

| When these sugars are not properly digested, people often exhibit symptoms of depression, panic attacks, severe mood swings or mania, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and environmental sensitivities. The sugar-digesting carbohydrases from fungal (plant-based) sources are sucrase, lactase, and maltase.
The carbohydrases that digest fiber are called cellulases, and they are the only digestive enzymes our body does not manufacture, although the friendly bacteria in our intestinal tract do produce cellulase for our benefit (see chapter 3).

Bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and small intestine can lead to a host of symptoms, including gas, constipation, diarrhea, and even infections. Overgrowth of bacteria can also interfere with the absorption of vitamin B12 and can interfere with the proper digestion and absorption of fats and sugars. And low acid can contribute to food allergies. Why? Because if we don't have enough acid in our stomachs to digest food, we can't adequately break down foods, and we develop what's called a leaky gut. With a leaky gut, incompletely digested food particles escape back into our system. |

Pets who eat grains contaminated with vomitoxin can have symptoms that include refusal to eat, vomiting, and diarrhea.
In 1995, Nature's Recipe recalled $20 million worth of its dog food because inspectors found vomitoxin in "wheat screenings" used in the pet food. (Wheat screenings, which are not used for human consumption, can include broken grains, crop and weed seeds, hulls, chaff, joints, straw, elevator or mill dust, sand, and dirt.) The FDA did investigate but not out of concern for the more than 250 dogs who became ill after eating Nature's Recipe. |

They developed coughs with nasal discharge, reddish and erosive mouth lesions, bloat, blackish diarrhea and sometimes red-colored urine. Symptoms did not match the usual sheep diseases. Death occurred in five to seven days, primarily among one and a half to two year old adults and three to four month old lambs. One shepherd reported that many of his sheep had died in 2005 after grazing on Bt crops. In 2006, he kept them out of Bt fields and there was no mortality. In a second village, shepherds "described the identical symptoms." Among 29 herds with 2,168 sheep, 549 animals (25%) died. |

To see how this process occurs in real time, Fairweather works in her lab with mice that have been exposed to a common virus such as coxsackievirus B3, known for short as CVB3, which can cause low-grade abdominal distress and diarrhea. When coxsackievirus B3 first enters the immune system, it enters the mast cells, where it gets broken down and chopped up. Toll-like receptors on the surface of the mast cells take a bit of that chopped-up virus and communicate the information they've gathered by presenting a piece of the virus to the T cells as if to say, "Hey, look, we've got a virus here! |
