Corporations are, by their very nature, domineering entities capable of great evil, even when the people who work in those corporations might be honest, hard-working individuals. In our current system of free market economics, only the strong, dominant corporations survive. And that requires maximizing revenues and creating new opportunities to sell more drugs to more people, regardless of the real cost in human suffering or environmental destruction.
Many of the cancer non-profits have become little more than front groups for the corporations that make money off of cancer. |

But today, how will we free ourselves from the tyranny of the corporations?
These corporations have taken over government, regulatory bodies and the media. corporations have become the power monopolists in this nation and now pose a threat of tyranny far more dangerous than any king or dictator. Not only are the people virtually powerless to stand up against the tyranny of corporations, but the very channel through which the people were supposed to be kept informed about such threats -- the mainstream media -- has actually become a supporter of tyranny itself. It is now part of the problem. |

As my CounterThink cartoon depicts below, we are now a nation of the corporations, by the corporations and for the corporations.
The U.S. Senate has now positioned itself as the adversary of the American people when it comes to any decisions involving health or medicine, and most people in this nation have no idea what just happened. Our Prozac-popping populace is too mind-numbed by prescription drugs to save themselves from a medicated future of personal and national bankruptcy. |

It requires that the people, through the governments they elect, have sovereignty over corporations, not equality with them; that they have the authority to decide what corporations can, cannot, and must do. If corporations and governments are indeed partners, we should be worried about the state of our democracy, for it means that government has effectively abdicated its sovereignty over the corporation.29
There may be some comfort to be had from the fact that corporations do try to be good, and to be seen to take their corporate responsibilities seriously. |

By the way, consumers who are waiting around for the giant food corporations to "do the right thing" on their own are going to be sadly disappointed. corporations will only do the right thing after they are sufficiently convinced that doing so will be more profitable than simply ignoring the issue. Ethics has nothing to do with the decision, and people who suffer under the illusion that for-profit corporations take ethics into account in any way whatsoever are living in la-la land. In the real world, like here in the USA, corporations are willing to make money at any cost. |

Would corporations cross these boundaries and use conscious beings as products in order to generate profits? If you know anything about corporations and the way they act today, the answer is undeniably "yes." They are doing so right now, in fact. Approximately forty percent of the U.S. population is now being used for medical experimentation by the prescription drug industry, where dangerous drugs with no long-term safety record are knowingly unleashed on the population in order to generate profits for Big Pharma corporations. |

Today, an astonishing 20 percent of the human genome is now owned by corporations. The simple act of reproducing by having children is now a violation of U.S. patent law. Technically, the corporations that "own" these human genes could sue the parents of all newborns, demanding royalty payments for the use of their intellectual property.

Today's patent laws -- which give ownership over virtually all commonsense ideas to corporations -- will crumble, and governments that colluded with corporations to strip power, health and dollars from the people will pay the price.
Until that day, of course, it's business as usual in the free market: Screw the people, violate the planet, desecrate nature and keep that share price propped up as high as possible. |

Sacrificing the future for today's profit
When the corporations run a nation, that nation has no real future, because corporations only think in terms of the next quarter, not the next generation. |

Drug corporations should be protected because they have the best interests of the general public in mind. The future health of the entire world depends on the research being conducted right now by drug companies.
Americans are lucky to pay the highest prices in the world for medication. Everyone else has to settle for "bargain" pricing, but Americans get the honor of knowing their dollars help fund the shareholder profits of the world's wealthiest corporations, all of which deserve unlimited financial riches because they are saving the world from disease. |

This idea that consumers should not be informed their high-priced bottled water is really just filtered tap water is consistent with the aims of food, drug and beverage corporations, who almost universally agree that consumers should be given less information, not more, about the products they're swallowing. Over the last several decades, corporations have vigorously opposed truth in labeling laws and regulations, including those requiring the labeling of trans fatty acids, sodium content and even ingredients lists! |

Now is a time for action
Personally, I'm tired of waiting around for other corporations to do the right thing. Sometimes, if you want something done right, you've gotta do it yourself. You have to jump in and be willing to do the hard work necessary to demonstrate eco-friendly concepts to the business community. Taking action to make this a reality is a lot more powerful than sitting back and criticizing other corporations for being such lousy stewards of the environment. I believe that right now is a time for action. That's why I've decided to launch these companies now. |

This bottled water issue brings to light the apparent deceptive practices of some of the largest suppliers of bottled water products. |

All that profit goes to the big corporations that monopolize the processing and the retailing of these products, leaving the local mac nut farmer out to dry. That's why we should buy these macadamia nuts directly. Support your local farmer, and keep the big food corporations out of the transaction.
The end of Hawaii's mac nut industry?
If something doesn't change in Hawaii soon, its local farmer mac nut industry could be all but wiped out in a matter of years. |

United States into a Plutocracy -- government by the wealthy elite, where the corporations and the government become one entity that exploits the productivity of the population to enrich the few.
As I pointed out in a previous article about this betrayal by U.S. Senators, many of our lawmakers have become adversaries of the people and are now openly fighting for the expansion of profits and power for mega-corporations while steamrolling the interests and freedoms of the American people. In a very real sense, they have openly betrayed the American people they claim to represent. |

But what if corporations suddenly started acting with greater responsibility towards the environment, the people and our collective future? Imagine the good we could accomplish...
Part of my aim here is to demonstrate how responsible corporations can achieve commercial success while protecting health, consumers and the environment. I believe we CAN do well by doing good, and we CAN create a better future even while creating increased economic abundance for our fellow human beings. We do NOT have to pit the business against the economy. |

Many of the cancer non-profits have become little more than front groups for the corporations that make money off of cancer. They act as commercial cheerleading squads, pumping up the crowd to go get screened and hopefully get diagnosed with cancer so they'll end up buying high-profit chemotherapy drugs. |

Requirements for listing food ingredients were created by a joint effort between the government and private industry (food corporations). In the beginning, food corporations didn't want to be required to list any ingredients at all. They claimed the ingredients were "proprietary knowledge" and that listing them would destroy their business by disclosing their secret manufacturing recipes. It's all nonsense, of course, since food companies primarily want to keep consumers ignorant of what's really in their products. |

Instead, each of these governmental bodies (legislative for the Senate, executive for the other departments) is now operating in the interests of corporations. Campaign finance reform, of course, is impossible under such circumstances, since no corporate-controlled Senate will ever vote to cut itself off from corporate money. Thus, the only outcome of the situation is a further erosion of the integrity of U.S. legislative processes to the point where the public is impoverished, the nation is bankrupt, and the corporations run the government. |

No surprise there -- both these organizations routinely act to protect the interests of powerful corporations, and when it comes to bottled water, the biggest companies are often those sourcing the lowest quality water (such as tap water).

That, of course, requires money, and corporations have lots of that -- especially when they run FDA-enforced monopoly price fixing schemes that clearly qualify as crimes under existing anti-trust legislation.
Democracy is failing
When the government of any nation forgets its people and, instead, focuses on defending and promoting the interests of powerful corporations, you no longer have a Democracy. Instead, you have a Plutocracy (see Wikipedia entry on Plutocracy), where the wealthy elite control the political process and use laws to further enrich themselves at the expense of the public. |

If enough Americans refuse to buy chemically laden products, the message to corporations and industry becomes clear: consumers are increasingly educated about how chemicals can affect their immune systems and corporations will have to do business according to the precautionary principle, marketing products that are proven to be safe and chemical free, in order to increase the bottom line.
