Intubation and oxygen respiration may also be necessary. DOSAGE Storage: It is stored in air-tight, non-synthetic containers, and protected from light. LITERATURE Dhingra VK et al. OVERDOSAGE Overdosage or long-term administration can lead to: thrombosis, damage to the vessels of the retina, combined with optic atrophy, gangrene of the extremities, hemiplagia, and convulsions. Symptoms of acute poisonings include: queasiness, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, skin coolness, itching of the skin, rapid, weak pulse, paresthesia, numbness of the extremities, confusion or also unconsciousness.
Higher dosages cause vomiting, diarrhea, bradycardia and convulsions. Very high dosages bring about death. Following gastric lavage, the treatment for poisonings proceed symptomatically (for further measures, see Digitalis folium). DOSAGE Mode of Administration: Calotropis is used in a ground form, as a powder, as smoke (fume) and also topically. Daily Dosage: As an expectorant and diaphoretic 200 mg to 600 mg; as an emetic 2 g to 4 g. LITERATURE Seiber JN et al., (1982) Phytochemistry 21(9):2343. Willaman JJ, Hui-Li L, (1970) Lloydia 33(3A):1.
INDICATIONS AND USAGE Fool's-parsley has been used for gastroenteric, complaints in children, infantile cholera, summer diarrhea, and convulsions. PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE EFFECTS Fool's parsley is considered a toxic plant. The older literature contains descriptions of poisonings, sometimes fatal ones, occurring as a result of confusing garden parsley with the freshly-harvested drug. Probably, however, these had to do with poisonings by spotted hemlock. Caution should nevertheless be exercised.

In 1992 the Australian authorities reported 164 cases of this potentially life-threatening condition, which is associated with confusion, lethargy, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, fatigue, fainting, sleepiness, and possible convulsions. Since it doesn't work better than hydrochlorothiazide and is potentially dangerous, I don't recommend that you use it. Loop diuretics are more powerful medications. Brand names include furosemide (Lasix) and bumetidine (Bumex).

Doses of more than 2 grams could cause delirium, hallucinations, and convulsions. Range and Appearance Cinnamomum aromaticum is native to southern China, while C. verum is native to Sri Lanka, but both species are naturalized and cultivated in the tropics. Both are small evergreen trees with oval oblong leaves 5 to 9 inches in length. The yellow-white flowers are borne in panicles. The flowers are followed by small purple berries that each bear a single seed. To make cinnamon spice, the thick bark of the tree is peeled away and layers are left to dry, during which time it curls up.

Yes, you read that correctly, horny goat weed. The story goes that a Chinese goat herder noticed extreme sexual activity amongst his goats after grazing on the herb, thus the name.

The Cure Within: A History of Mind-Body Medicine

Anne Harrington

Once, when people fell into strange states of consciousness, collapsed into convulsions, and then submitted unwillingly but inexorably to the commands of a superior authority, they had been caught up in a struggle between evil and good, between a demon and one of God's official representatives on earth. Now such people were in the thrall of powerful physical forces that were just beginning to be discovered in the new Newtonian universe.
In 1775, Mesmer gave several demonstrations in which he showed that he could first evoke convulsions in people and then dispel them with a peremptory gesture, just like Gassner. Such things, he said, were not what they seemed—they had nothing to do with the devil or the supernatural. They were, he said, simply the consequence of his manipulation of the wholly natural force of animal magnetism.17 Not spirits but an invisible magnetic force! It was a conclusion that helped give the authorities the rationale they needed to put a stop to Gassner's public career.
These convulsions left many patients feeling much improved, or even cured of their ailments. Apparently, mineral magnets could have great therapeutic value through their ability to influence human magnetic fluids in this fashion. But then Mesmer made a further discovery: the mineral magnets were not actually necessary to the effects he could produce! By simply waving his hands over a patient's body, Mesmer was able to produce precisely the same results as he had before using mineral magnets.
The patient would then typically collapse into convulsions, and Gassner would proceed to exorcise the offending spirit. Sometimes he added flourishes to this basic routine: in one dramatic instance, for example, he ordered the demon inside a woman to increase the poor victim's heartbeat and then to slow it down. Following the sec- Father Johann Joseph Gassner (1727-1779) performing an exorcism on a young woman before a crowd of witnesses. Castelli, in Louis Figuier, Les Mysteres de la Science, ca. 1770.
This time, Marthe responded with convulsions and every sign of distress. The conclusion from these and similar tests seemed clear, and Marescot summed it up with the memorable line "Nothing from the devil, much counterfeit, a little from disease."11 This is a striking moment in the history of exorcism's encounter with medicine. From now on, it would no longer be enough (if indeed it ever really had been) for a person simply to act in odd ways or to report powerful and disturbing experiences.

Public Health Laboratory Service and published in the Lancet showed that children given the measles/mumps/rubella shot were three times more likely to suffer from convulsions than those children who didn't receive it. The study also found that the MMR vaccine increased by five times the number of children suffering a rare blood disorder. It is interesting to note that the mortality rate from measles declined by 95 percent before the measles vaccine was introduced. In the United Kingdom, despite widespread vaccination among toddlers, cases of measles recently increased by nearly 25 percent.

In a report issued by German health authorities and published in a 1989 issue of the Lancet, the mumps vaccine was revealed to have caused 27 specific neurological reactions, including meningitis, febrile convulsions, encephalitis, and epilepsy. A Yugoslavian study linked 1 per 1,000 cases of mumps encephalitis directly to the vaccine. The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal in the U.S. reported in 1989 that the rate varies from 1 in 405 to 1 in 7,000 shots for mumps. Although mumps is generally a mild illness and the vaccine's side effects are severe, it is still included in the MMR vaccine.
