Greenwashing is big business, and so is pushing more toxic products to consumers that they will spray on their lawns, shove down their throats, put in their cars or pee away into the sewer system. Most consumer products are highly toxic for people, animals and nature, and before long, nearly all of them will likely carry some kind of greenwashing claim that declares how good they are for the environment. |

Those nations that reject western foods and pass laws to protect their populations from dangerous chemicals in foods, beverages and consumer products.
Those nations that reject American intellectual property guidelines and ban corporations or private individuals from "owning" patents on medicines, seeds and genes.
Those nations that invest in education, energy efficiency and environmental cleanup in order to create a better future for their children. |
| Consequences of the great American invasion
All around the world, America is invading nations through its foods, medicines, consumer products, dangerous economic practices, synthetic chemicals and intellectual property. And everywhere that American products are adopted, widespread disease and death soon follows.
Small island nations in the South Pacific, for example, had never heard of diabetes, heart disease or depression just two generations ago. |
| The future belongs to smart nations
Any nation that wishes to protect itself from the same fate America is headed towards would be wise to reject American foods, medicines, beverages, consumer products, intellectual property laws and financial practices.
The nations that survive and prosper over the next hundred years will be:
Those nations that save money and invest in their future (rather then spending it on war or underfunded entitlement program). |
| Through the proliferation of fast food restaurants, pharmaceutical companies, chemically-contaminated consumer products and similar items invented in America, the world is being bombarded by systems of food, medicine and distorted intellectual property claims that are producing far more casualties than any bombs-and-bullets war.
How to control a nation
In World War II, the Germans attempted to steal natural resources from neighboring nations by forcefully occupying and controlling the targeted territories. |

Because the fastest growing source of harzardous consumer products are, in fact, pharmaceuticals, and if the FDA admits it needs to start enforcing environmental safety in food and drug products, it would have to face up to the fact that medications are now a primary source of global pollution of rivers and oceans. (Take a guess what all those HRT drugs are causing down stream...)
So what about the EPA? Why doesn't the EPA regulate pharmaceuticals as environmental pollutants? |

No good science supporting safety of triclosan
According to the American Medical Association: "Despite their recent proliferation in consumer products, the use of antimicrobial agents such as triclosan in consumer products has not been studied extensively. No data exist to support their efficacy when used in such products or any need for them
it may be prudent to avoid the use of antimicrobial agents in consumer products."
The chemical company states: "Ciba supports the use of triclosan only if there is a benefit to human beings."
So, what if it is shown to offer no benefit to humans? |

Rosalinde van der Vlies, an administrator in the EU's Environment Directorate, explained to me that at the core of the EU's policy is a "life-cycle analysis" applied to all consumer products: an assessment of the actual costs over the lifetime of consumer products, from their creation to their demise.9
Traditionally, production "costs" center on a narrow set of fixed factors: labor, facilities maintenance, natural resources, and energy use, the literal costs of production. |

It is infused into or used as an additive in a number of consumer products like toys, bedding, trash bags, socks, kitchen utensils, textiles and plastics.
"Over 95% of the uses of triclosan are in consumer products that are disposed of in residential drains. In a U.S. Geological Survey study of 95 different organic wastewater contaminants in U.S. streams, triclosan was one of the most frequently detected compounds, and in some of the highest concentrations," according to the NCAMP. |

Aren't they also aware that many of their consumer products contain cancer-causing chemicals?
The sad truth is that most brand-name consumer products contain at least one toxic chemical, and that's true for food as much as it is for home care products. Unless you're shopping at a health food store and buying truly natural, organic, unscented and environmentally responsible products, you can bet there are toxic chemicals all over your home (and in your body) right now.
The average American consumer uses close to 100 toxic chemicals before she even leaves the house in the morning. |

It is published under the protection of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and it is offered as entertaining public commentary for the purpose of stirring thoughtful debate over the current use of pink ribbons to market consumer products containing (or producing) cancer-causing substances. As far as I know, we are currently the only consumer products company in the United States that has gone to the trouble (and expense) of manufacturing and selling RoHS-certified products.
Since these rules are not required in the United States, most retailers pay no attention to them and keep selling products made with mercury and other toxic substances. But because I'm such a proponent of protecting both nature and human health, I insist on sourcing RoHS-certified products wherever possible. |

The FDA makes virtually no effort to protect American consumers from cancer-causing or hormone-disrupting chemicals in tens of thousands of consumer products, and were it not for the efforts of consumer advocacy groups and environmental protection groups like the NRDC, no one would be protecting consumers at all. (U.S. government agencies usually have to be sued by groups like the CSPI or Public Citizen before they will take any pro-consumer action... |

P&G temporarily suspended sales of the SK-II line and closed sales counters across China after "security incidents" broke out between employees and customers and a furious mob smashed a glass door at the company's Shanghai branch.3 Thousands of consumers demanded refunds of the elite brand that sells for more than $100 a bottle. |
| A diabolically opposite example is vinyl plastic: the material is produced with hazardous materials, contributes cancer-causing dioxin to the air during the manufacturing process, and requires the addition of toxic stabilizers (lead) and plasticizers (phthalates) to make it soft and flexible for consumer products like lunchboxes and yellow rubber duckies.
Looking around the living room the office, kitchen or kids' playroom one can see no shortage of toxic products that could be redesigned or replaced with safer green chemistry alternatives. |
| Contrary to popular belief, industrial chemicals in consumer products are essentially unregulated in the United States," Jane reported. "Except for chemicals added directly to food, there is no legal requirement for health and safety testing or human exposure monitoring for any chemical in commerce."6 Beauty Secrets was released at the National Press Club in Washington DC on November 28, 2000. With the nation focused on a still-undecided election, it was a quiet day for news at the Press Club, though some reporters mostly female showed up for the event. |
| In her mid 30s, Jane merged her interests into a new career as vice president of research at the Environmental Working Group, specializing in exposing the health risks from toxins in food, air, water and consumer products. But she never wove together the threads of cosmetics, chemicals and children's health until a warm day in October 2000.
The US Centers for Disease Control had just released new research from their study of the levels of toxic chemicals in the bodies of average

| So many products contain PBDEs, unlabeled and in unknown amounts foam furniture, electronics, rugs, even clothing. Most consumer products are unregulated in the US, so manufacturers are allowed to use hazardous chemicals without demonstrating the safety of the products and without labeling them as toxic.
Now Michelle was starting to feel angrier. "Why do I have to worry about this? It just seems crazy that the government isn't more involved

| But in the US, consumer products can contain unlimited amounts of phthalates and most other hazardous chemicals. And even though toy manufacturers are already making phthalate-free toys for Europe, toys sold in the US still contain the chemicals, according to product tests conducted by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2006. The tests found phthalates in a baby's teething ring made by Prestige Brands, a Goldberger's Fuzzy Fleece Baby doll and a yellow rubber ducky sold at Walgreens.19 In the absence of federal leadership, some US states are acting on their own. |

VOCs are released into the air from automobile exhaust and consumer products. While automobiles may seem to be a far greater source than a little can of hairspray, in California alone, the annual emissions of 176 million pounds of VOCs from 30 million Californians using consumer products are the same as if 20 million cars were added, each driving an additional 10,000 miles that year" (Source: Air Quality Resources, www.aqs.com/iaq/vol_org_compounds.asp). |

That's why I think it is so important that our most successful retailers and manufacturers of consumer products operate with a strong passion for protecting both consumers and the environment. Merely talking green isn't enough. Companies need to actually deliver green products that make a significant difference right now.
Our EcoLEDs lights do exactly that. Change one 100-watt light bulb into a 10-watt EcoLEDs light, and you'll save $450 in electricity and reduce CO2 emissions by an astonishing 9,000 pounds over the life of the bulb. |

Some researchers believe that such contamination of our food supply, or other consumer products, happens when large commercial networks operate without sufficiently tight oversight or when businesses are not knowledgeable about the consequences of making even minor alterations in manufacturing processes. One high-level researcher, who prefers to talk off the record, cautions that, without proper oversight and improved regulation, we may well see more such food- and additive-related clusters in the future, both in epidemic and sporadic form. |
