Sinus congestion leads to impaired flow of fluids in the sinuses, which predisposes people to bacterial infections (page 265) that can cause sinusitis (page 407). What are the symptoms of sinus congestion? |
| SINUS CONGESTION
Sinus congestion (also called nasal congestion or rhinitis) involves blockage of one or more of the four pairs of sinus passageways in the skull.
The blockage may result from inflammation and swelling of the nasal tissues, obstruction by one of the small bones of the nose (deviated septum), or from secretion of mucus. It may be acute or chronic. Acute sinus congestion is most often caused by the common cold (page 129). Sinus congestion caused by the common cold is not discussed here. |

Improvements in at least three symptoms were noted for 54 percent of patients. This large study is also reflective of what I have observed in my clinical practice of cardiology. There is no doubt about it: coenzyme Q10 supplementation in patients with CHF does alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. |

Dust, mold, or other allergens may cause nasal congestion.
Raise the head of the bed or add pillows. Sleeping with your head raised helps drain congestion and open your airways.
Develop a consistent sleep schedule. Regular sleeping may help keep breathing stable and decrease snoring.
Wash out your sinuses. A process called pulsatile nasal irrigation uses a WaterPik or similar device with a special attachment to clear out thick secretions. Ask your health-care practitioner for more information about this.

It is effective in stimulating and supporting the immune system while relieving swollen glands by reducing lymphatic congestion. It is also known to improve circulation, aiding varicose veins, and is useful in any number of infections whether they be bacterial, viral, or fungal.
Calendula has a particular attraction to the female reproductive system and can regulate menstruation, relieve menopausal symptoms, relieve uterine congestion, and reduce cysts and fibroid tumors as well as relieve menstrual cramps.
In this way, the heart and spirit of Calendula complement each other. |
| I work with the spirit of Calendula to clear any blockage or congestion in the second chakra, which is where sexual issues present themselves. Oftentimes, there is a direct connection between sexual issues and reproductive challenges. In a case where the second chakra is compromised I will ask Calendula to come and help clear the chakra. She comes in with her orange skirt and spins in circles so that her skirt stands out. This rapid movement clears the congestion from the chakra and then she can heal any wounding that has occurred in the energy field of this chakra. |

In Northern Territory and Queensland, the leaves of Melaleuca leucadendron are inhaled to relieve nasal congestion and reduce cough.29 The Aborigines of Arnhem Land, too, use Melaleuca (at least four species: M. acacioides, M. cajuputi, M. dealbata, and M. viridiflora) to treat chest congestion and general respiratory ailments.30
Finally, Cymbopogon ambiguus is an important medicinal plant whose distribution is always well known by local people. The scent from the torn leaves is inhaled to ease chest congestion. Central Desert Aborigines soak the crushed leaves in water and drink the juice. |

| Intermenstrual bleeding (metrorrhagia) results when submucous fibroids ulcerate through the endometrial lining or cause congestion of the surrounding blood vessels.
Fibroids can undergo degenerative changes. One type of degenerative change is when the continued growth of the fibroid outgrows the blood supply. A more common type of degenerative change is when there is a loss of cellular detail (hyaline degeneration) as a result of a decrease in the vascularity of the tumor. |
| The majority of fibroids (an estimated 50 to 80 percent)9 don't cause any symptoms, but when symptoms do occur they often begin as a vague feeling of discomfort and may include a feeling of pressure, congestion, bloating, heaviness, pain with vaginal sex, urinary frequency, backache, abdominal enlargement, and abnormal bleeding. Abnormal bleeding occurs in only 30 percent of women with fibroids. Heavy bleeding (menor-rhagia) results when intramural tumors enlarge the endometrial cavity and increase the surface area of endometrium and blood supply to the uterus. |
| Cold or ice packs placed over the region of the uterus while putting the feet in a tub of hot water can further assist in reducing the inflammation, congestion, and pain in the pelvic area. Alternating hot and cold sitz baths can also be used to improve circulation in the pelvic area and improve the healing time from the infection. This is done by sitting in a bath of hot water, with the water level just above the waist, for three minutes, followed by sitting in a small second portable metal or plastic tub of ice cold water for one minute. |

The physician uses a short length of blood vessel from another part of the body to provide a way for blood to go around blockages in coronary arteries, much as a detour functions to route traffic around the congestion caused by an accident or by highway construction.
But as I have already argued, these interventions are aimed at alleviating the symptoms of coronary artery disease, not at curing the disease itself. And their results erode with the passage of time. Patients have second and third bypasses. Arteries widened with angioplasty tend to clog once again. |

A few drops of oil in a bowl of steaming water will create healing aromatic vapours to clear away congestion and restore comfort to your body. A drop of chamomile, marjoram or lavender oil on your pillowcase will lull you off to sleep. There is nothing new about perfumed bed linen for in the Middle Ages laundresses would drape the household sheets over lavender bushes to dry and impart the plant's fresh, clean scent.
Although strong-smelling substances, fragrances and perfumes can actually provoke asthma attacks in some people, pure essential oils contain no irritating additives to aggravate. |

Primary dysmenorrhea is diagnosed when other causes of pelvic pain have been excluded. Certain characteristic clinical features distinguish the diagnosis.
The cause of primary dysmenorrhea may be one of several factors, including behavioral and psychological factors; lack of blood flow, and therefore oxygen, to the uterus (ischemia); and increased production and release of uterine prostaglandins. |

The resistance can occur either as a result of some physical obstruction, such as constipation or lymph congestion, or from an emotional resistance to a particular person or situation. Once recognized, the causes of resistance can usually be resolved. Fighting pain tends to lead to more pain, whereas releasing the resistance lessens the pain. Even if you experience some pain while supporting the body through cleansing, rest and good nutrition, the pain actually helps to accelerate the healing. |

Steam inhalations with refreshing oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, wintergreen or thyme effectively clear nasal passages and relieve congestion, catarrh, asthma, croup and whooping cough and improve skin conditions such as acne by opening facial pores and sweating out impurities.
Saunas or sweat baths using eucalyptus or other essential oils relieve colds, flu, catarrh or bronchial conditions and may even alleviate an asthma attack. Of course, a sauna or sweat bath should be followed by a tepid bath or shower to lower the body temperature gradually and avoid catching a chill. |

The severe congestion of her liver and intestinal tract and the general dehydration of Jenny's body caused most of her chronic complaints, including the pain in her head, back and lower abdomen. Sinus congestion typically causes symptoms of pressure, tenderness, or pain in the area above the eyebrows (frontal sinus) and above the upper, side teeth (maxillary sinus). Other symptoms include nasal stuffiness sometimes accompanied by a thick yellow or green discharge, postnasal drip, bad breath, and an irritating dry cough.
Medical treatments
Over the counter products may help to reduce the symptoms associated with sinus congestion. Analgesics, such as aspirin (Bayer, Ecotrin, Bufferin), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and acetaminophen (Tylenol), reduce pain due to sinus pressure. |

The following are a few examples indicating the extreme importance of a healthy, clean liver:
• Almost every illness is either directly or indirectly caused by congestion of the liver bile ducts and gallbladder.
• Trapped, toxic bile is the source of most digestive problems.
• Congested bile ducts in the liver can turn harmless chemicals into cancer-causing substances—and then scatter them throughout the body.
• A poorly functioning liver can block 70 percent of the blood flow to the heart.
• The liver is responsible for mental clarity and emotional stability. |
