Most people report positive results in 3 - 30 days, depending on the condition. Aloe vera contains acemannan, a natural immune booster There's research being done now on the anti-cancer effects of acemannan, a phytonutrient found in aloe vera. In one study, dogs and cats undergoing radiation for cancer were given acemannan as an adjunctive therapy. Not only did the tumors shrink more in the acemannan-treated group, but post-treatment survival was significantly extended. Click here for an abstact on the study.

And then there's the fraudulent practice of off-label prescribing, too, which means that a drug approved for ANY condition can be legally prescribed for ALL conditions, regardless of whether it has undergone a single test for those conditions. Example: A drug approved for migraine headaches can be legally prescribed for heart disease, even if it hasn't undergone a single clinical trial for heart disease. So much for the grand claims of "evidence-based medicine.

Melatonin (page 555) Years ago, a preliminary study suggested that melatonin may help stabilize the condition of some people with advanced cancers.67 Since then, Italian researchers have been investigating the effects of melatonin in cancer patients, often with partial success 68,69'70'71,72'73'74,75'76'77'78'79 Patients with advanced prostate cancer who had previously not responded to drug therapy (ttiptorelin) were given melatonin plus triptorelin in a preliminary trial.80 PSA scores, a marker of disease progression, fell (i.e., improved) more than 50% in 8 of 14 patients.
Nonetheless, many doctors of natural medicine recommend zinc for this condition. Test tube studies have shown that vitamin C (page 604) inhibits the growth of E.coli,27 the most common cause of ABP and CBP. Results from preliminary human studies indicate vitamin C supplementation can cause changes in urine composition that may inhibit the growth of urinary E. coli.
Folic acid (page 520), vitamin B6 (page 600), and vitamin B12 (page 601) are known to reduce blood levels of the amino acid (page 465) homocysteine, and homocystinuria, a condition associated with high homocysteine (page 234) levels, frequently causes osteoporosis. Therefore, some researchers have suggested that these vitamins might help prevent osteoporosis by lowering homocysteine levels.
If prostate cancer spreads to a distant part of the body, it most often is found in bone, a condition that may cause bone pain. Late stages of the disease are associated with severe weight loss, untreatable fatigue-inducing anemia, and finally death. Medical treatments Prescription drug treatment for prostate cancer focuses on anti-hormone therapy, which interferes with the body's ability to make testosterone. Medications used include diethylstilbestrol (Stilphostrol), goserelin (Zo-ladex), leuprolide (Lupron), flutamide (Eulexin), bica-lutamide (Casodex), and ketoconazole (Nizoral).

And beyond them are tens of millions more who have what they believe is high-quality health insurance, but who in fact would lose their life savings and be forced into bankruptcy if they or a family member came down with a debilitating disease or chronic condition. American health care has become a lottery. If you work for a large company that provides generous benefits, you win; if you work for a small company or as an independent contractor, you lose.

Hale also notes that this is not only a painful condition but it also constitutes an open pathway for infection to enter the body. Only dental X-rays can detect this condition since there is usually no bleeding gum tissue or foul odor that would alert the owner. Brushing your dog or cat's teeth is the only safe way to prevent plaque build up and dental disease. If brushing becomes routine when they are puppies or kittens, they soon learn that this task can be enjoyable. One product that has been around for many years, "Nylabone Plaque Attacker," claims to remove plaque from teeth.

The results of several clinical trials suggest that gamma oryzanol (page 525) supplementation can help people with gastritis and other gastrointestinal complaints. In one study, people with chronic gastritis were given 300 mg of gamma oryzanol per day.19 After two weeks, 23% of people taking gamma oryzanol reported that it was "extremely effective" and 55% rated it as "moderately effective." Another study produced similar results: People with various types of gastritis received 300 mg of gamma oryzanol per day.
Are there any side effects or interactions? Borage seeds contain small amounts of liver toxins called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). However, testing has not demonstrated the presence of the alkaloid in the seed oil.20 Most commercially available borage seed oil is, therefore, likely to be PA-free and presents no risk of PA toxicity. Minor side effects from borage oil use can include bloating, nausea, indigestion (page 260), and headache.21 What is it? Boric acid is a chemical substance with mild antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral properties.

He or she is either suffering from a condition that did not exist before they came in contact with the health care industry, or they're dead. We will use "mistake" and "error" as broad, inclusive terms to mean that someone did something they were not supposed to do. It's not a matter of casting blame. Many more mistakes can be attributed to systems errors than to human frailties. Fix the system, and those mistakes and deaths that follow are prevented. Health care has become impossibly fragmented.

Coverage decisions should be weighed against the prospect of having claims lowballed or arbitrarily rejected when the insurance company's financial condition worsens. Regardless, taking photos of insured property; maintaining comprehensive inventory lists; and keeping policies, receipts, valuations, and other documentation in a safe place may address those concerns. Terrorist activities will go hand in hand with border disputes, political uprisings, unholy alliances, nationalization and confiscation, and other international threats as economic conditions worsen and the social mood sours.

These are the people who don't seek help unless they are critically ill, who postpone a test or a surgical procedure until their condition is acute, or who, because they are embarrassed by their inability to pay, put off treatment until it's too late. Of these, 18,000 die every year. Beyond the forty-four million are tens of millions more who are underinsured. They have marginal coverage. Faced with serious illness or injury, they would be wiped out.
She was in a coma for a month after the surgery, fed through a feeding tube, and even after she regained consciousness her condition remained grave for two months. She stayed in the hospital for rehabilitative therapy, the feeding tube still in place, for three more months. During the six months she was in the hospital, Oldham focused her energy on getting better. In those days, she didn't think much about what her medical bills would be. Besides, she had health insurance.
Meanwhile, Hudson's condition deteriorated. His appendix ruptured, and peritonitis set in. The infection spread through his body. Two days after Hudson arrived at the hospital, an Inland Global surgeon performed "emergency" surgery. Eleven days later, Hudson died. Amid the turmoil that characterized the KPC health care system, even tests to detect—or rule out—the existence of life-threatening diseases often went awry, delaying diagnoses and creating anxiety. Such was the case on September 13, 2000, at the Artesia Clinic on South Pioneer Boulevard in Los Angeles County. Dr.

Type-2 diabetes is a reversible health condition. Since the condition is defined by measurable symptoms, once a person restores normal sugar metabolism and the symptoms disappear, that person is by definition no longer diabetic. Diabetes is not genetic in origin, nor is it an inevitable condition for individuals whose parents expressed symptoms of diabetes. It can be reversed by eliminating the causes of poor blood sugar metabolism and insulin insensitivity – namely, poor nutritional choices and a lack of regular physical exercise.

The highest number of species (39, 18.1%) was used for the treatment of "magical" (psychosomatic) ailments, with 59 applications (12.4% of all plant uses).

You Don't Have to be Afraid of Cancer Anymore

If cancer has moved from its point of origin, and is spreading to other tissues and organs (metastasis), this is an ominous condition that requires strong and immediate attention. Regardless of the stage of the tumor, the first thing to do when the diagnosis of cancer is made is to implement any measures that stop metastasis. Modern medicine has no therapies that address metastasis.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR Getting the answers to the questions below will help clarify which path to take regarding treatment for your prostate condition. 1. Do I have an aggressive (spreading) or localized form of prostate cancer? 2. What is the overall (not disease-specific) survival rate for the type of treatment being considered? (What percentage of men survive 5, 10, 15 years? Survival should mean actual years, not a "biochemical cure" by arbitrary evaluation of PSA count) 3. How does the treatment I am considering compare to watchful waiting in terms of overall survival? 4.

This potent antioxidant may be of particular benefit in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that involves insulin resistance, elevated testosterone levels, and infertility. In one study, researchers asked twenty women with PCOS to take 600 mg of NAC three times daily for four weeks. By the end of the study, the women's insulin levels had decreased by one-third, and their testosterone levels dropped by more than half. NAC may have more general benefits in preventing insulin resistance, especially for people who eat a high-fructose diet. Take 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily.

Next we consider the problem of gallstones, a sometimes painful condition, but one that is not often associated with serious morbidity or mortality. To justify preventive surgery, the benefit must outweigh the risk. Traditional surgery was invasive and associated with hospital stays and long recoveries. In 1989, a far less invasive procedure, called laparoscopic cholecystectomy, was developed. Five years later, it accounted for 90% of all gallstone operations. Case fatality rates declined. There were risks, particularly bile duct injuries, malpractice claims for which increased fivefold.
In a culture such as ours, one that medicalizes the human condition, it will always be difficult to think about, let alone evaluate, the necessity or appropriateness of surgery. Indeed two common surgeries—also cited as the two most "unnecessary" surgeries—are gynecological, no accident given what we know about the medicalization of women's sexuality, particularly related to childbirth. In chapter 6 we will consider a related example, the confusing and unfortunate history of routine postmenopausal hormone replacement.
Patients in this group knew that they were receiving the real SSRI, as did their physicians, a condition which surely created expectations of maximum benefit—and made comparison with the other groups less meaningful. "The data do not support the TADS authors' optimistic conclusion. The balance between benefit and harm of SSRI for depression in childhood has yet to be shown to be favorable."41 We would rephrase: In the treatment of childhood depression, SSRIs do more harm than good. Harm, of course, includes many outcomes— one of which may be the worst of all.
It follows that for most people, this perfectly normal (or at least expected) suffering of the human condition should not be treated with powerful and even dangerous drugs. For all the time and money and effort put into the treatment of mental illness, little has been accomplished. Few lives are saved. Not many are improved. An entire culture has come to rely on drugs to keep them happy. Thus, our conclusion: were psychiatry and its related disciplines and professions to disappear, not much would change, at least in terms of mortality and morbidity.

It can also lead to a condition in the newborn called macrosomia—which is a fancy term for "really chubby baby" as all the extra sugar in the mother's bloodstream makes its way across the placenta and feeds the fetus. Some researchers think this type of diabetes may be "intentionally" triggered by a hungry fetus looking for Mommy to stock the buffet table with sugary glucose. So what causes diabetes? The truth is, we don't fully understand. It's a complex combination that can involve inheritance, infections, diet, and environmental factors.

There are, it seems to us, two implications for our book: (1) in an unknown proportion of cases, screening for prostate cancer leads, in and of itself, to drastic and debilitating treatment of a condition that may never become life threatening; and (2) there is no evidence that screening for prostate cancer results in any public health advantage. Breast Cancer. In the city of Shanghai, China, one-quarter million women were divided into two groups. In the first, women were given intensive training on how to conduct breast self-exams, the skill being reinforced one and three years later.
