If you're at the computer frequently you might find that it works for you to keep your records there. The potential challenge with this method, however, is that you have to feel 100 percent confident that you'll be able to record every day. Some clients have told me that they began their food diary on their computer but then went on vacation or simply didn't have access to their computer for a day or two and this stopped them in their tracks.
Find a time to record. The ideal pattern is to make your food notes soon after you eat each meal or snack. For some people, this simply isn't realistic. |

In 1986, when I could not resist it any more, I developed a computer simulation of the eternally inflating universe, together with a graduate student, Mukunda Aryal.
I am technologically challenged and have never written a single line of computer code. But I have a pretty good understanding of how computers think, and over the years I have supervised several major computational projects by graduate students. Since I cannot check the code (and I suspect that I would not enjoy that even if I could), I am wary of hidden dangers and always view the results with great suspicion. |

The sensing catheter contains a miniaturized electronic device that measures blood sugar and then sends this information every few seconds to a pager-sized computer module worn on the patient's belt for up to one week. The portable computer module translates and records blood sugar data, which can then be downloaded to the doctor's computer. A graph showing the average blood sugar reading every five minutes (288 blood sugar readings per day) can then be generated and studied in relationship to food intake, appetite, food cravings, hypoglycemic symptoms, medication, and exercise. |

They are big brother intellectual property policies, where these companies would even install secret spyware on your computer, which is what Sony BMG did to millions of users without their knowledge, to prevent you from copying their music, meanwhile exposing your computer to hacker attacks. That's history, that's already been done. That's the way Sony BMG treats customers, and if we leave intellectual property laws up to the media giants like Sony, we'll all be branded criminals sooner or later.
So bottom line: Rip all the movies you want. |

But in the last decade, as work has increasingly centered on the personal computer, CTS has reached near-epidemic proportions. At least 10 percent of people who work at computers have CTS, and that number is projected to rise.
The best way to treat CTS is to prevent it from happening. If you work at a computer, use a wrist rest to relieve pressure on the carpal tunnel, and take a break every hour to rotate your hands. If you think you may already have CTS, see your doctor for a test called an electromyograph. |

The convenience and savings of Internet pharmacies have led many patients to abandon brick-and-mortar stores—but you must make sure the pharmacy is reputable and shop wisely to get the best deals. Here's bow...

At the first stop, three student helpers are administering computerized health diagnostics to a group of sophomores with a computer system called TriFit. Giving the kids targets for heart rate, blood pressure, body fat, and the rest, he announces, is a proven method of motivating people to stay fit. Indeed, studies suggest that simply getting on the scale every morning improves the likelihood that someone who's overweight will shed pounds. But Lawler and Zientarski's ambitions extend far beyond concerns about their students' body mass index. |

Some folks find that it's bedtime before they get to their diary and the obvious problem here is that you often forget what you've eaten. |

In a newspaper story, a twenty-two-year-old man described why he kept his e-mail and instant-messaging connection active twenty-four hours a day: "I may not use it, but it could ring anytime.... If I don't have it, I feel cut off."

Americans spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software, or new cars. They spend more on fast food than on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos, and recorded music—combined," Eric Schlosser reveals in Fast Food Nation.
What's more, in almost all cases, as noted earlier, all this dining out means people also are unknowingly putting into their bodies processed foods often pumped with hidden sugars. "People are consuming products that they wouldn't even dream have sugar in them," says food scientist Russ Bianchi. |

When her body began to convulse, Karen appeared to have fallen from her chair, pulling the computer and fan from her desk. She struck her head on the desk and the frame of her bed. When she landed unconscious on the floor, the coroner said, her neck was at such an awkward angle that she could not breathe. |

People compare our brain to a computer," Toth says. "It really ought to be the other way around because even the computers they're developing now can't compare. Lower forms of life, like a reptile, just have a brain stem. But as the brain developed a mid brain and then the fore brain—that's where the cerebral reasoning function is—a very important center was developed deep inside the brain called the limbic system. If you were to take the brain out and spread it out, it would cover about three square feet. |

The quantum Bush computer?
Scientists at the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado, have succeeded in building an 8-qubit quantum computer that literally solves complex mathematical algorithms in an alternate universe, then "renders" the right answer in this one, where the observers are located (no kidding). As a side experiment, the team also recently built a "Bush quantum computer" that sends mathematical challenges and word problems into the alternate universe of the Bush Administration. |

If you bought a book at a bookstore and you want to read it on your laptop computer, I see nothing wrong with scanning the book, digitizing the pages and loading them on your computer so you can read it on the road. In fact, I've done this many times. Of course I've never shared these files with anyone, and I would never think of selling them, so I am actually protecting the intellectual property by keeping it to myself.
Yet publishers think that is breaking the law, and movie property owners also think it's breaking the law if you rip movies to other formats. |

The larger island universes are the older ones: they had more time to grow. gions it happened to be high up on the energy hill, and that's where inflation took place.
Linde realized that it was not necessary for the field to start at the highest point of the energy landscape. It could also roll down from some other point on the slope. In fact, the energy hill might have no highest point and keep rising without limit (see Figure 8.4). |

It's kind of like taking a picture of an area with a surveillance satellite, and then focusing in with computer software to enhance and bring out important minute details of the intended target. So, you go from a city block, to a section of road within that block, to focusing on a particular car, and finally enhancing the image enough to read a license plate for the purpose of identifying the owner of the vehicle. |

We started the simulation with a small region of false vacuum, represented by a light square area on the computer screen. After a while, the first dark islands of true vacuum made their appearance. These island universes grew rapidly in size, as their boundaries advanced into the inflating sea. But the inflating regions expanded even faster, so the gaps separating the island universes widened and new island universes formed in the newly created space. |
| Modern analyses, using the latest data on nuclear reactions and extensive computer power, give precise element abundances as they come out of the cosmic furnace. These calculations are in a very impressive agreement with astronomical observations. By studying the spectrum of light emitted by distant objects, astronomers can determine their chemical composition. A firm prediction of the hot big bang theory is that no galaxy in the universe should contain less than 23 percent of helium: helium produced in stars can only increase this primordial abundance. |
