Eating blueberries slashes colon cancer risk by 57 percent, animal study finds

Although the blueberry compound won't cure colon cancer, it represents a strategy for preventing the disease naturally, said Reddy, who specializes in studying the relationship between nutrition and colon cancer. The researchers studied 18 rats in which colon cancer had been induced in a manner similar to human colon cancer development. All of the animals were placed on a balanced diet, with half of the animals' diets supplemented with pterostilbene. After eight weeks, the rats fed pterostilbene had 57 percent fewer pre-cancerous colon lesions compared to the control group.

William Casarella, chairman of the radiology department at Emory University underwent a virtual colonoscopy, a new way to screen for colon cancer using a CT scan instead of a colonoscope, an optical device that's inserted through the rectum and allows doctors to peer inside the colon. Casarella's colon was cancer free on the CT scan, but the image also captured other parts of his abdomen, revealing what looked like tumors on one kidney, a one-inch mass on his liver, and a scattering of lumps on his lungs.

The researchers also noted that pterostilbene inhibited certain genes involved in inflammation, considered a colon cancer risk factor. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. It has been linked to a high intake of saturated fats and calories common in Western diets. Pterostilbene may be able to reverse this process, possibly by lowering lipids, Reddy said. Reddy cited a recent study by co-author Agnes Rimando of the Department of Agriculture. Rimando demonstrated that blueberries, particularly their skins, can lower cholesterol when fed to animals.

Health Begins in the Colon

The scale can also be a useful tool for noting sudden changes in your digestive habits and determining if your colon is functioning as it should. The Bristol Stool Chart Type 1 SEPARATE HARD LUMPS, LIKE NUTS (HARD TO PASS) Type 2 SAUSAGE-SHAPED BUT LUMPY Type 3 (NORMAL) Type 4 (normal) Type 5 Type 6 Type 7 LIKE A SAUSAGE BUT WITH CRACKS ON ITS SURFACE LIKE A SAUSAGE OR SNAKE, SMOOTH AND SOFT SOFT BLOBS WITH CLEAR-CUT EDGES (PASSED EASILY) FLUFFY PIECES WITH RAGGED EDGES, A MUSHY STOOL WATERY, NO SOLID PIECES, ENTIRELY LIQUID Dr. Group has added this category to the original 7.
But, if you're serious about restoring and maintaining your health, you have to start paying more attention to your colon by monitoring your bowel movements. As odd as it may sound, you have to investigate what you eliminate! It's hard to know exactly what's "normal". After all, everyone's body operates a little differently, and we're each exposed to different environments, diets, living conditions, and lifestyles. Nonetheless, you can take advantage of some general indicators to check for normal, healthy bowel movements. Stools should typically be soft and easy to pass.
Type 1 stools have spent the longest amount of time in the colon and are generally difficult to pass. Type 1 stools are a sure sign that you're constipated, full of toxins, and in need of regular intestinal cleansing. These are the most common stools among individuals. Type 2: Stools are sausage-like in appearance but lumpy. These stools also indicate you are constipated, toxic, and need regular intestinal cleansing. Type 3 (Normal): Stools come out similar to a sausage but with cracks in the surface. Type 3 stools are considered normal.
As normal stool passes from the small intestine to the colon, it changes from green to yellow to brown. When transit time is increased due to an underlying condition, your bowel movements can take on a green color. It is also normal for breast-fed infants to have green looking stools due to the Colostrum in breastmilk.
In Part II—How to Live in a Green, Toxin Free Environment, I'm going to explain to you how disease originates from a toxic colon and I'm going to go over some shocking statistics, but my job is to teach you how to prevent disease, how to clean the intestines and body properly, and how to activate your body's self-healing mechanism. I believe people need to know how to address and eliminate the root cause of their health problems as well as addressing any current symptoms they may have. We have other options available to us besides total reliance on the medical system.

And, by the way, one of the big causes of colon cancer (other than the consumption of red meat, which is probably the #1 cause of colon cancer) is the use of sodium nitrite in the U.S. food supply. I don't know whether McDonald's uses sodium nitrite in its own products, but I do know that practically every packaged meat product sold in grocery stores contains sodium nitrite. I also know that the human body is designed to live well past 100.

Overcoming a coffee addiction is one of the best things you can do for colon health. I recommend slowly eliminating coffee from your daily routine. Try substituting store-bought coffee with natural grain coffee. Grain coffee is to coffee as herbal tea is to tea, and grain coffee is naturally caffeine-free. Grain coffee is a ground mixture of grains, nuts, and dried fruit and provides only natural flavors. Grain coffee is available in regular drip coffee-maker and instant brands.

Red meat consumption doubles risk of colon cancer, says study; is it time to go vegetarian yet?

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

This is conjecture, but I'm willing to bet that heavy consumers of red meat probably have quadruple the risk (or more) of colon cancer compared to vegetarians or people who consume no red meat. By the way, you don't have to be a vegetarian to boycott red meat. You can still be a consumer of other sources of animal protein (fish, seafood, etc.) while avoiding red meat. There are plenty of health reasons to avoid eating red meat, and a higher risk of colon cancer is just one of them. The saturated animal fat found in red meat products contributes to heart disease and atherosclerosis.
REPPED: A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows a doubling of the risk of colon cancer for people who are heavy consumers of red meat. More specifically, it shows that the risk doubles compared to those who consume smaller quantities of red meat. But how does this compare to people who consume no red meat at all? This is conjecture, but I'm willing to bet that heavy consumers of red meat probably have quadruple the risk (or more) of colon cancer compared to vegetarians or people who consume no red meat.
There are plenty of health reasons to avoid eating red meat, and a higher risk of colon cancer is just one of them. The saturated animal fat found in red meat products contributes to heart disease and atherosclerosis. In addition, red meat can contain contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides and undesirable environmental pollutants that tend to collect in the fat tissues of cows, which are absorbed into your body when you eat cow fat. And you can't eat red meat without getting some animal fat.

Aloe vera is the best internal medicine for the treatment of colon polyps, in my opinion. It soothes the intestinal tract and helps heal pre-cancerous lesions or growths. In fact, a raw juice diet using vegetable and fruit juices combined with aloe vera gel is practically a miracle cure for early-stage colon cancer. Think of it as a raw juice fast + aloe vera. It's a very powerful cleansing recipe. To blend or not to blend?

Clinical trials are underway to examine the potential of black raspberries to prevent esophageal and colon cancer in humans. Stoner and his team have begun analyzing the effects of the fruit in people with Barrett's esophagus (a condition of the esophagus that increases risk of esophageal cancer) and precancerous colon polyps. Preliminary results show the berries are well tolerated at doses similar to those used in animals.

A very dangerous drug, 5-Fluorouracil (5FU), commonly used in chemotherapy for colon cancer, did not—as purported—reduce mortality. "One can only hope," he wrote, "that the good judgment of the American physician will dissuade him from treating thousands of postoperative colon cancer patients with this toxic drug in the misinformed belief that it will provide them with therapeutic benefit." Two years later, in The New England Journal of Medicine, Moertel still maintained that 5FU had no clinical value.

Yet, of the 145,000 new cases of colon cancer reported each year in the United States, only 5 percent of the people affected have one of the defective genes. In this case—as confusing as it may seem—having the defective gene gives you a very high probability of getting the disease, yet very few people with the disease actually have the gene.20 Obviously, something other than mutated genes is causing the cancer in the majority of people with colon cancers. What is causing the vast majority of cancers and other diseases? One clue comes from the National Institutes of Health.

Don't use when the colon is already empty, or rhubarb's astringent properties may cause colon discomfort. Avoid in cases of arthritis, gout, or kidney or bladder stones. Use only for short periods. When using rhubarb root as a laxative, combine it with carminative herbs such as fennel, ginger, or peppermint to prevent gripe. Rhubarb root and rhizome may temporarily cause urine to appear yellow or red, which is not cause for alarm. Avoid the leaves, which contain high amounts of oxalic acid and are toxic.
