Interview with Dr. Hank Liers, Part 1: Nutritional supplements and cellular energy

The B6 is a coenzyme. Methylcobalamin is a B12 coenzyme. Folinic acid is a folate coenzyme. Coenzymes are the way these things are used in the body. The body has to do more work to get the benefit if you are taking something that is not a coenzyme vitamin, typically most of the stuff found in the vitamins out there. For example, the body cannot use pyridoxine hydrochloride (synthetic vitamin B6). It has to grab an ATP and be phosphorylated before becoming a coenzyme that can be used. I went into supplement design because my wife was chemically sensitive.

Bracts as a coenzyme whose job is primarily connected to the methy-lation process needed for the production of phosphatidylcholine, myelin, melatonin, catecholamines, DNA, RNA, cysteine, and normal red blood cells. Several forms of active B[2 work as coenzymes in the body: adeno-sylcobalamin, methylcobalamin, cyancobalamin (found in supplements and fortified foods because it is the most stable form of B12), and hydrox-ocobalamin. There are many natural Bu analogues in food, but they do not work as active coenzymes in the body and may actually block the active B[2 coenzyme function.

It has to grab an ATP and be phosphorylated before becoming a coenzyme that can be used. I went into supplement design because my wife was chemically sensitive. I became her "doctor" in 1984 and ever since then, I have been finding nutrients, such as coenzyme vitamins and other nutrients that are consistent with human body function -- that work with the body. Coenzymes are not a drag on the human body. The body can just go, "Boom! Used it! It is great. I feel good. It works." That is our thing; we give you something that works to make you healthy.

Studies of coenzyme Q10, however, have shown only modest changes in measures of cardiovascular function that were not directly related to clinical function.33 No studies have shown clinical improvement related to heart-disease treatment or prevention with coenzyme Q10. What Is coenzyme Q10? Coenzyme QlO (CoQlO), or ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble vitamin or vitaminlike substance that is also a potent antioxidant. Trace amounts of CoQlO exist in a variety of foods, such as organ meats, beef, soy oil, sardines, mackerel, and peanuts. The body also has the ability to make CoQlO from the amino acid tyrosine, but this is a complicated process that requires at least eight vitamins and several trace minerals to complete. A deficiency in any one of these nutrients can hinder the body's natural production of CoQlO.

Plasma levels of this enzyme rise during normal pregnancy, reaching highs of 50 percent above normal by the 36th week.

Research reported at the Congress... coenzyme Q10 New finding: A small trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that taking 1,200 milligrams (mg) of coenzyme Q10 (a natural nutrient that is present in all human cells) daily may slow the progression of early-stage Parkinson's disease. More study is needed to confirm that CoQIO does indeed slow the progression of the disease. In addition, because the dosage of CoQIO that was studied was found to be only mildly effective, additional research is also needed to determine whether a higher dose (2,400 mg daily) works better.

Studies of coenzyme Q10 supplementation, however, have shown only modest changes in heart function, with no effect on what we care most about, which is prevention of heart attacks. CHOLESTIN Cholestin is an ancient remedy that has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries for the treatment of heart problems. Derived from yeast on red rice, it is called red rice yeast extract. It has eight statin compounds that are HMG coenzymeA reductase inhibitors, just like statins, that have been shown to reduce cholesterol.

Vitamin B-12 (Cobalamin) Vitamin B-12 is involved in numerous biochemical reactions as a cofactor and coenzyme. Its main functions involve DNA synthesis, methionine synthesis from homocysteine, and conversion of propionyl into succinyl coenzyme A from methylmalonate. The psychiatric manifestations of a vitamin B-12 deficiency include agitation or restlessness, dementia, depression, fatigue, irritability, panic and phobic disorders, personality change, psychosis, mild memory impairment, and negativism.

The mechanism was thought to be inhibition of macrophage 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase. This enzyme is used in the rate-limiting step of cholesterol synthesis (Fuhrman et al, 1997). The susceptibility of low-density lipoproteins to oxidation was not changed by increased lycopene plasma concentrations caused by supplementation with Tomato juice. Fifteen renal transplant patients were given either a synthetic orange drink or Tomato juice for 4 weeks in a crossover study. Plasma lycopene levels increased significantly (p<0.015).

For example, the enzyme cystathionine P-synthase catalyzes homocysteine and serine to form cystathionine. Individuals with a defective form of this enzyme develop very high blood and urine homocysteine levels that can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental retardation, vascular and skeletal problems, and optic lens dislocation.

NAD, the coenzyme, is hydrolyzed or split into niacinamide and adenosine dinucleotide phosphate (ADP-ribose). Niacinamide is converted into niacin, which in turn is once more built into NAD. The enzyme that splits ADP is known as poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, poly (ADP) synthetase, or poly (ADP-ribose) transferase. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase is activated when strands of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) are broken. The enzyme transfers NAD to the ADP-ribose polymer, binding it onto a number of proteins.

Cardiovascular Effects: The most extensive studies of coenzyme Q10 have been in cardiovascular disease, most specifically for its purported benefit in preventing cellular damage during myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (Mortensen 1993; Rengo et al 1993; Greenberg et al 1990). Numerous potential therapeutic mechanisms have been considered.
