They say, "You told me to take cod liver oil, and I get this aftertaste."
Benoit: I have a funny story. I won't say the name of the manufacturer, but somebody in this industry created a grape seed extract. They had it manufactured at a specific contract manufacturer, and, accidentally, fish fills made it into their entire lot. One of their customers said, "I'm taking this grape seed extract and I feel great, but I keep burping fish."
So, it's just funny. A lot of people experience that. It becomes something that continues to deter them from taking the fish oil. |

These vitamins are easily absorbed in the form of cod liver oil. cod liver oil, along with castor oil, was claimed in the past to 'help oil the joints', and will no doubt conjure up some childhood memories for the more mature readers of this book. They were cure-alls used by mothers earlier this century.
Many a child trying to avoid going to school by claiming they 'weren't feeling well' was soon sent scurrying out the door by the threat of a 'dose of oil to fix you up'. Today, cod liver oil is available in convenient and more digestible capsules or tablets. |

The best way to do that is to drink cod liver oil on a daily basis. A tablespoonful of cod liver oil would go a long way toward boosting your vitamin D count and protecting you from chronic disease.
Don't assume that this tastes unpleasant just because it's from fish. cod liver oil is actually close to tasteless. It's sort of like drinking olive oil or corn oil. Additionally, you can buy mint- or orange-flavored cod liver oil from health food stores and it won't taste objectionable at all. You can even mix it into your blended morning drink if you want. |

The other thing we do that is really unique is take that same cod liver oil and put it in a children's supplement called children's DHA. It is a chewable supplement and tastes like bubble gum to kids. Each capsule is the size of a pea. They actually ask for it and enjoy taking it.
Mike: This is so important for the health of children, especially when we're talking about nutrients for the nervous system. There are almost epidemic numbers of children today being diagnosed with ADHD, behavior disorders and aggressive behavior. |
| The product names are Children's DHA and Arctic cod liver oil. Thank you for your time, Corinna.
Benoit: Thank you, Mike. |
| That is why [some manufacturers] might add synthetic vitamin A and D to cod liver oil to make it look more like the standard.
In Arctic Norway, they have a very stringent fishing policy. This ensures that the waters will never be over-fished in regards to cod fishing. Fines can go upwards to a quarter of a million dollars for a fisherman who exceeds what is allowed. There are only a certain number of fishermen certified at one given time. The Norwegian Ocean Institute goes to check the health and tonnage of various species of fish. |
| We have contracts with fishermen, we run the extraction on the cod liver oil, and we provide and produce the purest and the freshest available.
People are concerned with the liver of fish holding toxins, but the distillation technique and the raw materials [we use] ensure that people don't have to worry about these problems. Another concern people have is that cod liver typically has a high level of vitamin A and D. However, the vitamin D being there is half the reason it is as effective as it is, in regards to brain health and [other areas]. |

It was recognized in the mid-1800s that if you gave cod liver oil to children who had rickets, it could cure rickets. And if you gave cod liver oil to children without rickets, it prevented them from getting rickets. So people thought that there was a vitamin present that was necessary for bone health. And that vitamin was finally identified by taking cod liver oil and boiling it, because once you boil cod liver oil, the vitamin A in it gets destroyed. |

Supplements: Scientific data shows that cod liver oil is beneficial for those with roseola. cod liver oil contains vitamin A, vitamin D and essential omega-3 fatty acids, which stimulate immunity among other benefits. Take Vi oz of cod liver oil twice a day; children should take 1 tsp twice a day. Take 250-500 mg of vitamin C two times a day to help stimulate the immune system.
Herbs: Catnip lowers fever and reduces spasms. Peppermint has historically been used to treat colds and fevers. Elder will calm your child and its antiviral properties will reduce fever. |

People think that cod liver oil is going to taste terrible. I tasted this before. This is not at all objectionable and, in fact, with the flavorings you have in it, it is quite delicious.
Benoit: Well, we're starting with the freshest oil on the market because we have the contracts with the fishermen. We are extracting the liver from the fish within four to six hours of it coming in to dock. We can take that liver and put it in a centrifuge within hours of it being present at the dock in Norway. All of our cod is 100 percent arctic cod. Arctic cod stays in a very small area of the world. |

If you ever had a grandmother from the Old World try to force cod liver oil down your throat, she was onto something for the same reason—since it's full of vitamin D, cod liver oil was one of the best ways to prevent rickets, especially before milk was routinely fortified with it. if you're wondering how people who have dark skin make enough vitamin D despite the fact that their skin blocks all those ultraviolet rays, you're asking the right questions. |

And that vitamin was finally identified by taking cod liver oil and boiling it, because once you boil cod liver oil, the vitamin A in it gets destroyed. Originally they thought it was vitamin A that was responsible for bone health, but when they boiled it and destroyed the vitamin A, the anti-ricketic activity, that is the bone health activity, was still present in the cod liver oil. And so it was named vitamin D, because there had already been identified a vitamin A, a B and a C, so the next in line was vitamin D.
Adams: So this was many decades ago then?

Today, there's a lot of talk about healthy fish oils and cod liver oil. What is cod liver oil but the oil that's squeezed out of the liver organ of a codfish? In the same way, cow brain oil, if there were such a product, would be the oil squeezed out of the brain organ of the cow. They are essentially the same concept, and they both produce very healthy oils from a nutritional point of view. Everybody knows, for example, that DHA is an important oil for the brain health of infants and children. Those who eat more DHA have been clinically proven to be smarter in adulthood. |

A popular approach of using cod liver oil to supplement vitamin D deserves awareness and a bit of caution. One tablespoon of vitamin D— fortified cod liver oil supplies 1,400 IU of vitamin D but also contains high levels of vitamin A,
Current Dietary
Recommendations for Vitamin D
Adequate Tolerable Age Intake Upper Limits
0-50 200 IU/day 2,000 IU/day
51-70 400-800 IU/day 2,000 IU/day
Over 70 800 or more IU/day 2,000 IU/day
Higher doses than those listed as adequate or even upper limits will be needed by women who have had their vitamin D levels tested and found to be low or low normal. |

In World War I, German physicians used a mixture of honey and cod liver oil to treat gunshot wounds. According to John Riddle, professor of ancient science at North Carolina State University, a medical text written on papyrus from 3000 years B.C. specifies the use of honey for head wounds. He says that perhaps "the honey helped prevent swelling and sealed off the wound to keep air and infection out."
Recent Research shows that honey is far superior to antiseptics and antibiotics. Israeli researchers took honey to the test. |

Make sure you get enough anti-inflammatory essential fatty acids (omega-3s) in the form of fatty fish, walnuts, flax seeds, cod liver oil, fish oil, and flax seed oil. Also make sure you drink plenty of water— aim for at least eight glasses a day. Identify aggravating substances, including food dyes and colorings, artificial preservatives, and additives, and eliminate them from your diet. Avoid dietary sources of arachidonic acid (found in animal products), which contributes to inflammation.
Supplements: Vitamin C has natural antihistamine effects. |

Three and one-half ounces of cod liver oil contain 570 milligrams of cholesterol, which equals the amount found in two egg yolks.
The fourth advantage of flax seed oil over fish oil is the fact that fish are often high in toxic residues because they live in polluted waters. The fifth reason flax seed is more propitious is that high levels of fish oil are rich in vitamins A and D, which can be toxic in high doses. Please note that the provitamin carotene, which is converted by the body to utilizable vitamin A, cannot be toxic like animal-sourced vitamin A. |
