Since the advent of the industrial age, the atmospheric burden of mercury in our environment— meaning the amount falling from the sky from waste from coal combustion, incineration, mining, coal-fired utilities, and industrial boilers—has tripled. In the United States, coal-fired power plants alone spew about fifty tons of mercury into the air each year. |

| Therefore no abatement procedures necessary for sulfur and nitrogen; coal has higher content of ash with no value, biomass ash content is lower and has value as fertilizer; coal conversion mobilizes toxic trace metals and coal tars are highly carcinogenic; coal mining is destructive while biomass production improves land; coal production increases CO2 in atmosphere, biomass does not.
Economic—small scale use of biomass results in lower shipping costs and less difficult conversion; centralized large scale use of coal is required to offset the high cost of environmental control. |

That's about as much as all the coal plants in a sizeable nation, yet the EPA pretends mercury fillings have no environmental impact whatsoever.
Aspartame, too, is a known toxic substance that's well documented as a neurotoxin. And fluoridation? Well, let's just say that once you realize where the "fluoride" really comes from (it's a toxic waste chemical scraped off the emissions scrubbers of coal-fired power plants), you start to understand the magnitude of the fluoridation scam.
Any genuine health care reform should start with one simple principle: stop poisoning the people. |

The unprecedented 9 percent a year that China's economy has been growing since 2001, the 25 percent of the world's steel it consumes, the 10 percent of the world's electricity, the 30 percent of its coal, the coal-fired power plant it is building every week, entices and haunts Europeans and Americans alike. McKinsey & Company predicts that at the current rate of growth, one quarter of the world's total factory output will come from China by 2025.? |

Some ingredients that may be found in vaccines are:20
Phenol (carbolic acid), distilled from coal or coal tar. Formaldehyde, a known cancer causing agent, which is commonly used to embalm corpses. þMercury (thimerosal), a toxic heavy metal and a neurological poison, which accumulates in the brain.
Alum, a preservative.
Aluminum phosphate, a toxin used in deodorants. Aluminum is a neurological poison that accumulates in the brain. þAcetone, a solvent used in fingernail polish remover; very volatile, passes easily through the placenta. |

| When heated in the absence of air, coal is converted into coal gas and coal tar, which is a viscous black liquid. Ninety-five percent of synthetic colorings used in the U.S. are coal-tar derivatives. Red dye number 2 is the most infamous of these. But none of them should be used. Their health risks are beyond dispute. By the way, I would also stay away from other dyes, such as hair dyes.
Two thirds of the food additives used in the United States are synthetic flavorings. Do we need them? |

The coal is transported through pipes to power plants in Las Vegas and Los Angeles; 2,700 gallons per minute of water from the unrechargeable water table is pumped out to push the coal through the pipes. Native Indians, depending on the moisture level in the desert for their survival, are facing a severe agricultural and ecological crisis. Hopi elders report that the corn has grown considerably smaller this past season. |

Patricia Bragg, whose company makes one of the best-known and respected apple cider vinegars on the market, the "clean white" vinegar you get at the supermarket is a food chemist's invention made from coal tar and has none of the health properties of real, fermented, organic vinegar. Distilled vinegar is no better.
Distilling turns the vinegar into steam and in the process destroys the natural malic and tartaric acids, which are important in fighting body toxins and inhibiting unfriendly bacteria. To get the health benefits of vinegar, get the real thing. |

It has become something of a cliche to talk about the 'canary in the coal mine' when discussing climate impacts on the natural world - but one group of animals more than any other exemplifies this point: the amphibians. With their moist skins and early lives in water, frogs, salamanders and toads are particularly vulnerable to changes in their environment. Indeed, an amphibian - the Costa Rican golden toad - is often cited as the first known case of a global warming extinction. |
| The Amazon is a canary in a coal mine for the earth,' the ecologist Dan Nepstad told a reporter from Reuters. 'As we enter a warming trend we are in uncertain territory' Nepstad should know. An acknowledged world expert on the Amazon, he has spent years investigating the impact of drought on the rainforest ecosystem. His work gives scientific weight to an otherwise common-sense conclusion: that the drier the forest gets, the more susceptible it is to fire.
To anyone used to hearing about wildfires in places like Spain or California, this would seem obvious. |
| Unique amongst animals, we humans have been able to break out of the ecological constraints imposed by a finite annual budget of solar energy by using the chemical energy stored geologically in oil, coal and gas. We no longer have to rely on nature's annual bounty, because to all intents and purposes we can eat oil.
So fossil fuels, more than any other factor, have made humans successful. Other animals have to live within the constraints of their ecosystems, where their numbers are regulated by food supply, predators and so on. |

The incomplete burning of fuels such as natural gas, oil, kerosene, propane, coal, and wood produce carbon monoxide. Also, fuel-burning appliances that are not working properly or are installed incorrectly can produce fatal concentrations of carbon monoxide in your home. Other hazards include burning charcoal indoors and running a car in the garage, both of which can lead to dangerous levels of CO in your home.
The following simple tips from the Centers for Disease Control will prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. |

Shifting from coal to wood biomass, therefore, although desirable in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, would by this measure end up displacing even more of nature than we already have.
States of denial
Energy realities are not the only reason why our response to global warming has hitherto been so half-hearted. Our evolutionary psychology preconditions us not to respond to threats which can be postponed until later. We are good at mobilising for immediate battles, less good at heading off challenges which still lie far into the future. |
| The liquidation of coal produces much more C02 than conventional refining - so peak oil in this case would worsen global warming.
Other 'unconventional oil' sources are similarly polluting - the extraction of oil from the tar sand deposits in the Canadian province of Alberta uses vast quantities of steam and natural gas, meaning that the 'energy returned on energy invested' ratio is dangerously low and emissions dangerously high. Global gas supplies will last longer than oil, but not indefinitely - estimates of the date for 'peak gas' vary from one to eight decades away from now. |

It seems amazing to think that coal burned in early steam trains like Stephenson's Rocket is still warming the planet today.) Even if we ceased all emissions tomorrow, therefore, it would take many centuries for the Earth to once again reach thermal equilibrium in a new, hotter state. Expecting today's Pliocene COz levels to equate to Pliocene temperatures tomorrow would be like expecting a kettle to boil instantly.
On the positive side, this suggests that if we switch the C02 'kettle' off quickly, we can probably avoid hitting three degrees for another century at least. |

Fig. IV: Smog trapped over Los Angeles releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, thinning the protective ozone layer. An excess of ultraviolet B radiation is allowed through areas of the ozone layer that have become too thin. The ultraviolet B rays infiltrate the ocean and disrupt the phytoplankton's ability to produce oxygen. Moreover, some estimates state at least 100 acres of trees are cut down every minute. The loss of forestry further depletes oxygen levels and allows carbon dioxide levels to rise. |

Most people rented, and most houses were heated by wood and coal. More than half of households lacked a refrigerator and about a third didn't have running water. Nearly half the labor force worked in farm, factory, mining, or construction jobs.65 Should one be unable to support oneself and one's family, there were few alternatives other than the poorhouse, the state hospital, or religious and charitable organizations, and the taint or moral shame associated with those institutions was profound and extreme. It's only recently that supports of various kinds have been in place. |
