Sponsor and perform clinical research on how to cure and reverse the neuropathy caused by statins. 4. Perform clinical research and recommend the best drug treatments to mitigate the pain and make other symptoms of statin-induced neuropathy more tolerable. 5. Proactively offer reparation to statin users who have suffered neuropathy. The petition will be presented to the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufactuers Association and to the Medical Affairs Departments of the companies listed, as well as any additional companies that may be identified as relevant over time http://www.petitiononline. |

In the past twenty years, most of the clinical research on herbal products has been conducted in Germany, France, Eastern Europe, Thailand, Japan, China, and India. Most studies are hard to access in the United States or have never been translated into English. Traditional medical systems in India and China have extensive documentation of the use of botanicals, but the use of classic Western clinical research methods in studying them has been limited. |

That's called basic research. clinical research may be very hands-on, with patients actively involved in experiments, or it may be applied, with a researcher comparing biological samples from patients—for example, blood or muscle tissue—to those from healthy comparison subjects. In this way, scientists can discover differences that might lead to an understanding of the biology of the disease.
Another kind of clinical research consists of doing drug trials. |

| Radiation Therapy Helps 94% of Younger Men Who Have Prostate Cancer
Andre Konski, MD, clinical research director, radiation oncology department, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia.
Durado Brooks, MD, director of prostate cancer, American Cancer Society. Cancer.

Aradiation treatment that is commonly used to treat prostate cancer in men older than 55 is equally effective in younger men, according to the results of a preliminary study.

In the study, Dr. |
| Andre Konski, clinical research director of the radiation oncology department at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in
Philadelphia, and his colleagues studied 84 men who underwent external beam radiation treatment for prostate cancer five years before.
They compared the outcomes of patients younger than 55 with those 60 to 69 years of age and with those 70 and older. All of the men were in similar stages of the disease.
At the five-year mark, Konski's team found no statistically significant difference in the health status of the men in the three groups. |

This could create a whole new way to conduct clinical research: Track the health results in people who have taken nothing! Think of what we could accomplish in medical science by following this model -- we could test thousands of different substances by simply giving them to no one, then declaring whatever results we wish to notice!
Ultimately, that's what's going on here anyway. Researchers are simply declaring whatever they want with no real regard to scientific truth or common sense. Much of medical science today has become a self-reinforcing exercise in pro-pharma dogma. |

It used to be all about gathering information to improve health. Now, clinical research is aimed at gathering information that will maximize return on investment."
Given that drug and device companies are in business to sell products, not to increase medical knowledge, it's not surprising that they don't want to pay for research that might hurt the bottom line. For doctors, patients, and payers, however, this creates two problems. |
| Five years ago, he quit his practice to form the Delfini Group, which consists of Stuart and Sheri Ann Strite, a former research coordinator at Group Health with extensive experience designing clinical research protocols. Together, the two travel the country, teaching doctors to think more analytically about medical science. "Doctors have no idea how to evaluate the medical literature," Stuart says, "because they were never taught. |
| Pressed for time, physicians often skim the journals, reading only the abstracts and conclusions of articles and missing the clues buried inside that a piece of clinical research was poorly designed, or that the results were incorrectly interpreted. But even doctors who want to be more discerning, says Stuart, can't always tell the difference between a good study and a bad one, because they don't know how.
In June 2006, Stuart and Strite spent three days with a group of back surgeons in Boise, Idaho. |
| These are just a few of the questions that can only be answered if we stop leaving the job of funding clinical research to the pharmaceutical industry.
NINE The Doctor Isn't In
There was a time when Gordon Peabody thought that being a doctor was the greatest job in the world. As a pediatrician just starting out in Spokane, Washington, in the 1970s, he had colleagues he liked and respected and a full practice of wonderful parents and patients. He didn't mind going to the emergency room if one of his patients was injured, or staying up all night in the hospital with an asthmatic child. |
| We wouldn't leave clinical research to the drug industry, which has a vested interest in the outcome. Our doctors would make clear to us that they really didn't know if the PSA test would reduce our chances of dying prematurely, and that they had no idea if spinal fusion would ease the pain in our backs. Then they could help us weigh the various trade-offs before we decided to undergo a test, surgery, or treatment.
If we know anything about our current, dysfunctional system, we would also want health care that's more coordinated. |

It was possible, its advocates said, to believe that the symptoms of illness "meant" something, that bodies could speak—but to do so while still believing in statistics, modern clinical research, and laboratory physiology.
What this meant in practice was that American psychosomatic medicine focused less on holistic concepts of mind-body unity and more on exploring the effects of particular psychological factors on particular diseases. |
| The paper had two goals: on the one hand, it argued for a new understanding of placebos and their effects; on the other, it urged the adoption of a new research methodology to remove (among other things) the distorting influence of placebo effects from clinical research settings.
For Beecher, placebos were not harmless humbugs, psychotherapy by other means offered to patients who could not otherwise be helped. |

| A review of omega-3 functions in the retina from the National Eye Institute's Division of Epidemiology and clinical research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids play a pivotal role in protecting the retina. They should be included in any program for eye health and vision preservation. And while you're at it, take a multivitamin. An analysis of data from the Physicians Health Study shows that taking a multivitamin supplement can decrease the risk of cataracts.

Between 1996 and 2002, the portion of the public who distrusted information from clinical research professionals shot up, from 28 percent to 75 percent.91 The New York Times noted that by 2005, consumers seemed to be less confident in drug marketing. "A lot of the demand that the industry has created over the years has been through promotion, and for that promotion to be effective, there has to be trust," said Richard Evans, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Company, an investment research company. "That trust has been lost. |
