| But my point is simply this: However you choose to live, make sure it's a conscious choice, and that it's your own choice—not the choice of some voice from your upbringing, or the Joneses' choice, or your coworkers' choice, or Gary Null's choice. If you make conscious choices based on your own needs, chances are, your emotional environment will be a nontoxic one. We'll be talking more about these issues, particularly in relation to stress-reduction, in Chapter 13, on affirmations.

Free choice. It's a tricky thing, you see. Almost everybody says they want it, but nobody wants to be responsible for the consequences of it. When people exercise free choice by smoking cigarettes, they still want somebody else to pay for their cancer or heart disease. To me, that's not free choice: that's acting as a parasite on society. That's nothing more than shifting responsibility to someone else when your own free choice turns out to be the wrong choice. Some people even think health care is a "right. |

Through the choice of the way we use our dollars, we can economically starve this whole system of conventional medicine into its own overdue collapse.
Why do you think health insurance won't cover naturopathic therapies? It's because if consumers had a choice, almost everyone would now choose natural therapies instead of drugs and surgery! If consumers were actually given a choice right today, organized medicine would collapse tomorrow. The whole system is only propped up by limiting consumers' choices, keeping them in the dark, and limiting access to natural therapies that actually work. |

Given what is known and what is yet unknown about these mutations, it seems to us that there should be a third choice: to carefully monitor the situation, but to avoid major surgery—which is not risk free—in the absence of symptoms. Note that we are not advocating this third strategy, but rather only its inclusion in the choices available. For reading the history of surgery, we note too many times that procedures are done and later judged to be "unnecessary." Given what we know about doctoring, it is also obvious that "personal choice" is in most cases a sham. |

In fact, there's nothing harmful in glass, and it's the container of choice for health-conscious consumers.
Of course, glass breaks easily, and it's heavy. These two factors make plastic the obvious choice for cost-conscious companies who are mass-marketing their juices through the retail channels (grocery stores, etc.) But make no mistake: glass is the container of choice for health-conscious consumers.

Candles are a terrible choice because people fall asleep and burn down their homes with candles. (No kidding.) Flashlights that need batteries are also a terrible choice because few people bother to check the batteries, and they always seem to be dead right when you need them.
The best choice is a dynamo-powered LED flashlight that allows you to generate light by simply turning the handle. One minute of winding the dynamo handle can provide up to 30 minutes of light with the LED flashlights we offer through www.BetterLifeGoods. |

WHATTO LOOK FOR IN A GOOD PROBIOTIC
When it comes to picking a probiotic there are many choices. The choice is often confusing, though, because of the number of different bacteria strains available, the process of manufacturing, and the way companies label their products. Today you can find products containing one strain of bacteria and others with twenty strains. The most common are Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. bifidus; these are supported by more research and have been in use longer than any of the other choices. |

The hucksters running organized medicine today realize this! They know that consumers are tied to drugs and surgery by a single flimsy thread: Health insurance. |

The doctors' choice in stool softeners is usually docusate sodium or docusate calcium. Although the evidence of their effectiveness is
** Docusate Sodium
Available as Colace and Ex-Lax Stool Softener, and generically under various store brand names. Acts a wetting agent to help stool absorb more water and thus become softer. Expect this product to take up to 3 or 4 days to work.
Side effects: Rash, throat irritation, nausea Cost: Approximately 250 to 500 per dose
þ ?? Milk of Magnesia
This usually works fairly rapidly, within several hours. Each dose should be taken with 8 ounces of water. |
| Prunes are said to be loaded with antioxidant phytonutrients, so they are a healthy choice if consumed in moderation. They are not the only dried fruit that can be helpful in an attempt to overcome constipation. Dried figs and even apricots provide a little variety. They may not have any specifically laxative components, but they certainly are good sources of fiber, and some people find them quite helpful.
Dried apricots (two a day) and plenty of water can relieve constipation. It helps me and has helped my friends.
FLAXSEED
Another source of fiber is not nearly as well known as prunes. |
| The dermatologist has given me topical prescription creams that haven't done much good, and has said my only other choice would be oral antibiotics.
Recently I started applying Neospo-rin ointment to the affected areas of my face. The difference is miraculous! I am practically blemish free after only 2 weeks of this treatment. Any blemishes I do get are very small and disappear within a few days of applying the Neo-sporin. Have you heard of this? My teenager tells me that some of her friends do the same.

| Our first choice in air-cleaning technology is the HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. These devices are made of densely packed fibers that look like thick paper. The filters are pleated or folded and look like a mini-accordion. That way they maximize the air's contact with the filter. Industrial-strength HEPA filters are used in computer clean rooms, pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, and hospitals, where it is essential to trap very small dust particles.
To install a whole-house HEPA filter you will need professional help. |

You will find a continuum of options, from home remedies to the latest prescription breakthroughs. For underarm sweating, for example, a person might try simply applying milk of magnesia to his or her armpits. This unique approach is far cheaper than getting Botox injections, which do work amazingly well for heavy sweating. One mother wrote to us to say, "My daughter had skin reactions to all the deodorants she tried. The rash and itching were uncomfortable. |

With all the good news about pomegranate juice, many people wonder exactly how much juice they should drink. I find this to be a curious question, borrowed from the pharmaceutical mindset of the population where everything has to have a dosage and side effects disclaimer.

They used to say smoking was a personal choice too. But if someone is smoking next to you or wearing fragrance next to you, you don't have a choice," said the psychologist and mother of four. Carolyn was working at a hospital in 1991 when she started feeling ill: headaches, trouble breathing, teary eyes. At first she suspected her symptoms were related to the massive renovations under way at the hospital because she felt better when she left work. But soon, it didn't matter where she was — at home, out shopping — Carolyn felt sick. |

Each small choice adds up. By making small, carefully calculated—and relatively simple—decisions that help us to lessen or eliminate as many chemicals as possible, we decrease the influx of agents that have the potential to tax our immune systems to the point that our bodies make costly mistakes and disease ensues. When we think of the body's capacity to deal successfully with chemical, viral, heavy metal, and emotional stressors as analogous to a barrel that should never be filled to the point of overflowing, we can begin to see each choice we make as one that matters greatly. |

In all these situations there is an element of choice: we can influence whether we are happy or sad, by being deliberately optimistic or pessimistic,- we can take off clothes if we are hot, or put them on if we are cold. The same is true of health: we can influence our health by what we do and our mental attitude. Unhappy or stressed people are frequently in poor health.
Asthmatics also have to consider how they breathe. They have choices. |

Poor choice: Juice blends containing some amount of superfruit juice (but mostly apple juice and grape juice or water), made from concentrate, packaged in plastic.
Stupid choice: Juice drinks made with high fructose corn syrup and water, containing a small amount of actual juice, packaged in plastic. These are by far the cheapest juice drinks on the market.

Giving Patients a Choice
Over the past seven or eight years, I have taken a different attitude: I use medication as a last resort—not as my first choice. I have been amazed at how many of my patients are actually willing to become more proactive with their health if even a slight chance exists that they could avoid taking any medication. Oh, sure, I still have those patients who do not consider changing. For them, I still have the drugs.
There are also those patients whose condition is serious enough that I have to start them on medication right away. |

Another theme, personal choice, also didn't fly with the focus group. In response to an argument that adults should be allowed to make their own decisions about cosmetic products as they do about alcohol and tobacco, participants asked, "Didn't the tobacco industry lie to us for years?" Other industry lines tested on the focus groups included:
• People have been using these products for decades with no problems.
• We only get 150 consumer complaints a year about minor things like rashes.
• We list our ingredients so consumers have a choice. |
| I think it's just so great that kids are now finding out that they do have a choice and they can make positive choices for the better. When I really step back and think about it, this could be the start of something so big," says Katie, smiling brightly.

In reality, the choice is usually not whether to spend, but what to spend it on. Given the choice of spending $1,500 to purchase a home defibrillator, "or spending a comparable amount of money on a bicycle, a smoking cessation program, a health club membership, or treatment of hypertension," writes one skeptic, "most people would be better served by choosing one of the latter for themselves or a loved one."20
As profound skeptics of medicalization, we agree. |
| In an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine, one physician concludes:
Whether the resulting reduction in the risk of breast cancer, combined with intensive surveillance, is preferable to the more complete protection offered by prophylactic mastectomy is likely to remain a highly personal choice.35

We have heard for years that eating garlic or celery can lower blood pressure. The data on garlic are mixed, though. There have been nine meaningful studies to date. Six have demonstrated some benefit while the other three produced no reduction in blood pressure.619 A meta-analysis of all the garlic research published in the Archives ofInternal Medicine came to the following conclusion: "Trials suggest possible small short-term benefits of garlic on some lipid and antiplatelet factors, insignificant effects on blood pressure, and no effect on glucose levels. |
