Chlorinated water can enter our bodies in more than just the obvious ways. We can inhale chlorine in gas form, as steam from a hot shower, and/or absorb it through our skin! Some membranes can be destroyed by chlorinated water, highly alkaline water, or temperatures above 100?Fahrenheit. If the water is chlorinated, a cellulose membrane is needed. A polymer membrane can be used if the water is not chlorinated.
Some people have had the membrane break in less than the expected three years. For this reason, it is good to check the water purity regularly. Newer and stronger membranes are now available on the market, but we are still in the habit of checking the water purity every four months and/or whenever there is a change in the taste. |

| It's estimated over 200 million Americans have at least marginally chlorinated water pumped into their homes every day for washing clothes, bathing, cooking, and drinking.
Chlorine may be effective at eliminating many pathogens, but its presence in drinking water does more harm than good. When chlorine is added to water, it bonds with other natural compounds to form Trihalo-methanes (THM's). Treating seeds or sprouts with chlorinated water or other disinfectants, diminishes but does not eradicate the pathogens. Even those who drink chlorinated water appear to be at risk. A study in Wisconsin found that those living in communities that chlorinated their water had higher levels of blood cholesterol than people in communities that did not.
Solvents such as alcohol and the commonly used dry-cleaning agent and paint thinner trichloroethylene also appear to damage cholesterol metabolism. Since reducing your body's exposure to the above chemicals can result in lower cholesterol levels, it makes sense to do all you can to achieve this. |
