Chiropractic
Unlike homeopathy, chiropractic treatment has made its way more successfully into the mainstream and has succeeded in achieving some degree of tolerance by Western medicine. The manipulation of the spine and various forms of massage have been demonstrated with fair consistency in some well-designed studies to have benefit in some conditions. Perhaps understandably, these approaches are most effective when dealing with musculoskeletal problems. At the very least, chiropractic treatments and massage can contribute to cognitive health by reducing anxiety and lowering stress. |

The word chiropractic is derived from the Greek words cheiro, meaning hand, and practikos, practical, and describes the modality: it is done by hand. chiropractic is a method of healing human diseases and injuries by adjusting the body. It has increased in popularity in more recent years, and in most countries it is now fully accepted as a natural and effective healing method. |

When people think of chiropractic treatment, most think "back pain relief," but that is only a part of what chiropractic focuses on.
The muscular structure that holds our spines and other body parts in proper alignment can become weakened due to various stresses, improper nutrition, and lack of fitness. As this happens, the spinal vertebrae, and discs between them, can slip out of place. This "subluxation" creates pressure on, or irritates, spinal nerves. The nervous system provides pathways for energy and command signals to flow from one part of the body to another. |

I had not yet passed the Washington State chiropractic board exam, which necessitated the bimonthly trek to Montana where my chiropractic practice was still flourishing, in spite of my very part-time schedule there.
Notwithstanding the title of "chiropractor," I had somewhat of a reputation in my local community for being this strange guy who practiced weird medicine. I was accustomed to unusual cases arriving at my doorstep. In this instance, the mother told me that her little girl had gone to the neurologist and had been diagnosed with a lazy eye. |

Denounced by the American Medical Association, chiropractic and other energy-based modalities fell into disrepute. Radioesthesiasts disappeared completely.
In the last forty years, chiropractic has made great inroads in the healing arts. In 1990, chiropractors won a lengthy court battle against the medical monopoly when the American Medical Association was found guilty of illegal attempts to destroy the profession. Since then, chiropractic has spread its sphere of influence—it is even accepted in some hospitals. |

The essential problem, as I will illustrate in subsequent chapters, was that the theories of the body on which medical systems like homeopathy, allopathy, chiropractic, and osteopathy were based were mutually exclusive. One could not readily abide by the rule that like cured like and yet accept the argument that all diseases stemmed from disorders of the skeletal system. Still less could followers of homeopathy or osteopathy accommodate the long-established belief that one should treat a symptom or disease with its opposite. |

Integrator 5 is sometimes called the chiropractic Integrator because it communicates bioenergetically with your vertebra and discs via your spinal nerves. Balance is controlled, bioenergetically speaking, via this Integrator through its connection to the cerebellum and cochlear nerve. |

For over 12 years and with the full knowledge and support of their executive officers, the AMA paid the salaries and expenses for a team of more than a dozen medical doctors, lawyers, and support staff for the expressed purpose of conspiring [overtly and covertly] with others in medicine to first contain, and eventually, destroy the profession of chiropractic in the United States and elsewhere," writes journalist Kenny Ausubel in When Healing Becomes A Crime.
As an organization, the AMA is just not very nice. As investigative reporter Mike Adams writes on the excellent website NewsTarget, " .. |
| Acupuncture, chiropractic, image therapy, and other treatments all come under this heading. And, of course, exercise. (By now I hope you realize that any of these treatments can be combined with supplements and healing foods for even more dramatic results.)
Some nutrients have so many uses that I simply could not choose one specific condition to attach them to. Their health benefits are so broad, so helpful for multiple conditions, or so essential for dozens of metabolic processes that I decided to give them their own special category. |
| Because chiropractic adjustment treats the root cause—a misalignment of the body's structure that ultimately produces a painful inflammatory response. By realigning the vertebrae and other bones, the cause of the inflammation is removed. Back pain is gone—not because its symptoms were suppressed with drugs, but because the body no longer needs to send a message to your brain saying "Pay attention! Something is deeply wrong down here! |
| Though chiropractors will typically use other modalities besides adjustment—ice, muscle stimulation, and other physical therapies—the corrective series of chiropractic adjustments remains their number-one tool with a bullet.
Fixing the Problem, Not the Symptom
Besides "fixing" the pain, chiropractors also focus on rehabilitative exercise, stabilization, and flexibility.
"Remember the subluxation happens in a complex system—there's a bone, a nerve, and a soft tissue component. |
| To top it off, chiropractic care was more cost effective overall.
If you've never experienced bad back pain, you're one of the lucky ones. Back pain is the second most frequent problem that brings people to a doctor's office (the common cold is the first). Back pain is also one of the most common reasons for missed work. Experts estimate that 80 percent of the world population will experience back pain at some point in their life. According to the American College of Rheumatology, lower back pain disables 5. |

Whether or not the chiropractic or physical therapy or myriad other practices are effective, they have a minimal impact on life or death.
Our previous examples were like foreign wars. But civil wars, that is internal debates within medicine itself, are quite common. The tonsillectomy that I had as a child is no longer done routinely. For two examples since the millennium, hormone replacement is no longer routinely recommended for menopausal women, nor are bone marrow transplants seen as efficacious treatment for breast cancer.
A week later we were still discussing the boundary issue. |

If you and your doctors can't communicate well, you may be tempted to turn your back on traditional medicine and venture into the areas of alternative and complementary medicine, where instead of a physician with a medical degree, you may deal with chiropractic, naturopathic, or homeopathic physicians. Some of these kinds of treatment may indeed play a role in getting you well, but others maybe worthless, expensive, or even dangerous. Charting those troubled waters is the grist for chapter 10.
For now, though, we're going to stay focused on more traditional medicine. |
| That may be one reason why some of my patients with pain often report being helped by chiropractic massage and manipulation. Once again, applying the Natelson Six-Week Rule is important. If you see a benefit after six weeks, you and your doctor should discuss continuing the massage treatments. If you honestly haven't seen any results after six weeks, it will be time to move on to other treatments.

I mean, there's a lot of skepticism just about chiropractic medicine still existing in conventional medicine. I think chiropractic medicine has a very strong track record at this point -- no question about it. But beyond that, anyone who says that they can treat any condition with such a high rate of success is going to be treated with extra skepticism.
Ben: Raised eyebrows, in other words.
Dr. Whitcomb: It would be better if I said 50 percent, you know? It would probably be more believable.
Mike: Right. But I'm sure you've had your share of skeptics on this. How do you answer the skeptics? |

Based on treating the entire patient and not just the symptoms, integrative medicine is a mix of proven Eastern and Western disciplines, giving patients the benefits of practices that have worked for thousands of years — Ayurveda, acupuncture, chiropractic, energy healing, tai chi, massage therapy, etc. — coupled with more modern techniques of traditional Western medicine. Unfortunately, most health insurance companies do not pay for preventive "alternative" therapies, so people must spend their hard-earned money to take advantage of integrative medicine. |

Thus, voices from within the major medical heterodoxies—particularly homeopathy, chiropractic, osteopathy, acupuncture, Ayurveda, 'traditional Chinese medicine', and herbal medicine—are calling for regulation or the legal right to self-regulate. And governments are debating the same issues, while increasing funding for 'scientific' research into the efficacy of heterodox practices (to the disgust of many in the biomedical community). In 1991, Congress mandated the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate 'unconventional medicine'. |

We make no apologies for including esoteric or unusual therapies in this book,- they may not, at present, have scientific acceptance, but twenty years ago neither did acupuncture and chiropractic, which are widely used today by medical practitioners.
A Personal View
Ron has been a severe asthmatic since childhood so asthma has always been a part of his life. Ron remembers: 'My father suffered from asthma, constantly wheezing and being extremely short of breath. |
| I became interested in alternative medicine, and trained in various disciplines—naturopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, homeopathy, herbal medicine, massage and German high-tech bio-energetic medicine. My health has improved so much that I completed a full marathon when I was forty-five, when previously I could not run 500 metres without wheezing, coughing or setting off a severe attack. 1 have had no need to take any prescribed drugs for many years.'
This holistic view of health and asthma is central to this book: asthma has many causes, and many treatments may bring relief. |
| Osteopathy is not, however, limited to adjustments in the way chiropractic is. A practitioner may also correct posture with simple exercises and toning of body muscles. Other treatments are also important: to ensure the lymphatic and blood systems' drainage is working efficiently and to improve arterial blood flow. Treatments used in conjunction with osteopathy may include immunology, prescription medicine, psychology and other modern disciplines. The osteopath will often use electrical or mechanical equipment, heat, massage, hydrotherapy or recommend surgery if necessary. |
| Many colleges have faculties in both chiropractic and osteopathy with undergraduate studies running side by side. In some countries many medical practitioners are also osteopaths.
OSTEOPATHY AMD ASTHMA
Osteopathic techniques may improve asthma as they invigorate the blood and nerve supplies. Consequently the patient's general health improves, which in turn improves the asthmatic condition. |
| Goodheart, an American doctor of chiropractic, is recognised as the originator of applied kinesiology. He determined that when the muscles are in good working order, so is the body, and his research further discovered that each muscle group related to particular parts of the body—the heart, lungs, digestive system, glands, bones, circulation and so on.
Muscles are reliant on good supplies of blood and lymph—the body fluid which drains the tissues via the lymphatic system, carrying away toxins and substances to be excreted—to keep healthy. |

True chiropractic treatment focuses on restoring health to the entire spinal column and balancing the nervous system to restore life force to an optimum level, so energy can flow freely from the head down, and from inside to the outside. There is strong logic to support the practice of regular, gentle spinal adjustment as part of an ongoing personal health program to promote the efficient flow of energy within the body.
When seeking the services of a chiropractor, it is important to ask what the doctor's philosophy is. |
