Bill Sardi See book keywords and concepts | A study in Britain now shows there is a relationship of some sort between childhood cancer and proximity of home address at birth to high voltage power lines. [British Medical Journal 330:1290, 2005] But this may only be an association, not a causal relationship as EMFs lose their strength with increasing distance from their source, in this case, distant power lines. Childhood exposure to EMFs is near zero from power lines. [British Medical Journal 331:634-635, 2005]

Not So Hot Trends
The normalization of cancer is everywhere. | Herbert Ross, DC with Keri Brenner, L.Ac. See book keywords and concepts | Wertheimer and others said in their studies on power lines that constant surrounding levels of 3 milligauss or more were significantly related to increases in the risk of childhood cancer. Dr. Becker advocates 1 milligauss as a safe limit for continuous exposure to 60-hertz fields (the usual kind generated by electric power systems).13
Electromagnetic Fields and Sleep Disorders
Researchers suspect artificial EMFs cause sleep problems in a number of ways. | Tori Hudson, N.D. See book keywords and concepts | Naturopathic doctors recommend checking the pregnant mother's diet for vitamin K deficiency and adding oral supplementation of vitamin K in the last month of pregnancy, if needed, rather than automatically giving the shots, which have been shown in some studies to link with childhood cancer.62
Vitamin K (along with vitamin C) is effective in preventing the nausea and vomiting of early pregnancy, and it may reduce the risk of intraventricular hemorrhage in premature infants.63 Some food sources are parsley and brown rice. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | Recent examples include issuing a joint statement with the Chlorine Institute justifying the continued global use of persistent organochlorine pesticides, and also supporting the industry in trivializing dietary pesticide residues as avoidable risks of childhood cancer. ACS policies are further exemplified by allocating under 0.1 percent of its $700 million annual budget to environmental and occupational causes of cancer."
You can read the incredible history of the ACS's opposition to regulation of toxic chemicals here: http://www.preventcancer.com/losing/acs/rejects_regulation. | Stacy Malkan See book keywords and concepts | Scientific studies have increasingly demonstrated that toxic chemicals are contributing to childhood cancer, hormone-related cancers, asthma, learning disabilities, birth defects, infertility and other health problems that have been increasing in recent decades.13 mimic hormones in the body, acting like keys that turn receptor-mediated hormone functions on or off, thereby jamming up the message network. Such disruptions, the book reported, could profoundly impact intelligence, fertility and immune system functions — especially when exposures occurred during sensitive times of fetal development. | Mike Adams See book keywords and concepts | There is substantial evidence on the risks of childhood cancer from the consumption of meats containing nitrites. (11,12,13) In 1982, Preston-Martin, etal. found that consumption during pregnancy of meats cured with sodium nitrite has been associated with development of brain tumors in the offspring. (14)
Recent case-control studies have confirmed the risks of cancer from consumption of hot dogs. Eating many hot dogs by children, as well maternal hot dog consumption during pregnancy, has been shown to be associated with brain cancer and leukemia in children. (15,16,17)
Bunin, et al. | Greg Critser See book keywords and concepts | By 2003 big pharma was spending upwards of S3 billion a year on DTC, almost all of it, it might be noted, on drugs for chronic diseases and not on acute conditions like childhood cancer. Pfizer alone spent more than half a billion. DTC became the province of Madison Avenue's most powerful ad agencies and, of course, their Wiley Rein broadcaster clients — the publicly licensed theater of the new DTC world — sans, of course, any troublingly patronizing brief summaries that might confuse the poor patient.
With the money came the so-called creative influence. | Mike Adams See book keywords and concepts | Agency Action Requested
This petition requests that FDA take the following action:
Immediately require nitrite-containing hot dogs to be labelled with warnings such as hot dogs containing nitrites have been shown to pose risks of childhood cancer. Pursuant to 21 CFR 10.30 (h) (2), a hearing at which time we can present our scientific evidence.
B. STATEMENT OF GROUNDS
Nitrites are widely used as preservatives in hot dogs, besides other meat products. Nitrites combine with amines naturally present in meat to form carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds. | | Here's the full petition:
Citizen Petition Seeking Labeling of Nitrate-Preserved Hot Dogs for childhood cancer Risk
April 25, 1995

Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration, Room 1-23 12420 Parklawn Drive Rockville, MD 20857
The undersigned submits on behalf of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, Inc. (CPC), Samuel S. Epstein, M.D., Chair, and on behalf of the Center for Constitutional Rights, Michael Deutsch, Esq., Legal Director. | | Sodium nitrite consumption has been linked with a frightening number of cancers, as described in this statement taken from the Citizen Petition Seeking Labeling of Nitrate-Preserved Hot Dogs for childhood cancer Risk
(reprinted below):
"Nitrites are widely used as preservatives in hot dogs, besides other meat products. Nitrites combine with amines naturally present in meat to form carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds. N-nitrosodimethylamine has been identified in nitrite-preserved meat products. | | Sarusua and Savitz studied 234 childhood cancer cases in Denver and found a strong association between the consumption of hot dogs and brain cancer. Children born to mothers who consumed hot dogs one or more times per week during pregnancy had approximately double the risk of developing brain tumors. Children who ate hot dogs one or more times per week were also at higher risk of brain cancer. In addition, children who ate hot dogs and took no vitamins, which retard the formation of N-nitroso carcinogens, were more strongly associated with both acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and brain cancer. | | Cured and broiled meat consumption in relation to childhood cancer."

In response to this petition, the FDA had absolutely nothing to say. No discussion, no new labeling requirement, not even a public hearing. The issue was simply swept under the rug.
Those who know how the FDA operates are not at all surprised by this action. | Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton See book keywords and concepts | Indeed, since mothers who take nutrients during pregnancy lower their child's risk of developing childhood cancer as well as a large number of other diseases, it is never too early to start.
The program has been written for adults, however it can be adapted for children. Using supplements designed for children, follow dosing guidelines on the side of the supplement packet to get the appropriate level of nutrients for your child.
Diet
We are what we eat. This is particularly true for children. | John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton See book keywords and concepts | The extent to which mortality rates can obscure trends in the incidence of cancer is clearly and tragically demonstrated by childhood cancer statistics," states author David Steinman. According to the National Cancer Institute, deaths from childhood cancers decreased between 1973 and
1987. Yet between 1950 and 1988, the incidence of childhood cancers among whites increased 21.3 percent. | Phyllis A. Balch, CNC See book keywords and concepts | Seventy-nine percent of childhood cancer survivors are living five years after diagnosis, and nearly 75 percent are alive ten years following diagnosis.
Just as each of us looks different, each of our bodies has its own unique composition. What some of us react well to may cause an adverse reaction in others, which is why some treatments prove to be successful for some, but not for others. This is why dietary wellness and prevention are so important. If we can keep our bodies healthy and avoid known cancer-causing agents, we have a good defense against ever getting cancer in the first place. | Kelly Patricia O'Meara See book keywords and concepts | Ritalin s cancer risk are more acute in view of the millions of children treated annually with the drug and the escalating incidence of childhood cancer, by some 35 percent over the last few decades, quite apart from delayed risks of cancer in adult life. There is no justification for prescribing Ritalin, even by highly qualified pediatricians and psychiatrists, unless parents have been explicitly informed of the drug's cancer risks. Otherwise, prescribing Ritalin constitutes unarguable medical malpractice. | John Robbins See book keywords and concepts | Although patients who were given chemotherapy suffered tremendously, extended remissions were achieved for some forms of childhood cancer, most notably acute lymphocytic leukemia, as well as for some cancers, such as Hodgkin's disease, that struck primarily adolescents. It became possible to cure a number of childhood cancers that had previously been fatal. Further, chemotherapy contributed to the successful treatment of other rare kinds of cancer, such as Burkitt's lymphoma, choriocarcinoma, lymphosarcoma, Wilms' tumor, and Ewing's sarcoma. | Larry Trivieri, Jr. See book keywords and concepts | An area of northwestern Suffolk County with the highest Sr-90 concentration has a disproportionately large number of rare childhood cancer cases.
These statistics clearly indicate that nuclear reactors are a direct cause of increased childhood cancer. How could the nuclear power industry design, and the government allow to be built, facilities that create such drastic health problems? The answer lies partially in the fact that the effects of low-level radiation were not known in the late 1950s at the beginning of the nuclear power industry. | Sandra Steingraber See book keywords and concepts | Several studies have linked childhood cancer to home pesticide use. childhood cancer in Los Angeles was found to be associated with parental exposure to pesticides during pregnancy or nursing. In a 1995 study in Denver, children whose yards were treated with pesticides were four times more likely to have soft tissue cancers than children living in households that did not use yard chemicals. | Arthur C. Upton, M.D. See book keywords and concepts | | However, the researcher who conducted the study did not find a correlation between childhood cancer and direct indoor measurements of electric and magnetic fields.
A more clear-cut correlation of childhood cancer with exposure was suggested, however, by a study of Swedish children reported in 1992. | John Robbins See book keywords and concepts | Although patients suffered tremendously, extended remissions were achieved for some forms of childhood cancer, most notably acute lymphocytic leukemia, as well as for cancers that primarily struck adolescents, such as Hodgkin's disease. The researchers studied 344 deaths from childhood cancer between 1950 and 1973- The address of each of the victims was paired with the address of the next baby born in the area, to provide a matched series of controls. If the family had moved before the death, both birth and death addresses were used in the experimental group. The wiring of each house and its distance from the nearest transformers were studied. | Patrick Quillin, PhD,RD,CNS See book keywords and concepts | On the other side of the coin, progress in pediatric oncology has produced cure rates in some forms of childhood cancer of up to 90%, which makes chemotherapy for childhood cancers an NCI victory, of sorts. However, while these patients do survive longer, they have a much higher risk for developing bone cancer later in life as a result of the chemo and/or radiation therapy.6
Not that money should be a top priority when health and life are at stake, but our health costs are out of control. We spend about $1. | Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele See book keywords and concepts | Mason Mcllnay was just completing kindergarten in Salem, Oregon, when doctors discovered that he had neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer that already had spread to his bone marrow. He had been troubled by pain at night, and at first his doctor thought he might have just pulled a muscle. A CT scan turned up the cancer. Over the next two months, Mason would be in and out of the hospital for surgery, chemotherapy, and treatment of infections and side effects, as he battled a famously virulent cancer. His medical expenses ran into the tens of thousands of dollars. | Nicola Reavley See book keywords and concepts | Some studies suggest links between vitamin K injections and an increased risk of childhood cancer.
Interactions
X-rays, aspirin, mineral oil, cholestyramine and anticonvulsant drugs, such as phenytoin, can raise vitamin K requirements. Long-term use of antibiotics can produce vitamin K deficiency.
Therapeutic uses of supplements
Vitamin K supplements are used to prevent hemorrhages and may also be useful in the treatment of osteoporosis.
Cautions
Vitamin K can interfere with the action of anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin.
Vitamin K was discovered in 1929. | | Some research suggests a link between neonatal vitamin K injections and childhood cancer (See below).
Therapeutic uses of supplements
Prevention of hemorrhage
Vitamin K injections may be given to patients before or after surgery to prevent hemorrhage. The injections may be also be used to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding in those with liver disease, jaundice, malabsorption problems or who are taking aspirin or antibiotics.
Hemorrhagic disease of the newborn
Newborn babies are often given a vitamin K injection soon after birth. | | The researchers are quoted as saying that "it is unlikely that there is a greatly increased risk of childhood cancer attributable to intramuscular vitamin K given to newborns, if indeed there is any." However, in another study the same researchers drew the conclusion that "the risk..... cannot be large, but the possibility that there is some risk cannot be excluded."5
The results of the fourth study by researchers in the north of England indicate that there may be some risk.6 This study involved 685 children who developed cancer before age 15 and 3442 controls. | Bernie S. Siegel, M.D. See book keywords and concepts | One of the arguments of those who discount mental factors in cancer has been the notion that the latency period is too long for the mind to play a role in childhood cancer, but there is now evidence to the contrary. A study at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx found that children with cancer had had twice as many recent crises as other children matched to be similar except for their disease. Another study showed that 31 of 33 children with leukemia had experienced a traumatic loss or move within the two years before their diagnosis. | Michael Lerner See book keywords and concepts | Candlelighters childhood cancer Foundation 7910 Woodmont Ave. Suite 460
