Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | Mike: I do know that people can mostly go to health food stores and food co-ops right now and find chia seeds. Can you talk about the nutritional content now, in terms of macronutrients, of the chia seed?
Ayerza: Okay, we've talked about the omega-3 up to now – that came from 34 percent of oil, of which 64 percent is omega-3. But in addition to that, it's very rich in protein; it's got 21 percent protein, which is very high for an oil crop, and this protein is very high in important amino acids. | | Are you seeing more and more interest in chia seeds?
Ayerza: Oh yes. In the conference, there was an amazing quantity of people interested in that. And in this conference you can see how many people are coming, but it's not just from the USA; it's from Europe and, of course, from Mexico. They say, "I know that." Of course, this is originally from Mexico. And you're discussing it, but you need to come back – and the book will help a lot, I think – because it's a forgotten crop of the Aztecs. | | Ayerza: Well, chia seeds are very important right now because there is a problem in the world with food that has no omega-3 at all. That produces an imbalance that increases the risk of heart attacks. People are starting to find sources of omega-3, and of course fish is one, but many people have allergies to the omega-3 from fish, and other people don't like fish. Another source is flax, but flax has some nutrient problems. Then, chia becomes one of the few sources with omega-3. | | Ayerza: They can sell what you want, but they don't sell in small quantities. For small quantities, you need to contact Dr. Wayne Coates. Dr. Wayne Coates can tell you where you can find it. I don't know really where you can find it in Tucson or in Phoenix or in other places, but Dr. Wayne Coates can tell you; he knows the addresses and the web pages of other companies that sell in small quantities. [Ed. Note: the address is www.EatChia.com]
Mike: I do know that people can mostly go to health food stores and food co-ops right now and find chia seeds. | | I like to sprinkle it on oatmeal, I put it in cereals and sometimes I just eat them raw, but what else can people do with chia seeds?
Ayerza: At www.eatchia.com, you will find a number of recipes. But I can tell you something very easy. It depends on the person, but, for example, my father loves chia, and he eats it with yogurt. He puts two spoonfuls in the yogurt, shakes the yogurt and eats it. In my case I prefer it with lemonade or with orange juice in the morning. I love orange juice, and I put it into the orange juice and eat it wit the beverage. My wife uses it over a salad. | | And now the Western world is rediscovering the ancient treasures of South America, whether it's chia seeds from Mexico, or -- as I was discussing with another person – quinoa from Bolivia and Ecuador.
Ayerza: That's right. Right now the University of Arizona is working with an Argentinean publisher that is going to publish in Spanish – not just for Argentina, but for Spain and other countries. Also, at this moment, the translation has already been started into French for a Belgian publisher and into one of the Chinese languages to be published next year.
Mike: Wonderful. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | Chia seeds - You've heard me rave about chia seeds in the past. Finally, here's a great source for buying them. Shipping is very reasonable from GoodCauseWellness. Sprinkle chia seeds into smoothies or practically any recipe (pancakes, for example) and you'll boost your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and other chia seed nutrients.
Also be sure to check out GCW's Nopal powder (made from cactus) for controlling blood sugar and cholesterol, and their grape seed extract which, in my opinion, is one of nature's most powerful medicines for heart health. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | It has chia seeds in it, too. Again, it was to get some essential fatty acids, and to get, as you know, the fiber from chia seeds, which is a truly wonderful fiber, plus antioxidants, and just a little extra protein. Part of it is, if you put superfoods together in a nice combination, they are each going to contribute in their own way. There is no single thing that does everything.
I think chlorella is as close, in my book, as any single superfood comes to doing it all. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | For example, people could pay in chia seeds. They could just fill up their pockets with chia seeds, drive down to the local post office and pay their taxes with this ancient Incan superfood. (The Incas ate chia seeds as "warrior food" because it gave them such great energy that they seemed altogether invincible... that is, until the Spaniards arrived and destroyed the chia-chewing Incas. Which is why modern Peruvians speak Spanish, if you can believe that...)
There are also other forms of healthy oils. What about cod liver oil or salmon oil? What if we all paid tax in salmon? | Andreas Moritz See book keywords and concepts | It can be found by searching "chia seeds" on the Internet. I have provided one inexpensive source for chia seeds under Product Information.
Fresh Corn Can Help Reverse Vision Problems
Almost every person with age-related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness, suffers from lutein-deficiency. A recent study showed that consuming 6 mgs of lutein in your food per day reduces your risk of this disorder by a whopping 43 percent. Fresh corn is an excellent source of lutein.
Rice
This common food has anti-diarrheal and anti-cancer properties. | Gabriel Cousens See book keywords and concepts | For the purposes of maintaining proper blood sugar as a diabetic or former diabetic, this means using super-low-glycemic chia seeds with your greens, in conjunction with sweet spices such as cardamom and stevia. On the Phase 1.5 cuisine, a low-glycemic fruit such as blueberries can be added in limited quantities. The way to make a blended green smoothie with chia is to add 1 cup of chia seeds to a blender of greens, add water to desired consistency, and blend a smoothie. For great smoothie recipes, see the Rainbow Green World Cuisine recipe section later in this chapter. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | Omega-3 oils / chia seeds - available from GoodCauseWellness.com
Rainforest herbs - There are many anti-cancer rainforest herbs, including graviola and Cat's Claw (Una de Gato). Recommended sources is Terry Pezzi of the high-integrity Amazon Herb Company (also helping to preserve the Amazon rainforest) - Another great source of rainforest herbs is Rain Tree with Leslie Taylor
Juice detoxification - Read books by Dr. Gabriel Cousens or visit his retreat in Southern Arizona

GCW was founded by Alan Friedman, who also carries several other fascinating products such as Incan berries, chia seeds, superfood powder, nopal cactus powder (for blood sugar balance), and now cacao nibs. (Check his site for details. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | Eat more chia seeds (www.GoodCauseWellness.com), avocados, raw coconut oil (www.RawFoods.com) and minimally processed plant-based oils. Fish oils can also be supportive if you choose to eat fish-derived products. Flax seeds serve a similar purpose for those who are vegetarian.
Berries: Eat massive quantities of fresh, raw berries to boost nervous system function and greatly enhance the power of your intention. Berries offer nervous system protection medicines, and they also happen to halt cancer, prevent eye disease, enhance memory and prevent Alzheimer's disease. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | Good sources of omega-3 oils include chia seeds, flax seeds and, for non-vegetarians, wild-harvested fish oils. A reputable supplier of fish oils is Nordic Naturals (www.NordicNaturals.com)
Selenium: Selenium is an antioxidant mineral responsible for tissue elasticity. It also acts to prevent cell damage by free radicals and is will known to be correlated with a reduction of breast cancer risk. It may play an important role in preventing skin cancer, as it can protect the skin from damage from excessive ultraviolet light. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | Again, it was to get some essential fatty acids, and to get, as you know, the fiber from chia seeds, which is a truly wonderful fiber, plus antioxidants, and just a little extra protein. FOUR: JUICING YOUR GREENS
Green vegetable juice was covered in the Chapter 5 introduction to Juice Feasting. It is easy to juice a pound of leafy greens into a quart of juice, combined with celery, cucumber, lemon, Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, ginger, cayenne, curcumin, and many other low-glycemic delicious juiced ingredients. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | They could just fill up their pockets with chia seeds, drive down to the local post office and pay their taxes with this ancient Incan superfood. Culinary Uses
Chia seeds by themselves taste much like wheat germ. Both varieties of chia seeds are hard and smooth as long as they are dry, but when placed in warm water, or any liquid for that matter, they rapidly begin to soften and swell, increasing their original size by four or five times. | Gabriel Cousens See book keywords and concepts | These desert plants used to capture and store life-giving water, are the same agent that makes beans, mesquite, plan-tago, belotas, chia seeds, nopalitos, and prickly pear fruit effective regulators of blood sugar. Because of their interface with Western culture and diet, and certain shifts that limited their access to anti-diabetogenic foods, they shifted to a high-refined-sugar and cooked-animal-fat diet.
Most foods high on the glycemic and insulin indexes greatly accelerate the metabolic imbalance. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | We may also put in nutritional yeast, and other factors like chia seeds, vitamins, and minerals, depending on the day.
We love conjugated linoleic acid. We think CLA is wonderful. The big dog gets the CLA to build the muscles, and because she is old and she has trouble making it around. We are trying to build strength so she can continue to function.

Unlike vitamins, minerals cannot be synthesized by plants. Plants take up mineral salts (inorganic compounds) from the soil and convert them into colloidal minerals (organic compounds).
