We need to know the difference between treating symptoms and working to restore health by addressing the causes of disease.
When we closely examine our behavior and reactions to being sick, we realize that we give very little thought to how we can stay healthy. For the most part, we take our health for granted until it is almost gone. Unfortunately, we have also come to expect disease as a natural part of growing older. But we do not understand why young people become seriously ill. Somehow that doesn't seem right. |

All of these reduce T-cell activation by thymus hormones and leave the body without sufficient defenses against the spreading of cancer cells and other causes of disease.
The thymus gland shrinks when it is exposed to stress. It is well known that following a serious injury, surgery or sudden illness, millions of white blood cells are destroyed, and the thymus gland shrivels to as little as half of its normal size. Looking at video footage of Adolf Hitler, a child abuser or a wanted terrorist may be enough to stress your thymus gland significantly. |
| Symptoms of Disease are Like Sand in the Hand
Symptoms of disease are highly changeable, if not unpredictable. The causes of disease remain obscure to most medical practitioners and their patients. A stomach catarrh, or inflammation of the mucous membrane, for example, may initially show up as an irritation and then become an ulcer. Next it may be perceived as a hardening of tissue and, eventually, be diagnosed as cancer. The course and intensification of pathological symptoms (signs of disease) may vary from person to person, and relatively few people develop the cancer stage. |
| One of the primary causes of disease is chronic cellular dehydration, a condition which leaves the body's cells in a perpetual state of weakness and defense. Ionized water is up to six times more hydrating than conventional water. In other words, by drinking less or the same amount of water but in ionized form, you will actually hydrate your cells much more effectively. (The hot ionized water described earlier is used to remove toxins from the tissues and therefore rarely hydrates cells directly. However, once the toxins are removed, the cells become more efficiently hydrated than before). |

| People may have a shopping list of symptoms, but doctors are not finding and certainly not treating the root causes of disease! Most symptoms will disappear after a successful program of internal cleansing.
You can give people the finest quality, wildcrafted, super-organic health supplements in the world until you are blue in the face, but you are still not addressing the core of their problem. Toxic overload results from a lack of internal cleansing!
What people do not realize is they need to cleanse their intestines on a regular basis as part of an ongoing health routine. |
| I have spent years tracing the root causes of disease. Although everyone talks about toxic overload, no one is focusing on the real problem— where that overload takes place.
What Happens When You Have a Toxic Intestine, Colon, or Liver?
I mention the liver at this point because, after years of toxic buildup, the liver takes quite a beating and must be cleansed regularly just like your skin, house, or car. However, the intestinal tract is the first line of defense in the body. |

No matter what symptoms you present at the doctor's office, the naturopathic physician will investigate the root causes of disease: your exposure to toxic chemicals, your levels of chronic stress and the health of your relationships, your level of physical exercise, and your exposure to sunlight, fresh air and fresh water, among other factors. These are simple causative factors, but when they are out of balance, deficient, or present in excess, they combine to create all the different biochemical problems that conventional medicine labels as disease. |

But in 2007, I found the exhibit to offer an outdated focus on the physical nature of all disease (and a complete lack of explanation for any other causes of disease).
On the bright side, the exhibit did make perfectly clear the health ramifications of smoking cigarettes. Actual human lungs were on display, all charcoal-colored and covered in tumors. It's not difficult to understand what smoking does to a set of human lungs when you're staring at them right in front of your nose. |

True healthcare works to correct the causes of disease. And, although the present allopathic system is often referred to as "traditional medicine," it is not. True traditional medicine is healthcare that uses natural methods, foods, and herbs, and has been practiced since the beginning of civilization. Today's medical system, which is barely a century old, attempts to treat disease with chemicals, surgery, and radiation technologies. It is not health care. It is disease care.

As is so often the case, the purely symptom-oriented medical theories fall short in explaining the causes of disease. In fact, they are likely to make you ill. Beware of any advice given to you by any doctor, company, or organization who wants to protect you against a supposed threat while at the same time trying to sell you something else, such as sunscreen lotions.

Now that we have looked at the general causes of disease, let's examine the specifics. What could we be doing wrong that is causing us to develop diseases, or at least become less healthy than we could and should be? In the next chapter we'll read about two studies that gave us answers many years ago. We'll also examine what has changed in disease statistics, food production, food consumption, and the environment since 1900.

Fact #3: No pharmaceuticals actually cure or resolve the underlying causes of disease. Even "successful" drugs only manage symptoms, usually at the cost of interfering with other physiological functions that will cause side effects down the road. There is no such thing as a drug without a side effect.
Fact #4: There is no financial incentive for anyone in today's system of medicine (drug companies, hospitals, doctors, etc.) to actually make patients well. Profits are found in continued sickness, not wellness or prevention. |

But a visit to a good diagnostician can certainly rule out obvious organic causes of disease.
Supplementing a diagnosis by a licensed professional is the possibility of an assessment. An assessment is done by a healer; rather than aiming to identify a disease, it targets an area of energy blockage. The site of the blockage may be far from the site of symptoms, and precede any symptoms at all. Daniel Benor, M.D. |

If we allow ourselves to get stuck examining only the physical level, and we assign all causes of disease or health to the physical structure of the body, we'll never get to the really powerful wisdom found in the emotional and energetic realms of human experience.

The mainstream media is incapable of accurate scientific reporting on the nutritional causes of disease.
3. Both mainstream journalists and medical researchers remain nutritionally ignorant.
4. The public is being routinely misled by the mainstream media on health issues.

It does not treat the basic causes of disease, the reasons why health begins to degenerate in the first place.
The "chasing the disease" approach simply doesn't work in the long run because it can't! If you don't address the cause of a problem, it will just surface again later. It may arise in a different form, or it may come back in the same form but be much more serious.
When natural laws of caring for the body are ignored, aging and deterioration take place in a manner that, sooner or later, results in serious loss of quality of life. |

Stories about the genetic causes of disease, for example, are designed to strip away your power and get you to believe that you have no control over your own health. Stories about the dangers of nutritional supplements are designed to convince you to fear nutrition and trust only in pharmaceuticals. Stories about oral sex, as we've seen here, are designed to rally the nation into a state of irrational fear out of which they will react by calling for mandatory vaccinations of teenage boys.

So while a dieter on a high-protein diet is increasing his intake of saturated fat which has been linked to a range of health problems, he is also reducing his intake of high-quality whole foods like healthy carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables which are rich in the very nutrients that have been associated with reducing risks to the most common chronic causes of disease and death.
To step back for a moment, there's no question that evidence points to some association between high-protein foods and weight loss. |

Although the name "dropsy" didn't disappear from medical textbooks overnight, eventually laboratory tests were developed to pinpoint the actual causes of disease in different organs. Blood tests identified kidney and liver disease, and X-rays heart disease. Patients with sick hearts that could not pump adequately often had swelling of the legs and complained of shortness of breath when they walked. What had once been labeled "dropsy" could now be attributed to congestive heart failure or some other specific disease. So dropsy became a quaint term from yesteryear. |
| It's frustrating, for a doctor as well as for a patient, when the underlying causes of disease remain a mystery. But at least my patient can take heart that this battery of tests has ruled out a large number of illnesses, some relatively minor and some potentially very serious.
Unfortunately, many doctors are uncomfortable with medical complaints that can't be backed up by abnormal test results.
When out of their comfort zone they may leap to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong. |

In the conventional biological paradigm, the causes of disease are almost always limited to biological and genetic processes and environmental factors such as toxins and infectious agents.
In terms of public health, with the exception of the negative health effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun and radon gas from the earth, there is little scientific agreement about the health effects of energy fields, natural or man-made. Debate rages about the effects of the loss of the ozone layer and the output from high-power electrical transmission lines on health. |

These polio genetic researchers were merely echoing the earlier teachings of eugenicist Charles Davenport, who, using syphilitic paresis, delirium tremens, and tuberculosis as examples, wrote in 1911 that, "in general, the causes of disease as given in the pathologies are not the real causes. They are due to inciting conditions acting on a susceptible protoplasm. The real cause of death of any person is his inability to cope with the disease germ, or other untoward conditions [emphasis added] . |

The answer requires an understanding of a much more advanced framework for health and the underlying causes of disease. Fundamentally, these diseases are fictitious in the sense that they are not caused by invading microbes -- thus, they are not diseases in the way we typically think of infectious disease like smallpox, malaria or influenza.
Rather than being such types of diseases, our most common so-called 'diseases' like cancer, diabetes and heart disease are actually metabolic disorders. |

Research on the causes of disease and non-drug interventions simply doesn't occur in medical education settings. For example, academic researchers may be furiously trying to find a pill that will treat the symptoms of obesity, but not be devoting any time or money to teaching people how to live a healthier life. Dr. Angell writes15:
In terms of education, medical students and house officers, under the constant tutelage of industry representatives, learn to rely on drugs and devices more than they probably should [my emphasis]. |
