Cigarette smoke is the most potent carcinogen to which many of us are exposed. Though nicotine is terribly addictive, we must struggle to rid the body of it and all the carcinogens contained in cigarette smoke. Smokers show a tremendous increase in the number of free radicals in their bodies.' And though to a lesser extent, secondary smoke is also an important factor in oxidative stress.10

INDICATIONS AND USAGE
At present, it is used only in Chinese medicine and in very small doses as a remedy for gallbladder colic, obstruction of the bowels and malaria.
PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS
The phorbol esters of the oils are severe cocarcinogenics. Therapeutic uses as well as skin or mucous membrane contacts with the drug are to be strictly avoided. The drug possesses acute toxicity. When applied to the skin, it brings about itching, burning, and after a time blisters. |

What most of us may not realize is that exposure to several so-called weak carcinogens may be more dangerous than exposure to one very strong carcinogen.
For example, let's say that each day you eat bacon or luncheon meats preserved and colored with sodium nitrite, a possible carcinogenic agent. And you also have several cups of coffee throughout the day, all sweetened with an artificial sweetener containing saccharin, another known carcinogen. At the same time, you are taking a prescription drug twice daily that is on the government's list of "suspected" carcinogens. |

| The more of a carcinogen present in the human environment, hence the greater the exposure to it, the greater is the chance of developing cancer from it.
3. Although environmental carcinogens are the predominant causes of human cancer, the incidence of cancer in any population of animals or humans exposed to a carcinogen may be influenced by a variety of factors.
4. There is no known method for measuring or predicting a "safe" level of exposure to any carcinogen below which cancer will not result in an individual or population group.3

Propylene oxide is a genotoxic chemical and is listed as a possible carcinogen by the International Agency on Cancer Research. In lab experiments, the chemical leads to gene mutation, DNA strand breaks, and neoplastic cell transformation. It is listed as a "possible" carcinogen because no long-term studies have been done with humans. Its use for treating food for human consumption is banned in the European Union, Canada, Mexico, and most other countries. |

Now we know: the chemical poisons that run through rivers, fish and polar bears are running through the umbilical cord to our children. The carcinogen in the baby shampoo can't be separated from the carcinogens in the food and the air, just as the polluting chemical plants aren't separate from the leaching trash dumps at the end of the line; they aren't separate from the skyrocketing asthma rates or the chemo parties in the brand-new children's cancer ward.
The story of chemistry also brings us to the threshold of new possibilities. |

There is quite consistent epidemiologic evidence that alcohol consumption is associated with a moderate increase in breast cancer risk [42]. While there are several possible mechanisms to explain these observations, there is also some evidence that the mechanism of this association involves gene-environment interactions in carcinogen metabolism. |

They do this by reducing their poisonous effects and stimulating the release of "carcinogen killers," speeding up their removal from the body. Studies have shown that isothiocyanates help prevent lung and esophageal cancer and can lower the risk of other cancers, including gastrointestinal cancer. Several isothiocyanates have been shown to inhibit tumors induced by chemical carcinogens. Broccoli in particular contains a potent isothio-cyanate that is an inhibitor of mammary tumors.

Chemoprotective Effects: Biochanin A, a major active compound isolated from Red Clover extract, inhibited carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene activation in cell cultures. Chemoprotective action is attributed to the ability of biochanin A to inhibit the metabolism of the carcinogen and the extent of its binding to DNA (Cassady et al, 1988).
Estrogenic Effects: Red Clover extract stimulated cell proliferation of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells in vitro. Red Clover extract acts as an estrogen agonist by binding to intracellular estradiol receptors. |

Cancer researchers have concluded that the cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver "potentiate" NNK by oxidizing it, making it an activated carcinogen. The fact that lung cancer mortality rates are lower in Japan than in the United States, even though Japanese men are twice as likely to smoke as American men, is consistent with the view that lifestyle factors or diet inhibit the activation of tobacco carcinogens.
Experiments on animals indicate that the polyphenols in green tea ameliorate the damage caused by NNK. When mice are treated with NNK they develop an average of 22. |

In 1989, the EPA declared a ban on what amounted to more than 90 percent of all uses of asbestos, which it classified as a "known carcinogen." But industry challenged the agency and in 1991 a federal court vacated the ban, asserting that the EPA had not met TSCA's requirements for proof of harm balanced against the benefits of asbestos, and had not demonstrated that the ban was the "least burdensome alternative" for eliminating the "unreasonable risk" of exposure to the carcinogenic substance. |

| Regrettably, coal tar is a controversial ingredient for dandruff control because there is evidence that in large concentrations it can be a carcinogen, particularly for causing skin, lung, and scrotum cancer. However, there is no research showing that the use of coal tar in dandruff shampoos has this effect. The research showing coal tar to be a possible carcinogen was from studies carried out in industrial settings where workers were exposed to concentrated solutions over long periods of time (20 to 25 years) and from studies on animals. |

Curcumin has been found to inhibit carcinogens, such as benzopyrene (the carcinogen found in charcoal-broiled meat), from inducing cancer in several animal studies. It appears that the curcumin exerts its anticarcinogenic activity by lowering the activation of carcinogens while increasing the detoxification of those that are activated. Curcumin has also been shown to directly inhibit the growth of cancer cells.37

It is either acting as a co-carcinogen or a primary carcinogen. Most likely, it's the formaldehyde breakdown product.
What the Italian study found is that if you take these same animals and expose them to formaldehyde in the same doses, they developed the same leukemias and lymphomas. If you look back at the Troker Study conducted in Spain a couple of years ago, what they found was when they radiolabeled the aspartame, they could actually see formaldehyde binding to the DNA, and it produced both single and double strand DNA breakage. |

N-nitrosodimethylamine has been identified by IARC (1978) and NTP (1994) as an animal carcinogen. There is sufficient evidence to indicate the carcinogenicity of N-nitrosodimethylamine in several experimental animal species (IARC 1978). When administered orally, it induced liver hemangiosarcomas, hepatocellular carcinomas, and kidney and lung tumors in mice (Takayama and Oota 1963, 1965; Terracini et al. 1966; Toth etal. 1964; Clapp etal. 1968, 1971; Den Engelse etal. |

N-nitrosodimethylamine is a derived naturally occurring carcinogen present in a variety of foods, including cheese, soybean oil, canned fruit, various meat products and cured meats, bacon, frankfurters, ham (cooked), fish and fish products, apple brandy, other alcoholic beverages, and beer. Concentrations in these foodstuffs have been measured to be between 0 and 85 ng/kg. Levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine in various foods from several countries, including the United States, have been reported by IARC (1978). |
