During conventional cancer treatment with toxic chemotherapy drugs, for example, the patients are told they are getting help. They're told they are getting better. The American Medical Association, the FDA, and all the authorities in medicine tell them they are receiving a scientifically-validated form of treatment.
What they are not being told is the chemotherapy is destroying the normal, healthy functioning of vital organs, such as the liver, heart, brain, and kidneys. |
| If you are currently in a situation and are weighing conventional cancer treatment versus alternative treatment, realize that conventional cancer docs often trap patients through the use of false authority. They have all the symbols lined up: the doctors with their medical school diplomas, the FDA, and the drug companies with all kinds of exaggerated advertising that claims you can live a better life as long as you keep paying them money and drowning your body in synthetic chemicals. |
| Yes, it might also be shrinking a tumor, but the point here is not simply to emerge from cancer treatment with only small tumors. The point is to emerge as a healthy human being with a strong immune system and cellular balance that prevents or eliminates tumors altogether. That kind of outcome is not at all offered by conventional medicine. |

Over twenty-five years ago, the National Cancer Institute claimed laetrile was an ineffective cancer treatment, yet many who seek alternative cancer treatments travel to Mexico, where laetrile remains available. In the seventeenth century, apricot oil was said to be used in England to cure ulcers. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Titania lauded apricot's aphrodisiac properties.
Throw Me a Lifesaver! vision: Rich in vitamin A, a powerful antioxidant that prevents free radical damage to eye tissue, apricots may help to promote good vision. |

This therapy uses adaptogenic and tonic herbs to help prevent many of the side effects of cancer treatment, including decreased red and white blood cell counts, nausea, fatigue, and immune system suppression. Not only do the fu zheng formulas help prevent or relieve such problems but they also enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Cancer survival rates increase for patients receiving fu-zheng therapy as an adjunct to Western cancer treatments (Pang Mingji 1992). |

Though data from thousands of studies support taking a less toxic, more holistic approach to treatment of the disease, the majority of allopathic specialists still hold little more than a patronizing view of patients who wish to use a nutrition-based, immune system enhancing strategy in their cancer treatment.
Vociferous and over-zealous protestation by oncologists, who are convinced that nutrition in cancer treatment is inherently worthless and tantamount to quackery, is embarrassing to the institution of medicine. |

They've also got control over the public message of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which focuses on early detection — in other words, find out if you've already got the disease. |

Aloe vera heals radiation burns from radiation cancer treatments
For those cancer treatment victims who have been maimed by radiotherapy treatments (which don't cure cancer, by the way: the treatments are largely a medical hoax), applying aloe vera topically to the radiation area will rapidly accelerate the healing response. Consuming aloe vera internally will also help heal radiation burns. Of course, it's smarter to avoid radiation in the first place, since the procedure actually causes cancer just like mammograms do. |

I am putting together a specific book on the various cancer treatment options. You can find all the current information for free at www.naturalcures.com. Every cancer is treated differently. Every cancer could have hundreds of very different causes. Therefore, virtually no two cancer treatment protocols would be exactly the same. Consider Poly-MVA, linseed oil, shark cartilage, hydrogen peroxide, ozone and oxygen therapy, Dr. Coldwell's stress-reducing CDs, and traditional Chinese medicine. |

Improvements in conventional cancer treatment since the 1980s, for example, might be masking the independent impact that group therapy really does have on the course of disease. In addition, since most educated cancer patients by now had heard that joining a support group was likely to improve their odds of survival, it was likely that, when they were randomized to the control group, some patients looked outside the study for other forms of social support and group therapy. |
| Buckman had heard about a spectacular cancer treatment while listening to a lecture given by Dr. Bernie Siegel, author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles. As the Times explained:
Dr. Siegel told of two oncologists chatting about a study they were participating in to test a combination of four chemotherapy drugs, which had the initials EPHO.
One doctor's patients were doing spectacularly well; three quarters of them were responding to the drugs. But only a quarter of the other doctor's patients were improving. |

Although it is not a cancer treatment, it has so many anti-cancer nutrients that it offers a healthy nutritional base for supporting the patient's natural healing process and overcoming cancer. (And despite what oncologists still mistakenly believe, antioxidants do not interfere with chemotherapy. They only protect healthy cells, not cancer cells.)

| Until recently, cancer treatment was limited to three options—surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation. Now: Cancer vaccines are a promising new treatment for virtually all types of malignancies.
To find out more, we spoke with Dr. Michael Morse, a medical oncologist and leading authority on cancer vaccines...
•Is the idea of cancer vaccines new? Not at all. In the 1700s, it was observed that people who had tumors occasionally improved after they experienced an infection. |
| Several recent studies highlight the latest breakthroughs in breast cancer treatment and prevention...
New finding: Standard treatments extend life even longer. Two standard medical treatments for breast cancer are chemotherapy (medicines that kill cancer cells) and hormonal therapy (medicines that stop estrogen from stimulating cancer cells to reproduce). |

After all, Herberman ran one of the nation's busiest cancer treatment centers. The more cases that walked in the door, the more profits the enterprise would make. But, he was no ordinary medical businessman. A trained scientist, Herberman had begun to ask why so many of the physicians he had trained with were developing cancer themselves.
Two years later, Dr. Herberman confided that his curiosity about the environment had not been merely academic. I learned that he and his brother, Harvey, had both developed chronic lymphocytic leukemia. |

Support for going outside the conventional system for cancer treatment comes from a growing number of remarkable quarters. There's nothing timid about Donna Karan. This is a woman who revolutionized fashion and kept her husband with advanced cancer alive far longer than anyone expected. She did this the way she does most things, with a focus and intensity that is breathtaking—tapping all the healing modalities you can name from aromatherapy to acupuncture, massage, chiropractic and more types of body work than most of us have ever heard of. |

There's pretty compelling evidence that using melatonin along with conventional cancer treatment like chemotherapy improves the tumor regression rate in breast, lung, kidney, liver, pancreatic, stomach, and colon cancer.
Melatonin plus chemo improved the one-year survival rate by approximately 50 percent compared to chemo alone in one study. Melatonin also seems to help reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy as well as some of the complications from it. |

Meanwhile, the various crises that attend cancer treatment were unfolding in my family's life.
One day Lilienfeld called me into his office.
"I have to tell you something I don't usually discuss with anybody." He motioned me inside and gestured for me to close the door. I sat down on a hard wooden chair and waited. His intense blue eyes signaled this was a serious conversation. "You have to talk to your father."
I was bewildered. He and I had never spoken about my frequent trips to my dad's sickbed. Lilienfeld was not exactly the warm and cuddly type. |
| Out of these horrors, some six decades later, information has emerged regarding the long-term consequences of some of these activities that remain relevant to the world of cancer treatment today.
By 1958 Gilbert Beebe, a researcher with the U.S. National Cancer Institute, had put together enough information on men who had survived poison gas attacks from World War I to report that forty years later, they had much greater chances of developing lung cancer.14 By the 1960s, several other reports confirmed that poison gas had done more than permanently impair or kill thousands in combat. |
| Some forty years later, this lady asked me not to use her name or mention the place where she worked because it was considered the best in the world for cancer treatment. It probably was.
The ACS launched an effort to promote the Pap smear in 1957, fifteen years after the test had been shown to save lives and nearly three decades after it was first developed. By that time, the Breslow history makes clear, the evidence in its favor had become overwhelming, at least in America. A number of clinics were reporting great success in finding and eliminating precancerous conditions. |

Some cancer patients find that a macrobiotic diet—which consists of cooked whole grains, vegetables, beans, seaweed, and small amounts of fish—is easier to stomach than a standard diet when undergoing cancer treatment. This may sound foreign to you, but when faced with the serious malnutrition that often accompanies cancer, you may find this a real boon, as others have. For more information, see Michio Kushi's books: The Cancer Prevention Diet (St. Martins Griffin, 1994) and The Macrobiotic Way (Avery, 2004).

Coming up with ways to study complex approaches to cancer treatment will tax the brains of Chalmers's counterparts today. But we cannot solve the problems of the future with the technologies that have created them, as Einstein once urged. We've got to go beyond our worn cultural capital to new ways of looking and thinking about treating cancer, as well as in our efforts to prevent it. |
