The concept of chemoprevention may help explain how green tea reduces cancer risks. Cancer chemoprevention is a means of controlling cancer, even in the face of cancer-causing agents, by increasing a person's exposure to certain cancer-fighting compounds. These chemo-preventive compounds are technically called anti-carcinogens; ideally, they should be nontoxic as well. Chemoprevention is different from cancer treatment, since chemoprevention's goal is to lower the incidence of cancer rather than to treat existing cancers. |

| After removing a multitude of "choices" from the diabetic marketplace, and herding the diabetic population into the aspartame corral, it has recently been stated by the FDA that saccharine poses no cancer risks. Unfortunately, those companies that produced saccharine-containing products have either melted into oblivion...or switched to the current panacea—pumping out aspartame in various consumable incarnations. Truth be told, the food police can't (or won't) tell you the truth so you can make informed decisions. |

Why have we made so little effort to control modern workplace causes of cancer or to evaluate possible new cancer risks?
The Breslows' report showed that the revolving door of industrial and government cancer experts had operated since the earliest efforts to deal with cancer nationwide. It also revealed that scientists in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Japan understood a great deal more about some of the major causes of cancer in the workplace decades before the United States, Sweden, England, France, Canada, or any other nation opted for an official war on the illness. |
| The risks of radiation, unlike many other cancer risks, are not based on theoretical models or experimental research with lab rats. The numbers we use to estimate the chances you will get cancer from radiation come from real people who survived the atomic bombings that

Will the public take folic acid pills to reduce cancer risks? Public health authorities have such a dim view of vitamin pills that they don't emphasize the importance of supplementing the diet. Folic acid has been fortified in foods, but only in moderate amounts, and it is subject to spoilage during processing and cooking. Furthermore, folic acid in foods is not nearly as well absorbed and bioavailable as folic acid from dietary supplements. [British Journal Nutrition 95:181-7, 2006]
Should everyone supplement with folic acid to prevent cancer? A large body of data indicates this. |

What would you rather watch or hear about: The call of the West with pounding hoof beats or a recitation of cancer risks? You've probably never heard of Wayne McClaren. McClaren was the horseback-riding, hard-smoking Marlboro cowboy in 1976—the year Gori was championing a safer smoke in major scientific publications. Before dying of lung cancer in 1992, McClaren became an antismoking activist. This poster, showing only what was left of him—his boots and hat—was prepared as a public service announcement against smoking, but didn't get the air or print coverage accorded earlier rides. |

Researchers studying cancer risks at the University of Manitoba looked at records for nearly 36,000 patients who had negative screenings for colon cancer between 1989 and 2003. They compared the incidence of colorectal cancer in this group with that in the provincial population. The research team found that the risk of developing colon cancer within less than 10 years of a negative colonoscopy was very low and remained lower beyond that time. In fact, at 10 years, the risk of developing colon cancer was 72% lower. |

It showed that vitamin D can cut cancer risks by as much as 60 percent. The study observed nearly 1,200 women, aged 55 and older, over the course of four years. The women were divided into two groups. One group was given supplemental calcium and vitamin D, the other group received a placebo. Those in the first group had a 60 percent lower risk for all cancers compared with those who were in the placebo group.
This previous study was further substantiated by research from Stanford University. |
| The study, which is being considered the most thorough analysis of farmed and wild salmon to-date, found in most cases that consuming more than one serving of farmed salmon per month could pose unacceptable cancer risks. These standards for determining safe fish consumption levels are according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Farmed salmon were found to have up to 10 times higher levels of PCBs and dioxins than wild salmon. Farmed salmon are frequently fed antibiotics, which contribute to the growth of drug-resistant bacteria. |

Reduce cancer risks. More than 40 studies looking at 20 types of cancer have suggested that regularly eating whole grains reduces the risk of many gastrointestinal cancers, such as stomach and colon, along with cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, and larynx. Whole grains may accomplish this by blocking DNA damage, suppressing the growth of cancer cells, providing antioxidant protection, and preventing the formation of carcinogens. |

Here's what we know about prostate cancer risks:
?Your risk increases with age.
?African American men are 65 percent more susceptible to prostate cancer than European American men.
?Americans are twice as likely to die from it.
?A nonsmoking man has a higher risk of having prostate cancer than the risk of having cancers of the lung, colon, rectum, mouth, bladder, lymph system, and kidney combined.
Lower vitamin D levels increase your risk of developing and dying from prostate cancer. |

During the 1940s, he wrote editorials for the Journal of the American Medical Association on the cancer risks of solar radiation, aromatic amines, estrogens, coal tar products, arsenic, asbestos and other environmental hazards. In 1948 he began work with the fledgling National Cancer Institute, heading its first environmental cancer section. At first this must have seemed kismet. The lack of knowledge about how DHEA supplementation might affect cancer risks provides a reason for caution. Until more is known, people with breast (page 65) or prostate cancer (page 371) or a family history of these conditions should avoid supplementing with DHEA.
Although anticancer effects of DHEA have also been reported,89 they involve trials using animals that do not process DHEA the way humans do. Therefore, these positive effects may have no relevance for people.
Some doctors recommend that people taking DHEA have liver enzymes measured routinely. |
| In the debate over whether dietary fat increases breast cancer risks, only one fact is indisputable: women in countries that consume high amounts of meat and daity fat have a high risk of breast cancer, while women in countries that mostly consume rice, soy, vegetables, and fish (instead of dairy fat and meat) have a low risk of breast cancer.66
The complex relationship between soy consumption and risk

Sugar
A preliminary study has reported an association between an increasing intake of sugar or sugar-containing foods and an increased risk of gallbladder cancer.66 Whether this association exists because sugar directly promotes cancer or because sugar consumption is only a marker for some other dietary or lifestyle factor remains unknown.
Salt
In preliminary research, increasing intake of salt correlates with increased risk of stomach cancer. |
| Finally, in the original report claiming that boron reduced loss of calcium,101 the effect was achieved by significantly increasing estrogen and testosterone levels, hormones that have been linked to cancer risks. Yet even after these cancer risks became widely acknowledged, because estrogen was believed to lower the risk of developing heart disease (and more women died of heart disease than endometrial cancer), the overall benefits were believed to outweigh the possible costs.5 Other benefits were also observed among long-time estrogen users. In addition to reducing the symptoms of menopause, they reportedly experienced less diabetes, less depression, less Alzheimer's disease and increased longevity. |

However, practitioners of this burgeoning "health" industry are either ignorant of or fail to warn of well-documented information on the grave cancer risks of HGH medication.
HGH medication should only be used by qualified endocrinologists for highly restricted medical disorders, such as dwarfism due to pituitary gland deficiency, as approved by the FDA in 1985. It should be further stressed that anti-aging medication has never received any such approval.
The public should also boycott unlabeled dairy products in favor of those labeled as rBGH-free, which are becoming increasingly available. |
