Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. See book keywords and concepts | Recognizing the reality that one in four of us will sometime need cancer treatment, and that the costs will not be adequately covered by conventional policies, the ever-responsive insurance industry is now offering cancer policies which you may want to investigate. About 60 percent of these policies are writ-
$ It is important to note that the "cancer surveillance programs" adopted by industry for lung or liver cancer most certainly do not offer prevention, but merely the earlier diagnosis of an inevitable death. | | The statement by the 60-plus scientists calls for urgent reforms in federal cancer policies. These reforms must ensure that the NCI gives greater emphasis to cancer prevention, rather than to chasing the elusive but ever-promised cure for cancer, coupled with continuing oversight to ensure compliance. These reforms demand drastic legislative action and strong grassroots support.
The Debate Continues
Subsequent to the February 4 press conference, The Washington Post printed a favorable report of the event by its medical correspondent, Dr. David Brown. | | McVie studiously avoided any reference to the "call for accountability," a call more than justified by the dominant role in national cancer policies of the indentured Richard Doll. Doll has trivialized the critical need for research and outreach on the avoidable causes of cancer (other than smoking), and has attempted to explain away the escalating incidence of cancer. McVie also made no reference to the failure, or minimal success, of conventional toxic chemotherapy to have improved survival rates for the overwhelming majority of common cancers over the last few decades. | | It also strikingly illustrates fundamental problems with federal cancer policies. The NCI suffers from a mindset myopically fixated on diagnosis, treatment and basic research, with relative indifference to cancer prevention.
Drastic reforms of NCI priorities and policies are essential to curbing the cancer epidemic, including escalating breast cancer rates. Only congressional action and strong support by women's and other concerned citizen groups can make this come about. | | However, the editorial misattributes criticisms of the cancer establishment, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and American Cancer Society (ACS), exclusively to me — as well as seriously misrepresenting such criticisms.
These criticisms were based on a statement released on Feb. 4 by 65 prominent authorities in cancer research, public health and preventive medicine, including former senior government scientists. |
