In an honest system of food safety regulation, wouldn't you think that cancer-causing chemicals would be banned? If our national leaders really want health care reform, they should outlaw known cancer-causing chemicals like sodium nitrite, sodium benzoate, artificial food colors, aspartame, monosodium glutamate and others.
After all, we're talking about health care costs here, right? How much financial sense does it make to allow food companies to poison the population, and then have to foot the bill for treating all the resulting diseases from that poison? |

No interest in reducing exposure to toxic chemicals
I find it interesting that the cancer industry and the big cancer non-profits still refuse to pursue preventing cancer by supporting the banning of cancer-causing chemicals. They choose to ignore the truth about cancer-causing chemicals in food, beverages, personal care products and in the workplace. They refuse to look at the chemical toxicities that are ever-present in the environment, and instead put their efforts into cancer treatment (because that's where the money is). |

Your average perfume product, for example, contains more than twenty cancer-causing chemicals, none of which are listed on the label. Once applied to your skin, they penetrate the dermis layer and go right to your bloodstream where your heart circulates them, maximizing their potential to cause damage to your tissues and organs.
In a sane country where health really mattered, these cancer-causing chemicals would be illegal to use in personal care products. |

Why are extremely toxic, cancer-causing chemicals openly allowed to be used in skin care products, perfumes and personal care formulas sold throughout America?
8) Why are popular laundry products still allowed to be sold in the U.S. when they contain numerous cancer-causing chemicals that get embedded in the fibers of clothing and are easily absorbed through the skin?
9) Why do U.S. health authorities not merely tolerate, but actually encourage the mass drugging of schoolchildren with amphetamine drugs? (Ritalin, Adderall, etc.)
The answer, of course, is: Blame China! |

In a controlled study involving forty-nine smokers, researchers at the University of Hawaii found that drinking three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day reduced the activity of a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 that is thought to activate cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. It's reasonable to think that might be helpful for nonsmokers as well, since reducing the activity of an enzyme that activates cancer-causing chemicals is a good thing no matter where the chemicals come from! |

This can be easily accomplished by outlawing the use of toxic liver-damaging or cancer-causing chemicals now used throughout the cosmetics and personal care industry.

We could accomplish it in two generations by taking tough action to outlaw cancer-causing chemicals and investing in genuine cancer prevention education. Drug companies would lose trillions of dollars in profits, hospitals would lose huge amounts of patients, and pro-cancer non-profit groups would lose power, money and prestige. But guess what? We'd all be better off without cancer.
Here's a startling statistic: Did you know that reducing the cancer death rate by just 1% would be worth almost $500 billion to the U.S. economy over the next hundred years or so? |

The bottom line in all this? New research shows us that using low-cost calcium and vitamin D supplements (or just natural sunlight), we could slash cancer rates by an astonishing 77 percent. The cancer industry opposes this and is firmly positioned as an opponent of cancer prevention. |

The sunscreen industry makes money by selling lotion products that actually contain cancer-causing chemicals. It then donates a portion of that money to the cancer industry through non-profit groups like the American Cancer Society which, in turn, run heart-breaking public service ads urging people to use sunscreen to "prevent cancer."
The scientific evidence, however, shows quite clearly that sunscreen actually promotes cancer by blocking the body's absorption of ultraviolet radiation, which produces vitamin D in the skin. |
| And that's due to two primary reasons: 1) Sunscreen blocks vitamin D production, a nutrient that strongly prevents cancer, and 2) Sunscreen products almost always contain cancer-causing chemicals that are absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream where they cause severe DNA damage, leading to cancer.
Seven important questions about sunscreen
The next time you see some public service advertisement urging you to smother yourself and your children with sunscreen chemicals, think hard before taking action. |

That's nearly three decades of keeping the public in the dark about the extremely harmful, cancer-causing chemicals found in sunscreen products. Any idea why the Food and Drug Administration has taken so long to set safety standards for a product used by over 100 million Americans? If you guessed, "Because the greedy corporations selling the toxic sunscreen products don't want the FDA to study the safety of their products," give yourself golden star sticker. You got it! |
| As the EWG reports, many sunscreen products contain cancer-causing chemicals that get absorbed right through the skin:
Some sunscreens absorb into the blood and raise safety concerns. Our review of the technical literature shows that some sunscreen ingredients absorb into the blood, and some are linked to toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, some act like estrogen and could disrupt hormone systems, several are strongly linked to allergic reactions, and still others may build up in the body or the environment. |

Specifically, the FDA currently allows known cancer-causing chemicals to be widely used in both foods and drugs. Sodium nitrite, for example, has been irrefutably shown to cause pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, leukemia and brain tumors in children, and yet the FDA looks the other way while processed meat manufacturers continue to add sodium nitrite to meat products sold throughout the country.
What about all the children eating hot dogs and getting brain tumors from the highly carcinogenic nitrosamines created by eating such foods? No problem: Blame China! |
| Everything from cough syrups to pain pills seems to be openly contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals ranging from synthetic sweeteners to petrochemical-derived coloring chemicals. You can hardly pick up an over-the-counter medication at a convenience store without seeing some scary chemical on the ingredients list.
The USDA, meanwhile, openly allows U.S. farmers to inject cattle with hormones and antibiotics that are banned in most other countries, and the agency even has an open policy of allowing U.S. |
| There is currently no effort underway to ban known cancer-causing chemicals from the food supply, even when the science is very clear about the damage such chemicals are causing to the U.S. public. Sodium nitrite is a clear example of a toxic ingredient that has no real use other than turning dead meats a pretty pink color, and yet neither the FDA nor USDA have taken any interest in attempting to ban this ingredient from foods.

But when it comes to preventing cancer, the cancer industry is silent. Why should they say anything, anyway? If they teach women how to prevent breast cancer, they lose customers. Besides, the scheme they're running right now is working brilliantly. |

Laundry products are not really regulated by any single government agency, and there is currently no law banning the use of known cancer-causing chemicals in laundry products (much like with cosmetics).
Filler ingredients. Nearly all commercial laundry products are made with at least 50% filler ingredients to "bulk them up" and make them appear to deliver more value for the price. Consumers are mostly just buying the illusion of detergent, made mostly with filler.

Air fresheners
Air fresheners contain cancer-causing chemicals. Unleashing them in the house exposes children to these chemicals, promoting asthma and other respiratory problems. If you value the health of your children, avoid air freshener products and just use essential oils or citrus peels instead. (Peel an orange and hang the peel in your kitchen.)
17. Synthetic vitamins
Many children's vitamins are made with cheap, synthetic "vitamin" chemicals that actually harm people who take them. Plus, many are loaded up with artificial colors, sucrose and chemical sweeteners. |
| Shampoo and bath products
Virtually all popular shampoo and bath products sold on the market contain cancer-causing chemicals. The ingredients read like a top-40 list of toxic chemicals. Virtually none of these chemicals have ever been tested or approved for use on humans (they are simply ignored because the FDA astonishingly believes the skin won't absorb chemicals). People have suddenly come to realize that brand-name dog food is so toxic that it will kill your dog, that toys from China contain dangerous levels of lead, that perfume products can contain as many as 21 different cancer-causing chemicals and that even popular laundry detergent products wash your clothes in a toxic brew of synthetic chemicals and artificial fragrances. Sites like NewsTarget and the Organic Consumers Association (www.OrganicConsumers.org) are, of course, trying to do something about this by educating consumers. |
| The safety of chemicals used in these products is utterly ignored by the FDA in much the same way that perfumes and cosmetic products containing cancer-causing chemicals are routinely ignored by the agency. The FDA makes virtually no effort to protect American consumers from cancer-causing or hormone-disrupting chemicals in tens of thousands of consumer products, and were it not for the efforts of consumer advocacy groups and environmental protection groups like the NRDC, no one would be protecting consumers at all. The sad truth is that most brand-name consumer products contain at least one toxic chemical, and that's true for food as much as it is for home care products. Unless you're shopping at a health food store and buying truly natural, organic, unscented and environmentally responsible products, you can bet there are toxic chemicals all over your home (and in your body) right now.
The average American consumer uses close to 100 toxic chemicals before she even leaves the house in the morning. |

Many cosmetics and personal care products, for example, are loaded with cancer-causing chemicals that soak right through the skin and enter the bloodstream, and yet these products proudly display pink ribbons, enticing gullible women to purchase them while thinking they're doing something useful to stop breast cancer.
If it wasn't for the fact that so many women are being killed by toxic products, it would all be quite hilarious. But the sad fact is that product marketers are exploiting both the pocketbooks and bodies of women in a quest to generate more profits at any cost... |

Technically, China should ban all processed meat imports from the United States, given that such meats contain detectable levels of cancer-causing chemicals in the form of sodium nitrite (and MSG, usually). They dismiss experimental studies of cancer-causing chemicals conducted in rats and mice. After all, we know we have to be different from those test rodents in laboratories. This type of reasoning is morally flawed and ignores one simple fact: the same basic structure of DNA is found in all mammals. If we cannot act to protect or prevent exposures to suspected cancer causes based on solid experimental reasoning, and if we insist on proof that humans have already been harmed, then we are treating people like experimental animals in a vast and largely uncontrolled study. |
