The study showed for the first time that adding a reasonable amount of flaxseed (the study used muffins containing 25 grams of flaxseed) for approximately 38 days reduced tumor growth in patients with breast cancer—similar to the benefits seen when the drug tamoxifen is given to patients before breast surgery.
Since then, many more studies have reported similarly favorable results. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial at the University of Toronto, for example, tested the effects of flaxseed in postmenopausal women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. |

Patients were stratified based on age, breast surgery, planned target radiation dose, and skin complexion, then randomized to a control group of no treatment or an Aloe vera treated (98% Aloe) group. The medications were applied to the treatment field twice daily starting within 3 days of radiation initiation. If radiation-induced dermatitis occurred, patients were instructed to apply a 1% hydrocortisone cream at least one hour either side of the Aloe or placebo application. |

This time, however, the examinations revealed that she had developed bone cancer in her lower spine and left knee. The breast surgery and resulting suppression of the immune system, had, as so often is the case, encouraged millions of cancer cells to develop in other already weakened parts of the body. Therefore, cancer cells began to grow in her lower spine where the resistance to cancer formation was particularly low.
Mary had also been suffering from severe menstrual problems as long as she remembered. In addition, she was diagnosed with having anemia. |

My major specialties were thyroid, parathyroid, gastrointestinal, and breast surgery, but I was always interested in vascular medicine, and made a point of taking extra training in the subject.
Medicine ran in the family. My father, Caldwell B. Esselstyn, was a distinguished physician, a great innovator in group practice in upstate New York. It was his idea to bring to a rural county all the best in medicine—from dentistry and psychiatry to obstetrics-gynecology and pediatrics—using a rotating roster of specialists. Some of the treatment options in breast surgery include:
• Lumpectomy, also known as segmental mastectomy or tylectomy. The tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue are removed. This is the least extensive type of breast cancer surgery. In most cases, a lumpectomy is followed by several weeks of radiation, which is an integral part of breast-conserving treatment.
• Quadrantectomy, also known as partial mastectomy. The quadrant of the breast in which the tumor was found is removed, including some skin and the lining of the chest muscle below the tumor.
• Simple mastectomy. |

In thinking about all the breast surgery he had done, the lumpectomies and mastectomies, he expressed disgust at the idea of "disfiguring somebody when you know that you haven't changed their chances for recovery"
He began to do some soul searching. "What is my epitaph going to be? Five thousand mastectomies! You've disfigured more women than anybody else in Ohio!" Dropping the sarcasm, he said with sincerity, "I think everybody likes to leave the planet thinking that maybe... maybe you've helped a little."
Dr. Esselstyn began studying the literature on the diseases he commonly treated. |

A placebo gel, an estrogen gel, a progesterone gel, or a combination estrogen/progesterone gel was applied to women's breasts for 14 days prior to breast surgery. After surgery, the breast tissue was analyzed. It was found that estradiol increased breast cell proliferation and that progesterone greatly decreased proliferation (Foidart et al. 1998b).
As Dr. John Lee (Lee et al. 1996) explained: "The goal of progesterone supplementation is to restore normal physiologic levels of bioavailable progesterone. |
| According to Minton, abstinence from consuming methylxanthine (a chemical present in foods and beverages that contain caffeine) decreased the need for major breast surgery and breast biopsies because of benign disease (Minton 1979, 1981, 1989).
A 2002 study of the literature on causes of breast pain found that some investigations did find an association between caffeine intake and FBD and breast pain (Norlock 2002). |
| Pseudolumps also result from silicone injections to enlarge the breasts or as a consequence of breast surgery or radiation therapy.
Fat Necrosis
Fat necrosis produces painless, round, firm lumps that form from damaged and disintegrating fatty tissue (National Cancer Institute 2001b). Fat necrosis is more likely to occur in obese women with large breasts. It may also develop in response to a bruise or blow to the breast. Sometimes the skin around these lumps looks red or bruised.
Breast Pain
Mastalgia refers to breast pain that is severe enough to cause a woman to seek medical treatment. |

Each year, hundreds of thousands of women around the world take doxorubicin at the same time that they undergo breast surgery. They not only undergo the personal loss of part or all of their breast, they also lose their hair. In addition, many end up with heart damage, a known side effect of doxorubicin in many situations. If vitamin E in an admittedly preliminary study was shown to protect against hair loss with doxorubicin, why has this study not been replicated as a real priority in cancer research? |

Studies published in Lancet and elsewhere have even suggested that radiation following breast surgery may increase death rates.2
Many radiation oncologists are growing weary of watching their patients die, and tired of hearing that progress is just around the corner. Seymour M. "I've been doing it for 39 years. |

After breast surgery but before the beginning of tamoxifen therapy, the doctors took a sample of endometrial tissue. After tamoxifen therapy was begun, such biopsies were repeated every four to six months as long as the patients remained asymptomatic. New hyperplastic changes were found in 3 out of 11 patients tested (27 percent). The preliminary results of this small study indicate that tamoxifen "may have some neoplastic effect on the endometrium of postmenopausal patients with breast cancer" (7). |

The results of a 12-year study of 44 women who had breast surgery shows that those who had operations between 7 and 20 days after the start of their last period were four times less likely to have cancer reoccur in comparison to those who had surgery at the very end or beginning of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone levels are high and estrogen levels low at the beginning and end of the menstrual cycle, and studies have shown that cancer cells grow faster at those levels.

In physical therapy, massage is frequently a necessary part of the management of lymphedema, in which the protein-rich fluids of the lymph system accumulate in tissue after breast surgery or radiotherapy. One key to the treatment of lymphedema is to spot it and treat it early, since prolonged presence of lymphedema in the tissue can break down the structure of the tissue so that it loses the elasticity necessary to squeeze out lymphatic accumulations. |

An unexpected source of income is new forms of breast surgery. A study at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center found that when doctors remove only the lump instead of the whole breast, the cost is 37 percent more. The increased cost is largely the result of additional radiation treatments required after the lumpectomy. Of about 500,000 patients who undergo breast cancer surgery in the United States each year, about 100,000 are now having lumpectomies. But according to Dr. |
| When women without lymph node involvement were given chemotherapy after breast surgery, they appeared to experience a small benefit. The problem was that these post-surgical treatments did not result in permanent gains:
All [four studies] find small improvement in disease-free survival but, after follow-up periods of three to four years, no definitive improvement in overall survival—that is, survival with or without disease (Relman, 1989).
This hardly seems like an earth-shattering advance. |
| Such use is becoming more common, critics charge, as more and more women opt for limited breast surgery augmented by radiation. Dr. Bernard Fisher of the University of Pittsburgh has disputed the value of this procedure. In a 1968 study of 3,000 women at over forty institutions, he found that those receiving postoperative radiation did no better than those receiving only surgery in the treatment of breast cancer (Fisher, 1968).
While this use of postoperative radiation is still subject to debate, it has become common practice in the United States. |
