The Intention Experiment: Using Your Thoughts to Change Your Life and the World

Before long I was receiving dozens of requests: people with cancer, children with brain damage or birth defects, estranged family members, wounded pets. I tried to choose carefully and always put up a photo of our Intention of the Week: a child with cerebral palsy; a newborn who'd sustained brain damage after a difficult birth; a teenage runaway; a woman who'd found the love of her life in late middle age only to discover she'd got breast cancer. Our site was turning into the cyber equivalent of a weekly prayer group.

Before You Take that Pill: Why the Drug Industry May Be Bad for Your Health

We were interested in studies of monkeys showing that exposure during pregnancy to dexamethasone, a drug used to prevent bleeding in the brain in premature babies, caused brain damage. No one had as yet considered the possibility that it could have such a side effect in human newborns, but I couldn't get any of the doctors working with the babies to collaborate with me on the research. Could it be that they didn't want to be associated with research that might reveal that a drug they had been using for years was actually causing brain damage?

Recent study: Rats that were fed diets enriched with these foods for one month prior to an induced stroke had only half as much brain damage as rats that were not fed these foods. This study suggests that including these foods —one cup of blueberries, a big spinach salad or a few teaspoons of spirulina powder—-in your daily diet may make a difference in the severity of a stroke. Conclusions on the effects of eating irradiated food included: Long term permanent brain damage. Alteration or loss of hormone production. Permanent damage within the human body. Stomach and intestinal tumors. Increase of cancer cells in human blood. Immune system deficiencies. Loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence. The use of microwave ovens is almost universal in restaurants and homes in North America.
They cause brain damage by exciting neurons to such a degree that various neurological malfunctions develop. Disorders can include headaches, seizures, hypoglycemia, strokes, tumors, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's dementia, Huntington's disease, and Lou Gehrig's disease (als). An in-depth analysis and explanation of the dangers of food additives and their effects can be found in Dr. Russell Blaylock's book Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills. Microwave Ovens Foods that have been subjected to microwave radiation are dangerous to our health.

For example, small brain tumors are often left alone because surgical intervention may cause brain damage. Prostate tumors are often so slow growing that males who opt for "watchful waiting"'live as long as patients who undergo surgical removal of their prostate. Explaining the disturbing trend for terminal cancer patients to receive chemotherapy and other aggressive but futile treatments in the last days of their lives, Dr. Roy Herbst of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston aptly says: "Patients don't like to give up.

David Yousem, MD When looking solely at the elderly patients, however, those who had dementia had significantly more structural brain damage and significantly less brain blood flow than the patients who did not have dementia. As measured in milliliters (mL), the dementia patients had an average cerebral blood flow of 443 mL per minute—108 mL per minute less than the healthy elderly group.
They believe that a chronic drop in cerebral blood pressure—resulting in declines in the delivery of oxygen and glucose, which are vital to brain functioning—causes brain damage that can trigger the onset of dementia. THE STUDY In the study, Dr. Aart Spilt, director of the department of radiology at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and his colleagues focused on a group of 17 Dutch patients, all older than 75 years of age and all diagnosed with late-onset dementia.
THE LOW BLOOD PRESSURE CONNECTION According to the Dutch team, late-onset dementia shows clear associations with both structural brain damage and decreased cerebral blood flow. "So we think the most important point is that besides hypertension—which is very important to regulate—it's also important to look at hypotension [low blood pressure], to see if elderly people with low blood pressure are at risk for dementia," Spilt says.
Infants are not able to detoxify mercury effectively, and it can cause nerve and brain damage in children. Some scientific evidence shows that thimerosal in vaccines leads to health problems, so in 1999 the US Public Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics—along with vaccine manufacturers—agreed that thimerosal should be reduced or eliminated from vaccines as a precaution. It has since been removed from childhood vaccines, yet manufacturers still are using thimerosal in the adult flu vaccine. However, a preservative-free vaccine in a single-dose syringe is available.

Left undetected, Lyme disease can cause spleen and lymph node enlargement, arthritis, brain damage, and an irregular heart rhythm. Symptoms usually subside slowly over a period of two to three years. Although antibiotic therapies are generally implemented, no cure has yet been found. If Lyme disease is suspected, consult with a physician as soon as possible. The sooner antibiotics are used, the more successful they are.

Iodine deficiency can cause brain damage, especially when it occurs in the fetuses of pregnant women after the first trimester and in children of up to three years of age. Iodine is critical for the growth and development of the brain and central nervous system. Stunted growth, mental retardation, and cretinism can affect the children of pregnant women with inadequate iodine intake. Pregnant and breastfeeding women can ensure adequate iodine by taking a daily prenatal supplement providing 150 meg of iodine. Pregnant women sometimes suffer from water retention.
It is estimated that 50 million people have some brain damage resulting from iodine deficiency. Goiter and Hypothyroidism One of the earliest signs of iodine deficiency is goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland. In older children and adults, goiter may be reversed with adequate intake of iodine. The incidence of goiter is more common in adolescent girls. Children who are deficient in iodine have poorer school performance, more learning disabilities, and lower intelligence quotients than normal children.
Iodine deficiency can cause brain damage, especially in the children of pregnant women after the first trimester and in children of up to three years of age. Iodine is critical for the growth and development of the brain and central nervous system. The damage to the brain caused by iodine deficiency is irreversible. If the deficiency is severe during pregnancy, it may result in cretinism in the child. Cretinism is a state of stunted growth and extreme mental retardation, resulting in intelligence quotients as low as 20.

Severe or recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia can result in permanent brain damage.5 With the scientific definition behind us, we can simplify the victims' commonality this way: • Type 1 IDDM requires insulin for the sustenance of life. Diabetics must have insulin to balance the effects of HYPERglycemia (high blood sugar) —the defining characteristic of the disease. • Insulin periodically causes HYPOglycemia (low blood sugar). The severity and frequency of hypoglycemic episodes determine the amount of brain dysfunction and concomitant effect on the diabetic.

Deficiency can cause goiter, cretinism, and brain damage to fetuses. Sources: iodized salt, seaweed, fish. Forms in the body: thyroxine (T4) and the more active form, triiodothyronine (T3). Summary for Selenium Main functions: needed for the important antioxidant glutathione peroxidase. Needed to convert thyroxine to the more active thyroid hormone. RDA: adults, 55 meg. Toxicity: toxic in large amounts with skin and digestive symptoms. Tolerable upper intake level is 400 meg for adults. Deficiency can reduce antioxidant activity and thyroid function.

Over time there may be some brain damage because some structures, such as the hippocampus, are very sensitive to high Cortisol levels. Later in life, this can spell serious afflictions, not the least of which may be Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. There is new evidence for my position: A report in Science News (2005) that very early stress in animals can be "brain-altering and memory sapping."14 The implication is that early trauma can lead to serious memory loss later in life, and implicates the hippocampus in the problem.

Over-consumption of plants in the cabbage family and certain other plants can also cause goiter. These plants are known as goitrogens because they promote goiter.

The insulin had caused her blood sugar to crash to such a low level that she was on the verge of suffering brain damage. She recovered fully, but her father says he will never view a hospitalization in quite the same way again. In his book Human Error, British psychologist James Reason argues that complex systems that depend upon everybody doing everything right all the time are inevitably filled with what he calls "latent errors," accidents just waiting to happen. Not surprisingly, latent errors abound in medicine.
By the time doctors realized the patient was bleeding and sent her in for surgery, it was often too late to prevent devastating brain damage, or even death. Similarly, before the advent of CT, neurologists had no way of knowing if a patient's neurological symptoms, such as slurring of speech, difficulty walking, or cognitive deficits, were due to a stroke or a brain tumor until they went in for exploratory surgery. CT scans allowed doctors to peer inside the skull and spot tumors, or catch bleeds in time to make a difference.

Meningitis can result in long-term permanent disabilities such as hearing loss and brain damage. The most serious type of meningitis is caused by the meningococcus bacteria, for which the vaccine was developed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 3,000 cases of meningococcal disease occur in the United States every year. The overall fatality rate is approximately 10%, but it is sometimes higher in young people. The most dangerous result from the meningococcal bacteria is sepsis, or blood infection, Offit says.

In fact, most pharmaceuticals cause damage to various organs of the body, including liver damage, heart damage, brain damage and kidney damage. Many pharmaceuticals cause heart attacks and strokes, and nearly all pharmaceuticals cause nutritional deficiencies that are almost never mentioned by doctors, drug companies or even the FDA. Furthermore, most drugs don't even work on most people. To be approved by the FDA, a pharmaceutical only has to demonstrate some effect on about five percent of those who take it.

If they even survived the initial chemical onslaught, most chemotherapy patients begin to show symptoms of heart damage, liver damage, kidney damage or brain damage within a few years (if not right away). They often live in a state of severe immune system suppression, and when their cancer returns, they have few internal resources left to stave off the disease. That's why cancers often return as more aggressive diseases following chemotherapy. The chemo destroys the immune system and lets cancer have free reign over the body.

After the pups were born and able to exercise, though, the activity reversed the brain damage to normal, which was startling. The findings have already had an impact on how doctors recommend handling babies with fetal alcohol syndrome. Parents used to be advised to keep the environment quiet and dark so as not to overstimulate the babies. Now it seems that it's better to provide physical stimulation and activity, to give the babies' brains a chance to counteract their neurological deficits.

Folic acid deficiency can give you cancer, and iron deficiencies can cause brain damage. "The poor are eating these horrible diets, and I think they're making their kids stupid." Biotin deficiency, zinc deficiency, magnesium deficiency are all problems. "Anytime you are deficient in micronutrients throughout life you're taking it out of DNA and aging faster and getting cancer." Dr. Ames explained that black people are not getting enough sun in the US. All African Americans have Vitamin D deficiency and they consequently have higher rates of cancer.
As one example, carbon fullerenes — also called buckyballs, and currendy being used in some moisturizers — can cause brain damage in fish, and even low levels of exposure can be toxic to human liver cells.26 The health impacts of nanomaterials in cosmetics and sunscreens remain largely unknown, pending completion of long-range studies that have only recently begun. But that's not stopping the cosmetics industry from leading the charge to incorporate the inadequately tested technology into products we put on our faces and in our hair.

SPEAKING TOO LOUDLY OR TOO SOFTLY Have you ever sat in a restaurant and one voice stood out loud and clear above the others? When someone speaks in an overly loud voice in public, in private, or on a cell phone, it can be extremely annoying. It may be a tip-off that the person is indeed annoying or seeking attention. But always speaking loudly is more often a sign of hearing loss.
