This effect was stumbled upon by plastic surgeons giving patients cosmetic injections of botox. botox, a therapeutic variant of the protein present in botulism toxin, paralyzes muscles into which it is injected. When injected into the facial muscles of patients with deeply lined skin, it paralyzes the muscles, and the skin smoothes out for a few months.
What cosmetic surgeons began noticing, however, was that in some of their botox patients who were depressed, the depression lifted after the injection. According to one report:
Kathleen Delano had suffered from depression for years. |

Frown lines (below the mouth) and chin creases may also be improved with a botox injection, but the response varies. The cost of a botox injection is about $400 and includes up to 35 units of botox. If botox migrates to the wrong muscle, side effects such as drooping of the eyelid or unevenness of the eyebrows may develop. botox is purely cosmetic and has no actual healing effect on the skin itself.
The Inside Story
Nourishing the skin with topical ingredients is important, but in addition it is essential that you feed your skin nourishing food and drink. |

In 2004, her physician injected five doses of the toxin into the muscles between Delano's eyebrows.... Eight weeks later...her depression had lifted.30

The alteration of the physical structure seemed to catalyze an alteration of the mental state. A happier "look"—even one artificially induced—produced a happier experience. While we know that changing the mind changes the body, it also seems that the reverse is true: Changing the body changes the mind. |

Incredible as it seems, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in Missouri are currently evaluating botox?injections to help treat foot ulcers.65 botox injections are a diluted form of botulism that will paralyze the specified muscle area.
Botulinum toxin is made by the bacteria Clostridium botuli-num. The bacteria themselves (and their spores) are harmless, but the toxin is considered one of the most lethal known poisons, one that has been a principle agent in biological warfare.66 It binds to nerve endings where they join muscles, leading to weakness or paralysis. |

| Although many people associate botox skin injections with the "frozen" look sometimes seen on the faces of film stars, I prefer to use it more judiciously to relax muscles and give the face a destressed look.
Note: I do not recommend silicone injections to smooth the skin. Unlike other fillers, silicone is permanent, meaning that you are stuck with the result and your face may not age well around it.
Cost: Restylane and Perlane cost approximately $750* for the first syringe. There may be a discount for additional syringes used during the same treatment. Most people need more than one syringe. |

These days, billboards can be seen along freeways and in airports touting hospital amenities and procedures, with headlines like "We Do botox!" and "The More You Know About Uterine Fibroids, the Better You'll Feel." The tagline on a series of ads in the New York Times Magazine extolling the healing powers of Mount Sinai Hospital, in Manhattan, was "Another Day, Another Breakthrough." And while hospitals publicly deplore the competitive atmosphere fueled by rankings in U.S. News & World Report, those that top the list are happy to advertise their position. |

He says things like "Beauty has always been dangerous" and "Women are willing to put up with it" — for instance, "Botox, let's stick frog poison in our eyebrows." He reminded me that the most common injury from cosmetics is getting poked in the eye with a mascara wand while driving. And he is especially skeptical of regulations because "it's a free country."
But when it comes to a safer cosmetics industry, Bruce is unequivocal: "We can do better. There are a lot of things in the world we can improve without too much work and this is one of them. |

Dermatologists turned to cosmetic procedures like botox injections and chemical peels. Ophthalmologists began specializing in surgical procedures, like eyelid tucks. Between 2000 and 200c, the number of elective procedures performed by physicians around the country rose dramatically, most of them paid for by insurance. Among Medicare recipients, colonoscopies went up 40 percent; angioplasties, 34 percent; and cardiovascular stress tests, 45 percent. |

SCIENTIFIC TESTS ARE NEEDED
Cosmetic surgeons don't dismiss the idea that facial acupuncture is effective, but for now published scientific evidence is lacking, they say.

| Most people need more than one syringe. botox costs $400 to $600 for a single area of the face treated, also with some discount for each additional area treated.
A patient's own fat is a good filler, as well, because it gives the face an especially soft, natural look. For such fat transfer, the person's own fat is taken from another area of the body, usually the thighs or buttocks. Because this requires a micro-liposuction procedure, exceptionally thin people are not candidates. Once the fat is harvested, it is frozen and remains usable for three years. |
| There are other forces driving demand, too, including consumers who are tired or wary of repeated botox injections. So, business-savvy acupuncturists are marketing their alternative approach as a holistic solution.
THE PROCEDURE
In facial acupuncture, the practitioner inserts small needles into "pressure points" in the face. According to supporters, this boosts blood flow to the area, producing tighter muscles and a more youthful appearance. |
| While some studies have been published suggesting that facial acupuncture reduces lines and wrinkles, Casas says that what is needed is a good scientific study—one in which acupuncture is performed on one side of the face and botox or no procedure on the other side. Then, photo documentation could show the effects of each.

Know the Symptoms
Up to one-half of all Americans cannot name a single stroke symptom. Many victims don't seek emergency care because they don't take their symptoms seriously.
Warning: Some people who have a stroke experience brain damage that makes it impossible for them to recognize symptoms. It's critical for family members, friends or coworkers to recognize the first signs of stroke.

Many women believe a skin-care product can work better than botox (after all, that's what the ads say), but nothing could be further from the truth.
I am often asked, "How do they get away with it?" How do cosmetics companies get away with what is either misleading information or out-and-out lying to the public? Because for these companies, getting around cosmetics regulations worldwide has become an art that has left the consumer between a rock and a hard place. |

| SO WHY CAN'T "ANTI-WRINKLE" CREAMS WORK BETTER THAN botox?

The only part of the cosmetics industry that is strictly regulated for the consumer's protection is the ingredient list, but even there I see lots of problems. The FDA has approved botox for use in treating excessive underarm sweating. Such injections have been used to control sweaty palms and feet.
It makes sense, though, to try topical aluminum chloride first. Available in products such as Drysol, it is far less costly and less invasive than surgery or injections and can be quite effective.

Conclusions
Excessive sweating, whether of the underarms, hands, or feet, can cause people a lot of anxiety and disruption in their lives. If you have this problem, make sure you tell your doctor about it and ask for help with it. |
| This unique approach is far cheaper than getting botox injections, which do work amazingly well for heavy sweating. One mother wrote to us to say, "My daughter had skin reactions to all the deodorants she tried. The rash and itching were uncomfortable. She didn't like going without a deodorant because of the odor. The milk of magnesia solution you wrote about is both economical and effective."
Another reader shared this experience: "I used tart cherries to cure a gout attack and it worked. The real news is that the pain from osteoarthritis of the hip joint diminished also. |
| But after I asked my doctor for a referral to the botox clinic for armpit shots, she prescribed Drysol. It works for me. I am dry, and it is a miracle of modern chemistry!
Antiperspirants seem to be more effective for underarms than for sweaty hands and feet.647 Hands and feet may need an aluminum chloride concentration as high as 30 to 40 percent.
A study of aluminum chloride in a salicylic acid gel base found that this worked well for a majority of the patients with sweaty feet and hands. |

• Consider botox injections
Why do we sweat? One important reason is to regulate body temperature. If we didn't have sweat glands in the skin all over our bodies, we'd need to stick out our tongues and pant like dogs to cool off in hot weather. Although that may be the function of sweating, plenty of people can tell you that's not all there is to it. They're the ones who perspire far more than is strictly necessary for cooling purposes. Almost all of us sweat when we are anxious as well.
Nearly 3 percent of adults sweat too much, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. |
| Botox injections can also be used for sweaty hands.
Side effects: Pain, itching, shoulder muscle soreness, allergic reactions, rash Downside: Expensive; must be repeated every 6 months or so. Other areas (such as the face) may begin to sweat more heavily in compensation.
Cost: $500 or more per treatment
For them, surgery may be helpful. One option for hyperhidrosis that was not available in times past evolved from cosmetic surgery. Liposuction is usually used to remove excess fat, but it also can be employed to take some of the sweat glands from the armpits. |
