In 1998, investigators reported that the daily exposure of infants to isofiavones in soy infant formula is 6 to 11 times higher on a body weight basis than the dose that has hormonal effects in adults consuming soy foods. Circulating concentrations of isofiavones in infants fed soy-based formula were 13,000 to 22,000 times higher than plasma estradiol concentrations in infants on cows milk formula. ... Fitzpatrick estimated that an infant exclusively fed soy formula receives the estrogenic equivalent (based on body weight) of at least five birth control pills per day. |

Hirose had discovered that the daily intake of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and total calories was lowest among centenarians (mostly because of their lower body weight). The big difference between centenarians and younger populations was the greater appetite for vegetables, and especially for dairy products, among centenarians. They didn't necessarily eat more or less than others, relative to body weight, but what they did eat was rich in calcium, vitamins, and iron. |
| The fifth and final recommendation is to maintain a fairly normal body weight, an increasingly important issue in the United States. "It turns out a lot of the very active chemicals that relate to inflammation probably have some impact on increasing the likelihood of cancer developing," Fraser said. "Those chemicals could well come from fat cells. One huge advantage of a vegetarian diet is how much it is associated with lower body weight. |

Vitamin C Deficiency
Approximately 4,000 mammals can still synthesize vitamin C (ascorbic acid), producing, on average, some 50 mg of vitamin C per kg of body weight each day. Although humans have significant requirements for vitamin C, they cannot synthesize it and are forced to scavenge it from their environments. This dependency often leads to a deficiency, however, because humans typically ingest only 1 mg per kg of body weight of this vitamin daily.1 That is, without supplementation, the environment no longer provides humans with the optimum intake of vitamin C. |

Unlike the BowFlex, which uses flexible rods and a pulley system to create resistance, the Total Gym's resistance is created by a pul-
ToTAt Gym ley system where you either push or pull your own body weight to create the resistance. You adjust the weight by inclining or declining the sled that carries your body weight. Total Gym provides a chart so you can estimate the amount of weight you are lifting. Accessories can be purchased to add weight for those who need more resistance. |

Diet: Stick to a healthy weight-loss program that will help you lose 10% of your body weight. Overweight people tend have bulky neck tissue, which can lead to snoring. Losing just modest amount of weight—even just 10% of your body weight—can make a difference. Avoid alcohol and other sedatives, such as sleeping pills. Anything that causes sedation can also cause snoring because it tends to suppress your breathing drive.
TIP: CHANGE YOUR SLEEPING POSITION
Sleep on your side, rather than your back. |

The lowest biosynthesis of vitamin C is 40 mg per kilogram of body weight daily for the dog or cat; this works out to 2800 mg daily for a person of 70 kilograms (154 pounds). The highest biosynthesis of vitamin C is in the mouse, which synthesizes 275 mg of vitamin C per kilogram of body weight daily; this works out to about 20 grams (20,000 mg) daily for a 70-kilogram person. If humans could synthesize their own vitamin C, the amount synthesized daily might be between 2800 mg and 20,000 mg. |

In addition, in order for the test to be valid, according to AAFCO standards, six of the eight dogs starting the feeding trial must finish the test and the dogs cannot lose more than 15 percent of their starting body weight. That is the complete criteria for AAFCO feeding trials. (Some pet food companies also conduct theit own research or have an independent company test their foods. Drinking green tea turned out to be strongly indicative of lower levels of cholesterol, even after taking into account age, smoking, alcohol use, and body weight. Men who drank ten or more cups of green tea daily had significantly lower cholesterol levels. The cholesterol profile was favorably affected in the green tea drinkers, and LDL-cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) decreased while HDL-cholesterol (the good cholesterol) increased in those who drank the most green tea. |

Clinical studies have shown that as 7-keto DHEA levels go down in middle age, body weight tends to goes up.
Weight loss is stimulated by 7-keto DHEA through a process called thermogenesis, the creation of heat at a cellular level. The more thermogenesis, the higher the metabolic rate and the more that fat is literally burned up as energy. Studies have also demonstrated that 7-keto DHEA does not accumulate in the body over time and that it is free of unhealthy side effects. |

The brain is a conspicuous consumer of glucose, using 20 percent of the available fuel even though it accounts for only about 3 percent of our body weight. But it has no capacity to store fuel, so Cortisol's role in providing a steady flow of glucose is critical to proper brain function. Operating on a fixed budget of fuel, the brain has evolved to shift energy resources as necessary, meaning that mental processing is competitive. It's simply not possible to have all of our neurons firing at once, so if one structure is active, it must come at the expense of another. |

ROLFING AND ASTHMA
Rolfing can be very effective in correcting the hunched posture assumed by some asthmatics, and for loosening and breaking up muscle tension around the spinal column and scapular region. Pain tolerance levels must be considered and need to be carefully monitored but, provided the patient can cope with this treatment, rolfing is suitable for adults who believe the cause of their distress is due to a misaligned body structure. |

They used calories burned per pound of body weight as the "dose" measure. The high-intensity groups burned an average of 1,400 calories (eight calories per pound) during the course of either three or five sessions per week. At the end of three months, regardless of frequency, the high-intensity groups cut their depression scores in half. Practically speaking, their symptoms dropped significantly. The low-intensity groups burned an average of 560 calories (three calories per pound) and lowered their scores by a third, about the same as the stretching group — and about as effective as a placebo. |

Further, while swimming the body weight is partially supported by the water. This means that strain and pressure on muscles and joints is lessened, which in turn promotes freedom of movement in the water. The result is that swimming involves less physical demands on the body than sports such as running or cycling. The same reason means that aqua-aerobics and hydrotherapy are also good exercise for people whose bodies, or asthma, are not able to take the strain of higher pressure sports. |

The combined effects of green tea may make it applicable to the treatment of obesity. Sixty obese middle-aged women were placed on a diet of 1,800 calories per day. Some of the women took green tea supplements with breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the others took placebo pills. After two weeks on this regimen, the women taking green tea extract had lost twice as much weight as the placebo group. |

We do know that blood pressure is affected by several factors, including body weight, certain dietary components, genetic predisposition, cigarette smoking, stress, exercise, and percentage of body fat. Endocrine disorders, including adult-onset diabetes associated with obesity, also contribute to hypertension.18

Pesticides are toxic, but the risk depends on what chemicals are in their formulation, and the amount, length, and kind of exposure; whether they are ingested in food, absorbed through the skin, or inhaled; and the body weight, age, and health of the person exposed.
Great care should be taken when handling pesticides or insecticides. Breathing and skin protection should be used. Any such household chemicals must be stored away from children. Washing and peeling can help to remove some residues from fruit and vegetables, but others are systemic, found within the fruit or vegetable themselves. |

Research studies of animals and humans show that a high-fat diet increases the risk of many cancers, including colon and prostate cancer. Conversely, a low-fat diet has been shown to reduce the risk of many cancers. An additional benefit of a low-fat diet is the fact that it helps most people maintain a healthy weight. |

Just multiply your body weight by eight to figure out how much you should be burning for the high dose, and then head to the gym to find out how many calories you burn during a given workout (most of the aerobic machines track this for you). If you weigh 150 pounds and burn 200 calories in thirty minutes on the elliptical trainer, you'd want to do six sessions a week to meet the high dose.
I would recommend at least this much exercise for anyone who, like my patient Bill, has a shadow syndrome of depression. |

| Waist to Hip Ratio is a good gauge of body weight distribution, particularly in terms of health. To figure out your WHR, measure the circumference of your hips at the widest part of your buttocks. Then measure your waist at the smallest circumference of your waist just above your belly button. Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement and that's your WHR. Use the simple table below to determine if you are within a healthy range with your WHR. |

The conclusion of the study is that it is unlikely that a dog consuming dry dog food would experience any adverse effects from the low levels found in these foods, and that these levels are "probably safe." (Keep in mind that our pets eat these foods on a daily basis for many years. This study lasted eight weeks. |
