Anyone with a body mass index of 30 or greater was categorized as obese. Using the body mass index to determine risk for diabetes is not completely reliable and can keep these numbers lower than they actually are. Taking averages in human statistic analysis always ends up distorting the true figures. A balanced Vata type, for example has a naturally lower weight than average. According to the body mass index Vatas are considered underweight. Their bones are much lighter and they have very little body fat on them. |

How to Measure Your Body Mass Index
Using the body mass index (BMI) is one of the most common ways of calculating whether a person's weight is normal or not. |

Wondering where you fit in? The body mass index or BMI is the measure of a person's body fat based on height and weight. For adults, you're "normal" if your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9; "overweight" if you have a body mass index or BMI of 25 to 29.9; "obese" if your BMI is 30 or more, and "morbidly obese" if your BMI is greater than 40 or you're at least 100 pounds overweight. To learn your BMI, visit the CDC's website at www.cdc.gov/ nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm.

The body mass index (BMI) reflects body weight adjusted for a person's height. Multiply your weight (lbs.) by 703 and divide by your height (in.) squared to find your BMI. If your BMI is higher than 25, you're overweight, according to CDC standards.
Obesity is more common among Hispanics and Native Americans of both sexes and more common among African American women than among European Americans. |

Analyses using conditional logistic regression models controlling for age, body mass index, socioeconomic status, smoking, hypertension, and maternal and paternal history of disease showed lycopene to be protective with an odds ratio of 0.52 for the contrast of the 10th and 90th percentiles (95% confidence interval 0.33-0.82, p<0.005). The median lyco-pene adipose tissue concentration for controls was 0.27 mg/g of fatty acid. The effect of lycopene was strongest in nonsmokers. |

In fact, the population as a whole had ideal weight-to-height ratios as compared to the body mass index figures used by nutritionists. Digestive problems are rare. Constipation is uncommon. They average two or more bowel movements a day. Atherosclerosis, heart disease, colitis, colon cancer, hemorrhoids, ulcers, diverticulitis, and appendicitis are conditions with which they are generally unfamiliar. |
| If a Vata type adds 25 pounds of body weight, it can cause him serious health problems, but according to the body mass index this extra weight would bring him up to the normal range. Kapha types, on the other hand, have a very heavy body structure already. They cannot afford to add 25 pounds without causing them to develop a typical Kapha disorder, such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer.
By removing the discrepancies that exist with currently used body mass calculations, it is likely that almost every diabetic is overweight or obese. |

| Ideally, your weight should be brought down to the normal range, which means a body mass index (BMI), a ratio of weight to height, of 18.5 to 24.9. To find your BMI, use the free calculator at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Web site at http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi. Or use the formula (weight in pounds x 703) * height in inches squared. |

At baseline and after 16 weeks, body mass index, waist circumference, body fat, muscle mass, and serum lipid levels were measured. To confirm isoflavone absorption, urinary concentrations were determined. After 16 weeks of intervention, both SPE and PLE groups showed a significant increase of 1.3 kg in muscle mass and reduction of waist circumference of -1.4 and -2.1 cm, respectively (p<0.05). |

| Generally, people who are considered candidates for bariatric surgery have a body mass index (BMI) higher than 40, which means they are approximately 100 pounds overweight if they are male and 80 pounds overweight if they are female, according to the NIDDK. People who have lower BMIs may also be considered candidates for the surgery if they have obesity-related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, severe sleep apnea or heart disease.
A majority of the procedures are done on women (84%) and those who have private insurance (83%), according to the study. |

Immune Function
Studies of beta-carotene's effects on immune function have yielded conflicting results. In one placebo-controlled crossover study (n=25), supplementation with beta-carotene 15 mg daily for 26 days resulted in an elevated expression of peripheral blood monocyte surface molecules involved in initiating immune responses and an increased secretion of tumor necrosis factor alpha. |

We obsess over our latest cholesterol reading, bone density, body mass index. We scour the health sections of newspapers, wondering if we or our loved ones are exhibiting the symptoms of this or that rare or previously unheard-of ailment, like restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, bruxism, panic attacks, micro-obesity, and metabolic syndrome, to name just a few of the conditions that have cropped up in the news in recent years. |

| In the West, body mass index is increasing, and it's thought that by becoming obese, people are more predisposed to getting heartburn [GERD]."
"Probably the single most important thing we can do is lose weight, because increased abdominal weight tends to hold back the normal flow of food, and that's one thing that can create GERD," says Dr. B. Jay Brooks, Jr., chairman of hematology/oncology at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. |

One way of gauging whether or not you are overweight is by calculating your body mass index (BMI) by dividing your total weight (in kg) by your total height (in meters) squared. Those with a BMI of 25-30 are considered overweight, while people with a BMI of over 30 are classified as obese. Obesity is now a worldwide problem. The occurrence of the condition has increased five fold since the 1940s and experts now believe we are facing an obesity epidemic. The condition can be triggered by many factors. |
| Following the diet above, keeping the body mass index under 28, exercising, reducing stress, and keeping alcohol intake to a minimum are usually enough to ensure prevention. At the first signs of insulin resistance, begin a weight loss program, swap carbs for complex, low glycemic index foods (whole grains and fruits and vegetables), and exercise (for example, fast walking) at least 20 minutes a day. The minerals chromium and vanadium are helpful for this condition as are several herbs, fenugreek and cinnamon in particular. |

It appears that for women who are not overweight, moderate exercise may be beneficial for hot flashes and more vigorous exercise may exacerbate them.

Over the next three months, I lost twenty pounds without trying, and my body mass index decreased to 23.5, which is within the normal range. When I had my blood sugar checked a few months later, I discovered that it had decreased 24 points to 87 mg/dl. It was a significant change—without much effort.
Over the next couple of years, I made a point of cutting back even more on refined sugarlike carbs, such as pasta, pizza, bread, tortillas, pitas, cereals, muffins, and bagels. My eating habits emphasized fresh fish, chicken, a lot of vegetables, and small amounts of brown rice or yams. |
| At the time, I had a thirty-eight-inch waist and, at 170 pounds, was about twenty pounds overweight, with a body mass index of 27.
My fasting blood sugar was 111 mg/dl, which is prediabetic, and my cholesterol and triglycerides were also high. My body's levels of chromium, zinc, and magnesium, the minerals involved in managing blood sugar, were low. A dietary analysis found that I was eating too many refined, sugarlike carbohydrates, including pasta and fruit juices.
I knew what all of the test numbers meant. I was in my mid-forties and a disaster waiting to happen. Worse, I was embarrassed. |

High daily intakes of water (five or more glasses) were associated with significantly lower risk for fatal coronary heart disease events, even after adjusting for smoking, hypertension, and body mass index. That's a pretty powerful study.
The Eight-Glass-a-Day Rule
In the interest of completeness, I should point out that there are naysayers who argue that the whole dehydration issue has been overhyped. Kidney specialists feel that the "eight glasses" rule is an overestimate and that an average-size adult with healthy kidneys in a temperate climate needs no more than one liter of fluid. |

Test #1: body mass index (BMI)
The body mass index, or BMI, helps you determine the appropriate weight for your frame. For most people, the BMI test is more reliable than scales or height/weight charts are, but you should know that people with very muscular physiques may come up with a misleading reading. Because muscle weighs more than fat, many professional athletes have high BMIs—although, clearly, they don't need to lose weight.
Here's how to calculate your BMI. After each step are sample calculations, made for a person who is 5'8" and 150 pounds:

| A careful interpretation of the body mass index, the triglyceride level and the patient's family history of diabetes is [also] needed in order to better identify those at high risk," Tirosh adds.

An initial physical examination followed by ongoing exams is essential in assessing the mother's body mass index (BMI) and appropriate weight gain and fetal growth. BMI relates weight to height and thus provides a better estimate of body fat distribution than weight alone. The practitioner uses the BMI to determine whether the mother is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. Weight is a very important indicator of fetal health and requires precise and regular measurement. |

In a woman with a body mass index (BMI) less than 25, weight loss of as little as 5 percent can be significant in helping to normalize menses and ovulation, especially in cases of polycystic ovary syndrome.2^ Weight gain in an underweight woman is important as well. Overall, the preponderance of evidence suggests that a normal body weight increases the success of assisted reproductive therapies such as in vitro fertilization.
Focusing on daily exercise and a whole foods diet free of processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine is important to help normalize weight as well as blood sugar. |

Olive oil, with a monounsaturated fatty acid rich in oleic acid, is especially heart-healthy. Most of the beneficial effects of olive oil, especially the richer virgin olive oil, are attributed to its high monounsaturated fatty acid content. |
