Rimando demonstrated that blueberries, particularly their skins, can lower cholesterol when fed to animals.
Some thirty different species of blueberries are native to North America. The berries are rich in anthocyanins, widely recognized for their antioxidant qualities. blueberries are also a good source of ellagic acid, which blocks metabolic pathways that can lead to cancer. |
| REPPED: A compound found in blueberries shows promise of preventing colon cancer, according to a new study. Scientists at Rutgers University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a joint study on animals, and found that the compound -- called pterostilbene -- lessened pre-cancerous lesions and inhibited genes involved in inflammation. Researchers presented the study at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in March.
"This study underscores the need to include more berries in the diet, especially blueberries," said study leader Bandaru Reddy, Ph.D. |

| This study underscores the need to include more berries in the diet, especially blueberries," said study leader Bandaru Reddy, Ph.D., a professor in the chemical biology department at Rutgers. Although the blueberry compound won't cure colon cancer, it represents a strategy for preventing the disease naturally, said Reddy, who specializes in studying the relationship between nutrition and colon cancer.
The researchers studied 18 rats in which colon cancer had been induced in a manner similar to human colon cancer development. |

Medicine from nature: blueberries
One of my favorite solutions for fighting cholesterol levels is eating lots of blueberries. blueberries have now been proven to be more effective than statin drugs in reducing cholesterol levels, and yet they have absolutely no negative side effects whatsoever. You can get blueberries throughout the year if you go to the right stores. |

Here's a hint for all the free-thinking people out there who haven't given in to the propaganda from the mass media and the pharmaceutical industry: just eat some blueberries, folks. It's really not complicated. This is what your ancestors did. This is what your body was designed to eat. Just go out, eat some fresh roots like carrots and radishes, get yourself some fresh greens such as spinach, broccoli and kale, and eat fresh berries in large quantities -- blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. |
| In fact, the research shows that a compound in blueberries acts just as effectively as statin drugs to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol in mice, but without the negative side effects of statin drugs (such as having your muscles waste away).
In response to these results, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) thinks that perhaps the antioxidant ingredient could be 'developed as a treatment.' Huh? What kind of development do we need here? Can't people just grab blueberries and chew on them and swallow the antioxidants the way normal human beings do? |

Fruity Omelet (Serves 1)
You can buy bags of frozen blueberries and raspberries at most grocers, natural food stores, and Trader Joe s. They work better than fresh for this recipe because the frozen berries release some of their water as they defrost, and the water forms a light sauce.
1 tablespoon frozen blueberries, defrosted 1 tablespoon frozen raspberries, defrosted 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 pat butter
2-3 eggs
The night before, place a small amount of frozen blueberries and raspberries in a small plastic container and keep it in the fridge to thaw out. |

It's downright amazing that none of the people who look at this come to the obvious conclusion that hey, maybe we should just tell people to eat more blueberries.
And, if some of these people could take yet another quantum leap of introspection, perhaps they could realize that there might be other berries that are also good for human beings, such as cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, acai, or pomegranate seeds.
But no, instead it's all about how can we exploit this naturally occurring chemical compound and use it to make some bucks for corporate investors. |

Many scientific studies have found that blueberries and cranberries are beneficial in fighting UTIs by blocking or prohibiting the growth of bacteria. Cranberry juice has traditionally been known to clear up a bladder infection or urinary tract infection within one to two days. Take two to three ounces of juice three to four times per day, about Vi hour before meals and just before going to sleep.
Research shows that blueberries contain high concentrations of antioxidant compounds with medicinally beneficial properties. |

Blueberries actually help neurons in the brain communicate with one another more effectively.
"Old neurons are kind of like old married couples," Joseph says. "They don't talk to each other so much anymore." Memory goes down and the "processing" necessary for coordination and balance tends to decline. The technical term for this communication is signaling, and special compounds in blueberries called polyphenols actually "turn on" the signals. |

After that's all done, blend 200 grams of blueberries with water. Add some spirulina powder. Then pour this right into the bowl (no need to strain the blueberries).
Pour into glass jars. It yields from 5 to 6 quarts of juice. If you don't get at least five quarts of juice, add more water.
Drink and enjoy! You should be able to drink at least 3 quarts a day. It's better to drink 4 or 5. If you're really physically active, you can drink 6 quarts.
Options: You can add raw almonds, raw sesame seeds, Incan berries (www.GoodCauseWellness. |

While blueberries have emerged as a superfood for the brain, they're not the only food that has an effect. Researchers writing in the Journal of Neuroscience reported that rats that consumed an extract of blueberries, straw- O berries, and spinach every day showed improve- oj ments in short-term memory. ^ c;
And let's not forget the value of fish ^ m and fish oil. Inflammation is a big component 1/5 of every degenerative disease, including
Alzheimer's, and fish oil is one of the most anti-inflammatory substances on the planet.

How narrow-minded do these drug company types really have to be to take a look at a gift from nature like blueberries and realize that it has a powerful chemical compound that lowers cholesterol naturally with zero side effects, and then decide that hey, maybe we could exploit this to make a new profitable prescription drug that we could market to the public at sky high prices! How ethically twisted do you have to be as an individual to think that way about the healing foods nature has provided?
Here's what we really need to be doing in this country. |

You can get blueberries throughout the year if you go to the right stores.
If you can't find them at a grocery store, check out my book called "Secret Sources," which gives you the location of an online retailer where you can purchase freeze-dried blueberries, and you can store them all year long and use them any time you want. That's a very convenient way to take blueberries. It's a little on the pricey side, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than statin drugs! And of course, it's a fraction of the cost of actually ending up in the hospital with out-of-control cholesterol levels. |

My advice to anyone on statin drugs is to strongly consider using high doses of aloe vera + blueberries to safety transition off statin drugs (all under the supervision of a naturopathic physician, of course). Aloe vera won't kill you like statin drugs can, either. Aloe is completely safe to eat like a food. Given the cholesterol benefits of aloe and blueberries, statin drugs are actually obsolete. There are natural alternatives that are far safer, less expensive and more effective. Aloe vera is one of them.

Plus, this is far safer than using statin drugs, which have extremely harmful negative side effects while depleting the body of nutrients such as CoQ10.

If you go down the whole chart and eat the various colors, you will be preventing chronic disease in a powerful way. blueberries, for example, are one of my favorite superfoods, I call them a superfood because they offer such high density nutrition. I eat blueberries by the pound. I spend a couple hundred dollars a month on blueberries. They are potent medicine; they lower LDL cholesterol even better than statin drugs, with no negative side effects. They have other benefits, such as the protection of the nervous system, protection of eye health, fighting of free radicals and so on. |

When was the last time the FDA ever allowed the claim that blueberries reduce LDL cholesterol? You'll never see that claim because the blueberry companies aren't going to engage in the corruption, bribery, and political influence that would normally be required for the FDA to approve something. blueberries are just blueberries. They are straight from nature. They are healthy. And they actually lower bad cholesterol and improve cardiovascular health regardless of whether or not the FDA allows such a claim. |

Fold in the 1/4 cup blueberries with a spoon or spatula.
Spray nonstick canola oil spray on a griddle pan or other flat-bottomed nonstick fry pan and heat over medium-high heat.
Drop a generous ladle of batter onto the griddle and cook until an occasional bubble appears, about 1 minute. Flip and cook until light brown and puffy. Place on a plate and set into the oven to stay warm while you finish cooking remaining pancakes.
Serve with fresh blueberries, if desired.

While you're at it, by the way, you could chew on some wholesome nuts like almonds, cashews or my favorite: macadamia nuts.

In an earlier study, we showed that blueberries were effective in attenuating the production of these inflammatory mediators in LPS-activated murine BV2 microglia [263]. To extend these findings, we also examined a purified extract of blueberries (post-C18) and showed a suppression in the LPS-induced increases in iNOS, p38 MAPK, and NF-kB in the BV2 mouse microglial cells.

We know that high-fiber foods, and the pectin found in apples, will lower cholesterol. blueberries are very good at this, too. Hot grain cereals, such as oats, barley, and buckwheat are also good. Therefore, having some apples and blueberries in your cereal is exceptionally helpful. Other anticholesterol foods are polyunsaturated oils (in small amounts only!) and linoleic oils from cold fish (but do not eat shellfish), walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, and nut butters. |
