This is best measured by a blood test that looks at glycosylated hemoglobin, or HbAlC. This reflects levels of blood sugar over four weeks or so, rather than simply at the moment of the blood test.
Folic Acid/Folate
Although the terms are used interchangeably, strictly speaking, folic acid is the form found in supplements, while folate is found in foods. Most evidence suggests that folic acid is more bioavailable than folate, so with folic acid from supplements, you get more bang for your nutritional buck. |

Blood tests are helpful in detecting the body's reaction (antibodies) to gluten or as an indication of intestinal damage. The blood test that can give a strong indication of celiac disease analyzes tissue transglutaminase IgA levels along with reticulin and endomysial IgA antibodies. A positive result in this test also gives an indication of an inherited susceptibility to gluten intolerance. Other blood tests can be used to identify deficiencies of iron, vitamins such as folic acid, or minerals such as calcium. |

Hidden blood test
Most doctors rely upon the fecal occult (hidden) blood test to detect colon cancer. This is a test where a stool sample is placed on a chemically treated card or wipe and a chemical developer is poured on top. If the card or wipe turns to a blue color, this is an indication there is blood in the stool. Colon tumors usually bleed and small, otherwise undetectable, blood in the stool can be a sign of colon of cancer. Dark stools are another overt sign. Fresh blood in the anus usually is from hemorrhoids. |

Case Study: The blood test on StarLink s protein was flawed
Just five weeks after the FDA/CDC declared StarLink safe, based on the blood tests, advisers to the EPA—including some of the nation's leading food allergists—released a thorough critique of the FDA's allergy test and other aspects of the StarLink investigation.Their conclusion? "The test, as conducted, does not eliminate StarLink Cry9C as a potential cause of allergic symptoms."218 They said the research had many shortcomings. |

Only 1 percent of it is in the blood, so a blood test for magnesium deficiency is pretty useless.
Stress and Cardiovascular Health
Too much stress causes magnesium to be depleted, which can lead to hypertension, coronary artery constriction, arrhythmias, and heart attack. Here's how it works: When you're under too much stress your body overproduces substances called catecholamines. |
| A blood test called a PSA (for prostate-specific antigen) is a good idea. Though the test is hardly conclusive for cancer, PSA is frequently elevated in the blood of men with prostate cancer.
Other Helpful Supplements
Although saw palmetto is the superstar nutrient for "curing" all-night bathroom breaks, four other supplements have also been found to be helpful. Pygeum is an extract from the bark of an African tree and is approved in at least three countries in Europe as a BPH remedy. It relieves symptoms of BPH and contains at least three types of compounds that help the prostate. |
| Triglycerides are the main form of fat found in the body and are nearly always measured on a standard blood test.
Fish oil supplements reduce triglyceride levels by up to 40 percent in some research, an astonishingly high amount. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (the research arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) analyzed 123 studies on omega -3 fatty acids and concluded that "omega-3 fatty acids demonstrated a consistently large, significant effect on triglycerides—a net decrease of 10 to 33 percent. |

This suggests that, over time, scientists may be able to develop a blood test that could help them to identify the earliest changes that represent MS and aid in speeding up diagnosis as well as treatment. Other breakthroughs in MS diagnostics include a recent Yale study in which investigators isolated several newly recognized antibodies that were shown to interact with a form of myelin found in MS and state-of-the-art eye exams that use four different tests to find abnormalities in the retina and damage to optic-nerve fibers, often the spot where MS damage first occurs. |

He examined her and ran some tests, including the fecal occult blood test (FOBT). Surprised when one of the tests came back positive, this doctor recommended a colonoscopy. He also assured Sarah there was no risk to the procedure.
In recent years, colonoscopy has become the standard procedure for detecting cancer or precancerous polyps in the colon. Colonoscopy is an invasive procedure, requiring sedation while a flexible, tubular instrument is inserted into the colon. |

Blood Tests
Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin blood test is used to diagnose Grave's disease. Anti-thyroid peroxidase and antithyroglobulin antibodies are used to diagnose Hashimoto's thyroiditis.4
Calcitonin
Calcitonin levels are measured to diagnose medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. This is a very rare condition and need not be ordered on a routine thyroid test.
Thyroid Scan
A thyroid scan is good to rule out thyroid nodules. Thyroid scan presents diffuse trace uptake in Grave's disease and non-diffuse in toxic multinodular goiter. |

Thickening of blood as measured by Hematocrit
The Hematocrit is the volume of red blood cells in one liter of whole blood and can be determined by a simple and inexpensive blood test. If it is above 42 percent, the risk of a heart attack increases. A healthy person has a Hematocrit of 35 to 40 percent. Under the assumption that the presence of larger quantities of protein in the blood is harmless, many doctors consider a volume of 44-50 percent to still be in the normal range. |

The FSH blood test may be used to determine menopausal status.
Other methods of inducing menopause include chemotherapy, medications, or pelvic radiation therapy, which causes the ablation of ovarian function. Women who have been treated with chemotherapy may go into menopause either temporarily or permanently. About 30 percent of these women will have a return of their menses sometime within the first year. Irradiation of the pelvic or abdominal area can also induce menopause. |
| Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect endometriomas, cost prevents widespread use. A blood test called a CA-125 can have positive results in endometriosis. The problem is that a high CA-125 cannot completely differentiate endometriosis from uterine fibroids, cancerous growths, and normal tissue. High levels of CA-125 have been found in stages III and IV of endometriosis, which are the diagnoses for more advanced endometriosis.9 The CA-125 test may, however, help in monitoring treatment and progression once endometriosis has been confirmed. |

This "disease" is pure fiction, and there is absolutely no blood test, no MRI, no lab test, nothing to diagnose ADHD other than the opinion of someone who most likely earns kickbacks from Big Pharma.
Nearly all pharmaceuticals receiving FDA approval today have been tested on only a few thousand people for a very short period of time (as little as six weeks in some cases). Yet, from such limited testing, the FDA declares the drugs to be safe for everyone, even for long-term use, without a shred of evidence that such long-term use is safe. |

Vitamin C: Another important component for full post-operative recovery is vitamin C. According to the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, levels of this vital compound actually drop in burn victims, post-op patients, and other victims of physical trauma. The minimum required intake of vitamin C to maintain healthy bodily function is about 300mg to 1g per day following surgery or other procedures. |

The defining characteristic of prediabetes is an elevated blood glucose level, and that can be identified only through a blood test (see chapter 4). Because prediabetes is an insidious condition that progresses slowly over years, many people are surprised when, after getting a fasting blood glucose test, their doctors tell them they have type 2 diabetes. "How did that happen?" they often ask. The usual way—slowly and progressively over time. Identifying prediabetes allows people an opportunity to take steps to significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. |

Although a second follow-up blood test didn't confirm as high a level of those autoantibodies, nevertheless, Spyropoulos told Jan, "I think it fits. Your body is certainly acting like you have APS." In 2003, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome was a recently discovered disease; physicians had only known of its existence for twenty years. "There may be other antibodies involved that we don't yet understand or know how to test for," he admitted to Jan. "But that doesn't mean that we can't name and treat your disease."

That meant moving from the realm of giving medications to sick people to giving medications to people who looked well but might be at an increased risk based on the result of a blood test or some other hidden marker of disease. Thus the era of disease prevention and risk-factor modification was born.
To promote this shift, for the past two decades the pharmaceutical industry has pushed educational programs, which it claims are designed to identify people in need of treatment or prevention with medication. |

Here are some precautions you can take to minimise allergic asthma: žCheck your diet—eat preservative-, chemical- and additive-free foods žUse allergen-proof bedding. All sheets, pillows and blankets should be of a natural material,- avoid polyester as your body warmth will release its hydrocarbons, which may cause problems. Vacuum mattresses frequently and don't store anything under your bed. žAn electric blanket has positive and negative factors. |

He finally saw a specialist who ordered a blood test called
ANA (antinuclear antibody). Mart's ANA came back positive at a level of 1:640 (normal is 1:40 or less). His specialist told him that he had systemic lupus erythematosus, or what most people simply refer to as lupus.

| Or better yet, has your doctor ever recommended a blood test to check your personal homocysteine level? Probably not. After reading this chapter I guarantee you will wonder why. Few people have ever heard of this substance, and fewer still realize that it poses just as great a threat as cholesterol when it comes to cardiovascular disease.
It is estimated that by itself, an elevated homocysteine level in the blood is responsible for approximately 15 percent of all the heart attacks and strokes in the world today—that means 225,000 heart attacks and 24,000 strokes each year in the U.S. |
| One such highly preferred blood test is the highly sensitive C-Reactive Protein (hs CRP). This test measures the arterial inflammation currently present. This test is actually a better predictor of who is going to develop heart disease than a cholesterol level is. Why shouldn't it be? In fact doing highly sensitive CRPs allows the physician to identify those patients who have normal cholesterol levels and may still be at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. |
| He ran a blood test called a CA 125, which is a cancer marker for gynecological cancers and bowel cancers. Kymberly's marker was extremely high, and surgery was scheduled right away.
At age twenty-one, Kymberly had ovarian cancer. This being an unusual disease for such a young woman, the diagnosis caught her and her family totally off guard. After surgery the surgeon was quite optimistic that he had removed it all. He wanted to take every precaution, however, and requested that Kymberly see the oncologist. |
| I drew a blood sugar blood test for Matt, and it came back at 590, a level so dangerously high I admitted him to the hospital and started immediate infusion of intravenous insulin. When his blood sugar did not respond well to this treatment, I consulted an endocrinologist. This physician also had problems controlling Matt's diabetes and ended up giving him higher doses of insulin than he had ever given a patient before. At one point Matt was taking ninety units of insulin twice a day (a normal dose is approximately ten). |
