It's interesting to note that, just as it blocks the ultraviolet rays that give us a suntan, sunblock also blocks the ultraviolet rays we need to make vitamin D. Australia recently embarked on an anti-skin cancer campaign it called "Slip-Slop-Slap."The campaign was especially effective at producing unintended results—Australian sun exposure went down, and Australian vitamin D deficiencies went up.
On the flip side, researchers have discovered that tanning can actually help people who have vitamin D deficiencies. |

Amino Acids and Other Supplements
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and proteins are, in turn, the building blocks of the body. Of the 22 amino acids vital to the body's growth, development, and maintenance, some can be manufactured in the body while others, called essential amino acids, must be obtained from the diet or nutritional supplements. Semi-essential amino acids can be made by the body in amounts that are adequate to maintain basic protein requirements; however, additional dietary sources are required during times of growth or stress. |

Sunscreen with an SPF as low as 8 blocks almost 98 percent of UVB rays, which makes it practically impossible to make vitamin D if you wear sunscreen.
Where you sit or stand matters, too. You can't make vitamin D sitting next to a window in your home, your office, and your car because most modern glass technology blocks most UVB light. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves and you get no D either.
If casual sun exposure is defined as fifteen minutes of sun, three times a week year round, let's see how that fits into forty-eight days. |

A situation such as this causes acute and abrupt total closure of this artery, which blocks the blood flow to that part of the heart. Potentially dangerous plaques are often small and may not even cause significant narrowing of the artery—making a diagnosis of heart disease difficult prior to the rupture of a plaque. (You can see now why this disease is so silent and unsuspected until the plaque ruptures and actually blocks the artery.) Oxidative stress may also cause the breakdown of these plaques, which eventually leads to their rupture. |

UVB Being indoors and/or behind glass windows Clothing, especially head-to-toe for cultural or environmental reasons Darkly pigmented skin
Impairment of skin synthesis of vitamin D with age Sunscreen use (SPF 8 or greater)
No synthesis
No synthesis if fabric blocks UVB. Some cloth is loosely woven and does permit UVB through.
More sun exposure time is needed than person with little pigment More sun exposure time needed compared to younger person Sun protection factor (SPF) indicates amount of UV blocked: SPF blocks at 1/SPF. E.g., SPF of 8 would allow 1/8 (-12%) of UV to penetrate. |

Early in the last century, atoms were thought to be the fundamental building blocks of matter. Each type of atom represents a different chemical element, and chemists had accumulated a colossal amount of data on the properties of the elements and their interactions with one another. Ninety-two different elements were known at the time—a bit too many, you might say, for the fundamental building blocks. Thankfully, the work of the Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev in the late nineteenth century revealed some regularity in this mountain of data. |

The approved drug is sitagliptin (Januvia), which targets DPP-4, an enzyme that blocks the signals your body sends to balance high blood glucose levels. When a DPP-4 inhibitor blocks this enzyme, it prolongs the blood levels of GLP-1, which in turn causes the cascade of beneficial effects similar to the GLP-1 mimetic Byetta (exenatide). |

In addition, kava blocks sodium and calcium ion channels in neural tissue and thereby alters potassium potentials.47 Abnormally elevated potassium levels may induce heightened nervous and electrical sensitivity and increase mucosal sensitivity in patients with IC. Kava may help to reduce this effect by altering the potassium channel activity. In addition, IC has been reported to be aggravated by stress49-50 and associated with panic disorder,51 two conditions that may be ameliorated by kava.52

One of the building blocks of ATP is a form of sugar called D-ribose. Although it is found in small amounts in red meat, most of it is made in the body. When there is insufficient blood flow or oxygen supply, we can't make enough D-ribose to generate energy. The solution is to take D-ribose as a supplement.
D-ribose can boost heart function in those with coronary artery disease, hypertension, and those on statins. It also is useful for treating fibromyalgia, where there are pains all over due to lack of oxygen in the muscles and surrounding tissue. |

According to a company press release, it took two decades for researchers to develop a diet Slurpee by combining artificial sweeteners with undigestible sugar alcohols.) So when the grape dumps water at the first sign of frost, it's actually protecting itself in two ways—first, by reducing water volume; and second, by raising the sugar concentration of the water that remains. And that allows the grape to withstand colder temperature without freezing.

Proteins, in school biology, are described as the building blocks of life. But they are flexible entities that change their shape, and therefore their function, under a bewildering array of circumstances. When an egg is boiled, for example, and the white solidifies, that is because the protein, albumin, has changed structure with the heat.
Mostly, we can't detect the changes, but it is understood there are around 100,000 proteins in the human body. Unlike genes, which consist of different combinations of four bases, proteins are made from 20 amino acid building blocks. |

Because these fatty acids are the building blocks of hormones and "minihormones" called eicosanoids (also called prostaglandins), which literally control dozens of metabolic processes in the body that need to be in balance in order for us to stay healthy. For example, some of these prostaglandins control inflammation, some are anti-inflammatory. Some control clotting, some control flow. It's not that they are "good" or "bad"—but that they need to be in balance. |

Second, laboratory research has shown that lysine has antiviral activity that blocks arginine7 and that an arginine-deficient environment suppresses HSV replication.8
Thus, theoretically, reducing one's intake of arginine and increasing one's intake of lysine should be effective in reducing HSV replication. In fact, many people do observe an increased susceptibility to outbreaks if they eat chocolate or peanuts, foods that are high in arginine. Other high-arginine foods include almonds, cashews, and sunflower seeds. |

Provera*, being a foreign substance to the body, blocks the body's receptors for progesterone. Furthermore, since it is a foreign substance, the body has a difficult time detoxifying Provera . The end result is a whole host of serious adverse effects such as irreversible osteoporosis. Instead of putting Depo-Provera in the 'black box', the FDA should remove it from the market.

How carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are used by our bodies we have thousands of amino acids, unattached and unbound, ready for use by the body as the building blocks of tissue.
Because there are so many individual enzymes, they are categorized by the type of chemical reaction they catalyze. Although there are many different categories, the most important categories in terms of digestion and enzyme therapy are proteases, lipases, and carbohydrases. Each of these categories plays a specific role metabolically and digestively. |

Well, if a vitamin necessary for life is not found in abundance in the diet, an organism can usually manufacture it out of molecular building blocks. Because cows and other animals, but not plants, make B]2 in large quantities, we get it in our diet and no longer need to make our own. Likewise, most animals manufacture their own vitamin C, but humans don't. We can surmise that plants high in vitamin C were so abundant in our early diet that we simply lost the need for that genetic code-or, more accurately, it is just not "turned on." Why give up a potentially useful gene sequence? |

D despite the fact that their skin blocks all those ultraviolet rays, you're asking the right questions. Remember, ultraviolet rays that penetrate the skin destroy folate—and ultraviolet rays that penetrate the skin are necessary to create vitamin D.
Dark skin evolved to protect folate, but it didn't evolve with a switch—you can't turn it off when you need to whip up a batch of vitamin D. |
| B-cells are the basic building blocks for antibodies. When we need to produce a specific antibody, B-cells seek out the instructions for that antibody in their DNA, although the individual lines of instruction are usually mixed in with instructions for other antibodies. They snip away the lines of instruction for other antibodies and sew the rest back together, essentially rewriting their own genetic code and producing a specialized product in the process. This is called V(D)J recombination, named after the regions where the genes that are used in this seek-snip-and-sew trick are found. |

It is essential for metabolism. Without protein, you would die. (The same is not true of dietary carbohydrate, but that's a whole different story. |

This binding process blocks the progesterone receptor from binding progesterone. It effectively makes the body deficient in progesterone. This deficiency of progesterone, coupled with the blocking of its receptors is responsible for all of the serious adverse effects from ProveraR.
The use of a synthetic progesterone derivative such as Provera?provides the body with two major problems:
1. Provera?binds to the progesterone receptor. This makes the receptor unable to bind progesterone and leads to a progesterone deficiency.

Sugary and high-carb foods also shortchange the brain of building blocks to make calming, stress-buffering nutrients.
An increase in Cortisol, the body's main stress hormone, tends to occur in tandem with a rise in insulin. For example, a lack of sleep boosts Cortisol levels that, along with insulin, promote the formation of belly fat. Furthermore, as Cortisol levels go up, the hormone DHEA
(dehydroepiandrosterone) tends to go down. DHEA, often considered an anti-aging hormone, is a precursor to our steroid hormones (including testosterone and estrogen), which decline with age. |

If we try to ease the symptoms of a cold or flu by taking medications, this blocks toxin elimination and interferes with the natural healing the body is carrying out. The body must then use extra energy to deal with the additional stress introduced by any drug taken. Cleansing is reduced and sometimes even stopped when the elimination of the toxic drug becomes a higher priority. When this happens, toxins are left in storage in various tissues, setting the stage for a more serious disease at a later time. The body does not have drug deficiencies; health cannot be forced on the body. |
| When the "sewer system" of the body is sluggish and inefficient, it also blocks the removal of toxins from other parts of the body, such as the liver, glands, and lymphatic system, causing them to become congested. Toxic wastes are then stored in the tissues. Over time this results in autointoxication, self-poisoning by toxic substances generated within the body. Dr. Bernard Jensen makes this very clear:
The colon is a sewage system, but by neglect and abuse it becomes a cesspool. |
| Vitamins, minerals and amino acids are the building blocks of life and the body can eliminate any surplus of them without any problems.24
Much of the Codex agenda with regards to natural health supplements is now law in parts of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Codex dietary supplement rules are in effect in Norway and Germany. When we strip away all the research and studies, the clinical experiences and case histories, we are always left with one fundamental, inescapable fact: what we eat provides the biochemical building blocks for our entire bodies. Eating mostly nutritious foods creates a strong foundation and frame, leading to good health and resistance to disease. Eating poor-quality junk foods, however, is comparable to building a house with a shoddy foundation and frame. |
