NIGHT BLINDNESS
SIGN OF THE TIMES
Night blindness can gradually creep up on us, making it increasingly difficult to see what lurks in the dark, creepy or otherwise. Not seeing well in the dark—medically known as nyctalopia—is yet another normal, annoying sign of aging.
Night blindness is also a common sign of a cataract. And it's one of the earliest warning signs of vitamin A (retinol) deficiency, which can lead to very dry corneas and retinal damage. |

This preventable childhood blindness results from a lack of vitamin A in the cornea of the eye. The cornea is the transparent outer layer of the eye.
This type of childhood blindness is known as xerophthalmia. In the first stage of xeropthalmia, the cornea becomes hard and dry, a condition known as xerosis. Xerosis can progress to a softening of the cornea that can lead to irreversible blindness.

These headaches are preceded by a slowly expanding area of blindness surrounded by a sparkling edge; these symptoms can affect up to one-half of the field of vision of each eye. The blindness may resolve after twenty minutes, and is often followed by a severe one-sided headache with nausea, vomiting, hypersensitivity to light, and hypersensitivity to sound. Other temporary neurological symptoms, such as weakness on one side, may also occur.
Migraine sufferers usually develop their own coping mechanisms for intractable pain. |

The leading cause of blindness in adults under the age of sixty is diabetic retinopathy, caused by complications of long-term diabetes. But the leading cause of adult blindness and vision loss in adults over sixty is something called macular degeneration. And a few simple supplements can significantly reduce the risk of your ever getting it.
You may recall from high school biology that the retina contains two types of photoreceptors—cones and rods. |

Another rare complication of Viagra is blindness. This is caused by a condition called nonarteric anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION is caused when a blood vessel is blocked by a blood clot or atherosclerosis. Similar problems elsewhere in the body lead to heart attacks and strokes. But when the blood vessel leads to the optic nerve, vision loss or blindness in the eye can be the result. The FDA has received fifty or so case reports of the drug having causing NAION. This condition often clears by itself with time. |

Blindness: Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among adults. þKidney disease: Diabetes is the leading reason why people need to go on dialysis, accounting for 43 percent of new cases. þNervous system disease: About 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of nervous system damage. Severe forms of diabetic nerve disease are a major contributing cause of lower-extremity amputations. þAmputations: More than 60 percent of lower-limb amputations in the United States occur among people with diabetes. |

Previous research had already found that the "degree of blindness" is a major determinant of study results.38 Even previous studies of antidepressants had found that "the degree of blindness is crucial... the blinder the study participants are to who is getting the active drug and who is getting the placebo, the more modest the advantage for antidepressants becomes [emphasis mine]."39 That was the conclusion of an analysis of 22 antidepressant studies which controlled for degree of blindness. |

When doctors and health experts talk about the health problems associated with prediabetes, diabetes, and overweight, people often have trouble imagining the horrible consequences; for example, diabetes can result in blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, and amputation. So let's take a different approach and consider how you look and feel today. Some of the early symptoms of prediabetes are so common that many people assume they're normal. These signs of prediabetes fall into four groupings.

You may recall from high school biology that the retina contains two types of photoreceptors—cones and rods. Cones are the ones that provide color sensitivity, and most of them are located in the central area of the retina in a structure called the macula. |
| So when the macula "degenerates," you're in trouble—color vision and vision sharpness both deteriorate significantly, and in the worst case scenario, you can be looking at blindness (excuse the pun!).
The cause of macular degeneration is not really known, but it's believed that there is an insufficient disposal of waste materials from the cells. Cell waste is normally carried off, but in this case some is left behind and it blocks the light. Essential vision decreases; you always have peripheral vision, but you lose your central vision. |

After the war, they suffered to an exaggerated degree from all the diseases of aging, including arthritis, blindness, heart disease, neurological deterioration, and depression. Dr Hoffer estimated that one year in a Japanese POW camp aged these soldiers about 5 years, as compared to a normal year living at home. A soldier imprisoned in such a camp at chronological age 35 would come out 4 years later with a biological age of 55.
Former prisoners of war began to suffer predictably after their release. |

And don't forget about the possibility of blindness, kidney disease or having one of your limbs lopped off via amputation. This disease, like many others, is mostly a man-made disease that is a result of a fundamental lack of understanding about nutrition and the benefits of physical activity.
The obesity problem is real, and unless we are content with gaining weight and afflicting ourselves with diseases that put lives at risk, we need a dramatic change in how we view our eating habits and our physical activity. |

And that scientific blindness played a subtle part in why, for seven years, no physician suspected that LaShekia had lupus—even though her history so clearly pointed to both a viral and chemical overload.
What Harley and James were able to do by first isolating that "smoking gun"—that Sm B protein sequence targeted by lupus patients' antibodies—was to demonstrate, on the smallest cellular level, that the body can be tricked into attacking itself. Their research was a dramatic example of molecular mimicry at work between a protein in a virus and a protein in the body. |

At the same time that managed care began to abandon capitation and loosen some of its restrictions, patients seemed to become even more demanding. They had seen the stories about patients who were refused needed care. |

Today, the sun is considered the main culprit for causing skin cancer, certain cataracts leading to blindness, and aging of the skin. Only those who take the "risk" of exposing themselves to sunlight find that the sun makes them feel better, provided they don't use sunscreens or burn their skin. The UV-rays in sunlight actually stimulate the thyroid gland to increase hormone production, which in turn increases the body's basal metabolic rate. This assists both in weight loss and improved muscle development. |
