BLADDER CANCER: In a study of 130 bladder cancer patients and an equal number of control subjects, those who had consumed kale regularly had a lower risk for bladder cancer.
Tips on Using Kale
SELECTION AND STORAGE:
• Smaller leaves are milder-flavored. Choose deeply colored leaves for tenderness and optimum flavor.
• Avoid dry, wilted, and limp leaves. Tiny holes in the leaves may be an indication of insect damage.
• Keep unwashed kale in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator crisper. Place a damp paper towel in the bag to keep moist. Cook it within a few days of purchase. |

CANCER TREATMENTS
Cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence; in fact, most people diagnosed with cancer do not die, and the probability of a complete cure or extended survival is continually improving as scientists and physicians have a growing knowledge and understanding of cancer. For example, 89 percent of people survive skin cancer, 95 percent survive thyroid cancer, and 16 percent survive lung cancer. |
| BLADDER CANCER
Approximately 50,000 new cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed annually, with four times as many men as women falling victim to the disease. Environmental factors play a role in cancer of the bladder, with cases much more common in cigarette smokers and industrial workers (including the dye, chemical, leather, and rubber industries). Polyphenols may mitigate some of the harmful effects of tobacco use. |

His boss at the university lab told him that DuPont workers had no bladder cancer at the time. Hueper replied, "Well, that may be, but they will get them."1
In 1933, as the economic depression spread, Hueper was broke and feared that he was about to become unemployed. At the same time, Germany had begun investing heavily in institutions to study and prevent cancer. In desperation, Hueper put his furniture in storage in Philadelphia, cashed in his life insurance policy and traveled with his young wife back to Germany to try to find a job. |

The researchers were able to determine that women who were exposed to chlorinated water had a 48 percent increased risk of bladder cancer, a 38 percent increased risk of rectal cancer, a 90 percent increased risk of esophageal cancer and an 11 percent increased risk of breast cancer. Men were not affected as much as women. Adding chlorine to drinking water causes a chemical reaction that results in the formation of a cocktail of carcinogens. |
| The same amount of water can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79 percent and the risk of bladder cancer by 50 percent.
Warning about plastic bottles: Try to stay away from water or other beverages contained in plastic bottles, especially the soft types. Many people now have large numbers of phthalates (plasticizers used to make plastic flexible; also used in the cosmetics industry) accumulated in their body. Plastic products are water and fat-soluble. |

Honey was found to be an effective agent for inhibiting the growth of bladder cancer cell lines.
WOUND-HEALING: Honey has long been revered for its antibacterial and wound-healing properties. A special preparation of honey called Medihoney, known for its high antibacterial properties, was used in treating wound care in Children's Hospital in Bonn, Germany, for three years. Researchers observed significant reductions in even the most resistant wound infections as a result of using the honey preparation. |

Rarely, bladder cancer may be the cause if blood in the urine is present.
The diagnosis of IC is based upon the presenting signs and symptoms. A good medical history, physical exam, and tests are done to determine the cause of the symptoms. A cystoscopy or intravesical potassium sensitivity test may be recommended. Once the diagnosis of IC has been made, either with certainty or as a possibility, treatment can proceed. |

Inadequate water intake has been correlated with increased rates of bladder cancer because of the longer time that the bladder may be exposed to potential carcinogens.
One half-gallon to one gallon is a reasonable range of liquids for most people to drink each day. Hard work in the hot sun greatly increases water needs. Coffee,

After these attacks, Hueper was officially barred by the NCI from conducting studies of human risk of bladder cancer from aromatic amines, and he was forbidden to finish the work he had begun with other researchers on chromates, beryllium and other cancer-causing agents in the workplace.
His fate at Haskell played out again at the NCI. Hueper was told to focus solely on experimental animals and stay away from workers. The argument continued to be that there is no convincing evidence of human harm from these exposures. |
| By 1930 the high risk of bladder cancer among those who worked regularly with such dyes was clear enough that Germany and Switzerland officially agreed to pay dye workers who developed such cancers—making this one of the first formally compensable occupational illnesses.3 Germany also devised workplace rules allowing only older workers to work with certain cancer-causing materials—on the theory that these older men would die soon enough after their employment ended that cancer was not an issue. |
| A quarter century later the NCI found that citizens of Salem County, home to the Chambers Works, had the highest rate of bladder cancer in the nation.32
Hueper's pamphlet ended with a clear set of proposals for a program of cancer control that, except for his views on tobacco, remains pertinent today. |
| The program includes eliminating carcinogenic agents from industrial, civilian and military use whenever practical; instituting safety procedures for the handling of suspect materials; and providing careful medical monitoring of exposed workers for early signs
Figure 4-2 A diagram byWilhelm Hueperjrom the National Cancer Institute, 1950, depicted incidence of bladder cancer among industry workers and predicted community risks. of cancerous and precancerous conditions. |
| First, they can feign blindness by refusing to see or record cases, as DuPont did with bladder cancer at Chambers Works after 1936. Second, they can create negative evidence by only counting disease in workers who have been employed a short period of time and excluding from their records those with long-term exposure who are neither working nor alive. Or they can pack the study population with many workers who have no exposure to the agent being examined, thereby diluting evidence of an effect. Finally, they can suppress or delay publishing the results. |

There is promising success with bladder cancer, infertility-causing endometriosis, advanced lung and esophageal cancers, skin cancer, and diseases leading to blindness, psoriasis, and autoimmune disorders. In one study, light therapy eliminated 79 percent of early lung cancers. Regular exposure to sunlight still seems to be one of the best measures one can take to prevent cancer, including cancers of the skin.
Now Even Doctors and Scientists Say, "It's Not True!"
Like myself, there have always been some health practitioners who didn't buy into the theory that the sun causes deadly diseases. |

From 1900 to 1976, reviewers have recorded 176 cases of spontaneous, unexplainable remissions from cancer in the medical literature. [National Cancer Institute Monograph 44: 5-9, 1976]
There may be more spontaneous remissions from cancer than reported. One physician reported four such cases in his office practice alone. |
| These men aren't likely to be fully informed that proton beam radiation, as well as conventional external beam x-ray treatment, carries with it an increased risk for bladder cancer. Bladder or urethral cancer is detected 2.75 years sooner after a proton beam boost to conventional radiation treatment than with standard radiation therapy alone. About 30-45% of men who do not undergo radiation treatment of any kind will develop urinary tract cancer compared to 64% receiving conventional or conventional/proton beam therapy. |

| Cancer 62: 326-30, 1988] High HA serum levels have also been found in Wilms tumor and in bladder cancer. [Annals Medicine 28: 241-53, 1996]
If the HA breaks down due to exposure to radiation, either x-ray, gamma ray or solar radiation, or due to viral or bacterial infection, or inflammation, then the connective tissue loses its consistency and any existing tumors cells can use the slipperiness of the watery HA to travel to distant locations. For example, the recurrence rate for colon cancer after an operation increases from 20 to 80 % as the levels of HA increase in cancer cells. |

Isoflavonones (genistein, genistin, daidzein, and biochanin A) also inhibit growth of murine and human bladder cancer cell lines by inducing cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and angiogenesis (Zhou et al., 1998).
