The Secret History of the War on Cancer

Today we know that the gene pool of black americans is more similar to that of white Americans than to that of blacks in many different parts of Africa or the Caribbean.42 But in those days, thinking about skin color and genes was guided by simplistic notions. A second complication was that while life is a mixture for all of us, it was especially so for coke oven workers. Their exposures were hardly limited to simple solitary agents but involved complex mists, fumes and chemicals.

New England Journal Medicine 352: 1977-84, 2005] Questions to ask your doctor The American Cancer Society (ACS) says the death rate from prostate cancer is at an all-time low for both white and black americans — and a new study suggests that a primary reason may be increased use of the PSA blood test to find prostate cancer early. Prostate cancer incidence rates rose from 1986 - when the PSA test was approved -through 1991, with African-American trends mirroring rates for white men a year or so later. Then after 1991, death rates for white and black men began to drop sharply.

Race-based medicine misses the point: skin pigmentation impacts health and chronic disease

The only thing black americans need is good advice about disease prevention that encourages them to get plenty of natural sunlight on their skin on a regular basis. Black Americans who live in northern cities will even experience tremendous health benefits from visiting tanning salons. I realize this statement has dermatologists and most physicians aghast in disbelief, since we have all been brainwashed into believing that ultraviolet light is somehow deadly. "Lookout! It's the sun! Run for your life!

The book also addresses the epidemic vitamin and mineral deficiency in the United States and explains why black americans suffer from the highest disease and mortality rates due to these deficiencies. The book is available at www.eureamerica. net. Highly recommended. What People Are Saying In October 1996 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy. In October of that year I started following Robert Barefoot's calcium regime. In July 1997 I had another prostate biopsy in which no evidence of malignancy was found.

Race-based medicine misses the point: skin pigmentation impacts health and chronic disease

The development of heart drugs for black americans. A recent study of black americans suffering from cardiovascular disease showed remarkable improvements in their survival rate when given a drug known as BiDil. Naturally, all sorts of ethical questions have been raised by the discussion of race-based medicines, but none of these discussions reveal the obvious solution to enhancing the health of African-Americans -- a solution based precisely on the biological effect of skin pigmentation.
One recent editorial in USA Today ridiculously suggests that there are no differences between black americans and white Americans. While that is hopefully true in terms of job opportunities, mutual respect, and human nature, it is definitely not true in terms of basic physiology. A kindergarten student can tell you one obvious difference: skin color. Now, before you go calling me a racist, allow me to explain why skin pigmentation is, indeed, critical in understanding the different health challenges in black americans versus white Americans.

When divided along racial and ethnic lines, non-Hispanic black americans have the highest prevalence at 38.8 percent, while Mexican-Americans registered 28.7 percent, and non-Hispanic whites 27.2 percent. This study, reported in the journal Hypertension, did not examine potential reasons for these differences. However, investigators did cite the aging of the U.S. population and the growing proportion of overweight and obese Americans as potential contributors.

Now, before you go calling me a racist, allow me to explain why skin pigmentation is, indeed, critical in understanding the different health challenges in black americans versus white Americans. In my view, conventional medicine is doing a terrible job of educating people with darker skin pigmentation about the special care they need to take to get adequate amounts of natural sunlight. You see, darker skin pigmentation acts as a natural sunscreen.
Conventional medicine has universally failed to deliver this urgent message to black americans. Other studies show that black women suffer from more aggressive forms of breast cancer. Once again, it's no surprise: chronic vitamin D deficiency directly promotes breast cancer in women. And it is black women, once again, who are lacking vitamin D the most. This is where the cardiovascular disease study comes into the picture. Chronic vitamin D deficiency also reduces the body's ability to protect itself from cardiovascular disease.

Depending on the degree of lactose intolerance and the amount of dairy eaten, lactose-intolerant people may get symptoms of bloating, intestinal pain, gas, and diarrhea. black americans and Japanese are more likely to have milk intolerance than Caucasians because they have not genetically adapted to the use of dairy as have those with a long history of consuming it. In the form of yogurt, the lactose is broken down by the healthy lactic acid bacteria, and therefore yogurt is easier to digest. Milk, no matter if one has enough lactase to digest it, tends to produce mucus.

American black men have the highest prostate cancer rate in the world, fully two times more than white Americans, yet native Africans have very low rates of prostate cancer. And black americans die more frequently from almost all degenerative diseases at rates far higher than other groups. It doesn't have to be that way.

Asthma mortality increased by 45 percent between 1985 and 1995, with the death rate for black americans almost three times that of whites. Why this dramatic rise? Health officials are scrambling to find out. While many theories exist, increasingly experts are calling asthma a disease of civilization, because it's virtually unheard of in preindustrial societies. With increasing urbanization comes increasing incidence of asthma, typically more common in cities than in rural areas.

Americans consume tons of it every year! It is hidden in thousands of products. Many people are addicted to it. Sucrose is broken down in your intestines into glucose and fructose by the digestive enzyme sucrase.

Aging white Americans can point to excess poundage and deleterious health habits as the triggers for their blood pressure problems; and black americans can add genetic predisposition to the list. A blood pressure reading has two numerical components: The systolic figure, which always comes first, is the pressure that blood exerts on the walls of your arteries when your heart contracts. Diastolic refers to the pressure exerted between heartbeats, when your heart is taking a tiny rest. If the diastolic pressure is elevated, clearly your arteries never get a proper rest.
By the time black americans hit 50, they were experiencing signs of hypertension. Since the two populations shared certain racial characteristics, the divergence is probably attributable to lifestyle and environmental factors, such things as diet, exercise, smoking, and drinking habits. Lowering Blood Pressure Through Diet and Exercise Many people believe that a low-salt diet is the first line of defense against hypertension. However, only 10 percent of the general population are truly salt responsive in that their blood pressure responds to their intake of salt.

Greater reductions were also seen in black americans, compared with Caucasians. Better results were reported in hypertensives than in normotensives, but effects in the latter were sufficient to suggest that supplemental potassium may help significantly prevent hypertension. Studies have shown that diets high in potassium, magnesium and fiber reduce the risk of strokes. Other studies have reported an inverse relationship between potassium intake and stroke.
