Rethinking beta carotene
Just how could beta carotene, even in high doses, pose an increased risk for lung cancer among smokers when tobacco destroys beta carotene in blood plasma? Some researchers began to ponder if the widely reported risk was real.

So, to indicate the equivalent effect of a certain amount of beta carotene compared with vitamin A (retinol) beta-carotene is reported in IUs. This means that 10 IU of beta-carotene has more or less the same antioxidant effect of 10 IU of vitamin A. Not everybody converts beta-carotene to vitamin A with the same efficiency. Also, beta-carotene does not have the associated toxicity in excess. Therefore, it's best to both eat and supplement both. To work out your total equivalent vitamin A from supplements add up both the IU for vitamin A and beta-carotene in your supplements. |

As penicillin became so widely used for gram-positive infections, penicillin-resistant bacteria developed, including some that could break down the beta-lactam chemical structure of penicillin by producing an enzyme called beta lactamase. So what's a beta, and why would you want to block one anyway? What you're actually blocking when you take these drugs are beta receptors, which are found on cells all over your body—in your heart and your lungs and around the little muscles that surround blood vessels. When you block these receptors you make it harder for adrenaline (epinephrine) to stimulate the heart or other cells.

This study involved eighteen thousand smokers and asbestos workers who lived in Washington State. These patients received 15 mg of beta-carotene and 25,000 IU of straight vitamin A. Researchers monitored these patients over a four-year span, and again no decrease in the risk of cancer occurred in patients who were taking the supplements. |

Vitamin E is actually a family of eight compounds—four of them are tocopherols (alpha, gamma, beta, and delta) and four of them are tocotrienols (alpha, gamma, beta, and delta). (Most common vitamin E supplements are just alpha-tocopherol, and that's a whole different discussion.)
