But David Schubert points out, "Even extensive animal testing might not detect the consequences of deficiencies in beneficial plant products."98 In any case, extensive animal testing is not done for GM crops.
Beneficial compounds may change
A new science has emerged to study useful phytonutrients. A USDA Website reported, "On the cusp of the millennium, researchers are busily uncovering a host of beneficial compounds in plant foods... .They apparendy reduce risks of diseases of aging. |

Lindo concluded his account: 'I derived temporary relief from acupuncture, there is not the least doubt, and had I at the time, the advantage of country air, it is probable that a more beneficial result might have accrued... '.2I No miracle cure here, then, but after Lindo's unavailing round of treatments—including apparently, a caustic chemical rub that blistered him badly—his willingness to publicize a nearly painless, and at least temporarily beneficial, remedy is hardly surprising. |

Steaming prevents enzymes in the tea leaves from converting the beneficial polyphenols. To produce black tea, the leaves are simply dried and the beneficial polyphenols are allowed to oxidize and form larger complexes, known as tannins.
Green tea is one of the most important health promoting beverages you can drink. Regular green tea consumption is linked to a reduced risk for heart attacks and strokes as well as most forms of cancer, particularly breast and prostate cancer. |

Instead, she believed the genome directed its jumpers toward those places in the genome where mutations were most likely to have a beneficial effect. In other words, the dice were loaded for the corn's benefit—even if just a little bit.
The extent to which these jumping genes have fascinated scientists is evident in the names they have been given: gypsy, mtanga (Swahili for wanderer), Castaway, Evelknievel, and mariner. |

In addition, daily naps of between ten and forty-five minutes are noted to be very beneficial to health. However, napping longer than forty-five minutes can induce states of deep sleep that may be difficult to wake from; long naps can also interfere with the regular night sleep cycle. By adopting these habits, a person will have more restful sleep, feel more energized, and actually, may require one or two hours less sleep each night.5
ADEQUATE TIME TO ELIMINATE WASTES
The body needs adequate time to eliminate metabolic wastes. |

The other half of the cells in your body are bacterial cells, most of which are beneficial and inhabit your digestive system. To get a true count, you will need to decide if you want to include the cells of the 100 trillion microorganisms that call your eyeballs, mouth, nose, ears, skin, and other areas of your body home. Our bodies are actually vast ecosystems for these organisms, many of which we could not live without because they contribute to the vital functioning of our bodies.11
It only makes sense that with so many trillions of cells in our bodies, cells are indeed tiny things. |
| NES cavity theory suggests why this may be true, especially breathing sea air, for the sea spray would release many micronutrients and other beneficial elements into the air. It also suggests, contrary to popular opinion, that vitamin or mineral supplements may not be effective sources of these elements, for ingesting them bypasses the important cavities (lungs especially) that are bioenergetically important in how the body uses them.
In TCM, yuan qi, or the life-source energy, collects primarily in the brain, lungs, and kidneys—all of which are made of millions of microtubules. |
| In the case of e-smog, the Liver Driver and Energetic Star 1 (Lymphatic Immunity and General Radiation) Infoceuticals may also be beneficial, but the NES scan is the final indicator of what in the body-field needs to be corrected.
The Spleen-Omentum Driver is important because of its many bioenergetic links, especially to the thymus. |
| Looking back, Cass said that the emotional shifts she experienced were among the most beneficial effects of her NES therapy. She said, "The energy shift was phenomenal, but the emotional shift was as important. I was able to make my health and personal needs a priority, free from feelings of guilt and selfishness, something I had never been able to do before. Whereas before I had wondered how I would get through the day, now I couldn't wait to start a new day. Everything seemed possible that before had seemed impossible. |
| Hence, the Cell Driver Infoceutical and to some extent also the Source Driver Infoceutical are primary correctors for the bioenergetic links to arthritic conditions, although the Energetic Star 6 Infoceutical, described in the following section, may prove beneficial as well.
Additional NES research suggests that many childhood disorders may have bioenergetic ties to inflammatory responses provoked by viral infections or even live inoculations. |

Seal meat and fish are loaded with beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. The Masai in Africa, who subsist on milk and meat, have healthy hearts and don't suffer from excess inflammation.
The fats you eat are directly transformed into chemicals in your body. Some of those chemicals promote inflammation; others calm it. Most nut, seed, and vegetable oils—the oils used to make processed foods— are rich in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, which are almost always made into the chemicals that promote inflammation. |
| High homocysteine appears to reduce the production of nitric oxide, a beneficial chemical that plays a role in reducing blood pressure and opening blood vessels wider to allow more blood to pass through.
3. By affecting the "stickiness" of blood. When levels of clotting factors rise, blood becomes stickier and thicker and clots become more likely. Clots can then become lodged in narrowed blood vessels, triggering a heart attack or stroke.
4. By increasing levels of free radicals in the body. |
| Omega-3 fish oils: It may be beneficial to take fish oil supplements between doses of orlistat to replenish your body's levels of omega-3 fats; use a supplement that delivers 1,000-3,000 mg of combined DHA/EPA.
ANTIPSYCHOTICS
Drugs in this class are mostly prescribed to people who have schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other mental illnesses that involve breaks from reality. |
| The deeper the color, the more antioxidants and other beneficial phytochemicals you're getting. These foods also are rich in fiber that aids in digestion and carbohydrates that break down slowly for steady energy. Some even contain protein. • Eat three servings a day of top-quality protein foods such as fish, poultry, lean meat (free range), eggs, soy, or combinations of beans, lentils, and grains.
• Avoid hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats, and reduce your intake of saturated fats from meat, dairy products, and junk food.
• Choose low-GI/GL complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, and avoid sugar and refined foods.
• Eat fish three times a week, or take fish oil supplements.
• Use cold-pressed seed oils in salad dressings. |

Most scientists now believe that mitochondria were once independent, parasitic bacteria that evolved a mutually beneficial relationship with some of our pre-mammal evolutionary predecessors. Not only do these likely former bacteria live in almost all your cells, they even have their own inheritable DNA, called mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA.
Former bacteria aren't the only microbes we've married. Researchers now believe that as much as a third of your DNA is from viruses. |

Other seemingly beneficial developments have also had unexpected consequences. William Gross, managing director of PIMCO, noted in 2005: "Although financial innovation and derivative products allow for diversification and a spreading of risk across more market players, the increased liquidity has . .. allowed for increased leverage, quicker exits, and therefore more systemic, systemwide risk." Virtually all financial systems are pyramid-like structures built on a tenuous foundation of faith and trust. |

George Cleghorn, a Scottish army surgeon, is one of those credited with discovering the antimalarial properties of cinchona bark early in the nineteenth century, but it still took another century before French chemists isolated the specific beneficial compound—quinine—and made a medicinal tonic from it. The tonic tasted awful, though, so legend has it that British soldiers mixed their gin rations with their tonic treatments and presto, a classic was born. |

Again, exercise prolongs your life because it is stressful, not because it is beneficial in itself. I know it sounds crazy, but now you know the real reason exercise is "good" for you is that it's "bad" for you.
TAKING A BREAK
If you use some or all of the tools I've described in this chapter to induce hormesis, you'll arrive at a very interesting place. Remember Groundhog Day, the movie about a conceited local weatherman, played by Bill Murray, who relives February 2 seemingly forever in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania? He awakens every morning as if nothing he did the previous day had happened. |
| That's why only very dark chocolate, as indicated by 70 percent or more cocoa content, has a beneficial effect. Raw cocoa beans and non-Dutch processed cocoa also contain these polyphenols. You can add them to coffee to make mocha or even vegetable smoothies, stir-fries, and sauces. The ancient elixir of the Incas and Aztecs, mole sauce, was based on cocoa. Or try my recipes for dark cocoa smoothies and chocolate ice cream using raw cocoa nibs mixed with dark chocolate. Yum! |
| For example, without it beta-carotene can actually act as a dangerous pro-oxidant instead of a beneficial antioxidant. Animals that can manufacture vitamin C, which humans cannot, produce much more of it during times of stress and infection. When you are stressed, going from one time zone to another, undergoing an operation, experiencing a viral or bacterial infection, or just arguing with your spouse, dramatically increase your intake of vitamin C to bowel tolerance, which usually occurs at 6,000 to 10,000 mg per day. |
| To repopulate with beneficial bacteria, avoid those foods and take a probiotic that includes several of the normal bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. salvar-ius, and Bifidobacterium bifidum, in a growth-promoting medium like mal-todextrin.
Typical daily dose: Take capsules with at least 4 billion bacteria once a day for the first month of Diet Evolution, and whenever you are traveling or during and after you take antibiotics.
Equally important, these healthy bacteria need fertilizer in the form of prebi-otics. |
| The most beneficial are fructo-oligosaacharides, better known as FOS. Need help remembering their name? Just think of them as Friends of Steve (FOS); they'll soon be friends of yours! Some of the most common are inulin, derived from chicory, and yacon, an Andean root vegetable that is a cousin of the sunflower. Available powdered or as a syrup, yacon has the remarkable property of being sweet without being absorbed by the body as a sugar is. Other simple sugars that are not FOSs, but still are useful, are d-ribose, d-mannose, and xylitol. |

Many drugs can reduce your intake of beneficial nutrients by reducing your appetite, as with the stimulant drug Ritalin (methylphenidate), often prescribed for children. Some antidepressant drugs also tend to reduce food intake. On the flip side, a drug can reduce your nutritional status by increasing your appetite for unhealthy foods and causing you to gain weight, but without good nourishment. |

Vitamin E helps to maintain blood vessel flexibility, and a combination of vitamins E and C is particularly beneficial. Vitamin E also prevents the free-radical oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a very early step in the development of heart disease.
• Pycnogenol, 100 to 200 mg daily. This remarkable antioxidant can improve endothelial function, particularly when combined with L-arginine.
To reduce inflammation, take these supplements:

• Pycnogenol, 200 to 300 mg daily.
• Vitamin E, 400 IU daily of the natural form. |

I No miracle cure here, then, but after Lindo's unavailing round of treatments—including apparently, a caustic chemical rub that blistered him badly—his willingness to publicize a nearly painless, and at least temporarily beneficial, remedy is hardly surprising. Indeed one of the features most marked and discussed about acupuncture was that 'It would seem, that the operation is, as a general rule, most successful when it occasions the least pain.'22 The consumer appeal of this unusual attribute can be readily imagined... |
| Despite scoffing at homeopathy's 'imaginary treatment', Forbes carefully enumerated the beneficial effects of inter-system competition:
[I]t has tended directly to improve their practice, by augmenting their confidence in Nature's powers, and proportionately diminishing their belief in the universal necessity of Art, thus checking that unnecessary interference with the natural processes by the employment of heroic means, always so prevalent and so injurious. |
| I know to be certainly beneficial, and impossible to be injurious, for any new plan; but where there is great uncertainty, or where, though medicine may be applicable to the disease it may be of a nature to injure the constitution, there I should feel authorised, with close watchfulness to treat cases upon a system that cannot possibly do harm.23
All in all, Kingdon's contribution was a call to adaptation and to pragmatic adoption of any cure, from any system, if it worked. |

There are other activities that can be extremely beneficial to children suffering from asthma. In particular, you should encourage your child to swim well, as the breathing discipline needed to exhale under water is ideal for asthmatics. (Don't let your child get away with trying to keep his or her head out of the water as they swim: the point of the exercise is to exhale slowly and regularly, as happens during correct breathing for swimming.)
Floating is also excellent for asthmatic children, as it teaches them what to do with their mind and body when a parent asks them to relax. |
