From Belly Fat to Belly FLAT: How Your Hormones Are Adding Inches to Your Waistline and Subtracting Years from Your Life

The Safe Cosmetics Campaign began in 2002 with the release of a report, Not Too Pretty: Phthalates, beauty products and the FDA. For the report, environmental and public health groups contracted with a laboratory to test seventy-two name-brand, off-the-shelf beauty products for the presence of phthalates, a family of industrial chemicals linked to permanent birth defects in the male reproductive system.

Executives with some of America's top cosmetics companies were watching, for they could see that, despite their best efforts, European laws would soon challenge what was in their beauty products. Diplomats from the U.S. mission to the European Union were watching; they had been trying to orchestrate end runs around rising EU authority for the past three years. A posse of public relations experts from Burson-Marsteller, Hill & Knowlton, and other expert opinion shapers and manipulators, representing dozens of U.S.

Chemical-Free Home and Beauty Products NOT ONLY ARE WE SUBJECTED to a barrage of chemicals in our food, we also are breathing them in every time we clean our house, and are smothering ourselves with them every time we put on suntan lotion, face or body creams, or the many other beauty products available. While it is virtually impossible to cut chemicals out of your life entirely, it is possible to dramatically slash the amount that gets through by paying attention to the products you use to furnish and clean your house and those that you put on your face and body.

The mystery behind beauty products' magic was laid bare: Cosmetics are far more dependent on synthetic chemicals than on natural "essences" of anything. The seventh amendment mandates that chemicals determined to be carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxins—known collectively as CMRs—be removed from cosmetics sold in Europe6 (It also mandates a phase-out in the testing of cosmetic ingredients on animals.) Amendment seems almost too soft a word to evoke the radical impact the Europeans are having on the multibillion-dollar global cosmetics industry.

Every day, we use as many as 25 personal care products on our bodies. Some of the chemicals in these products are linked to cancer, infertility and birth defects—and most have never been evaluated for their health effects.

When testing seventy-two name-brand, off-the-shelf beauty products for the presence of phthalates, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found phthalates in nearly three-quarters of the products tested, though the chemicals were not listed on any of the labels.14 A second report from the same group, "Pretty Nasty," documented similar product test results in Europe. In September 2004, the European Union put into force a new amendment to their Cosmetics Directive that prohibits the use of known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens, and reproductive toxins in cosmetics.

Together, they hatched a plan: they would purchase a range of beauty products and send them to an independent laboratory to test for phthalates. "First we batch tested," Charlotte explained. "We would buy African-American hair products, take a tiny bit of each, stir them together and test that mixture, because we didn't have much money. Eventually we figured out that we wanted to test products that were most in use. So we found our way to the chain drugstore weekly, which publishes a report every year of the most popular brands.
Safe alternatives to phthalates are already being used in many beauty products. Now is the time for the federal government—and for companies like Calvin Klein and Unilever—to act decisively. And it's not just about beauty products, it's about clothes, iPods, books, TV shows, everything," Anne said. "What needs to happen is that we have to reconnect with who we really are." Mirror, Mirror on the Wall Ken Harris admits to feeling a bit guilty about what he does for a living. As a "digital photo retoucher," he airbrushes fashion photos of the glamorous models who broadcast idealized images of beauty around the world. We know, of course, about the airbrushing. Still, it's surprising to see Harris in action in Jesse Epstein's award-winning documentary film Wet Dreams and False Images.
Part of the reason, Felicia believes, is a special love affair with beauty products that stems from African heritage. The Egyptians were the first to discover and use cosmetics for the purposes of adornment some 6,000 years ago, and the bath ritual has always been an important part of African culture. "So I would say that we are subconsciously remembering what it was like to be in the motherland," said Felicia. But another part of it, according to Felicia, is "the whole legacy of racism, the feeling that you need to look a certain way to be accepted in this society.

However, treating outer blemishes with expensive, chemical-laden beauty products does little to address the root cause of the problem: poor nutrition and exposure to toxins in dietary and personal care products. "Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going on inside your body, and all skin conditions, from psoriasis to acne to aging, are the manifestations of your body's internal needs, including its nutritional needs," says Dr. Georgiana Donadio, founder of the National Institute of Whole Health.

Keep cosmetics and beauty products out of children's reach. Remember that hair permanents and relaxers are toxins as well. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, poisonous gas that can also cause sickness and death. The incomplete burning of fuels such as natural gas, oil, kerosene, propane, coal, and wood produce carbon monoxide. Also, fuel-burning appliances that are not working properly or are installed incorrectly can produce fatal concentrations of carbon monoxide in your home.
Evening primrose oil is often used in beauty products because it promotes skin repair and health and helps prevent premature aging. It does spoil easily, however. Flaxseed oil is full of vitamin E, making it valuable for skin healing and regeneration. It spoils quickly. Grapeseed oil is a good choice for oily or acne-prone skin because it is light and slightly astringent. Hazelnut oil helps skin maintain firmness and elasticity. It is expensive. Jojoba oil, which is actually a wax ester, softens and moisturizes skin while helping to control acne and oily skin.

When you combine this with the explosive increase in the amount of heavy metals and synthetic chemicals in our food, homes, and beauty products, the result is that we are exposed to levels of chemicals far higher than our bodies were ever designed to withstand. This increase has effectively overloaded our natural coping mechanisms, which are now struggling to deal with their increased burden. The more saturated with chemicals these natural mechanisms become, the less able they are to protect us.
Then, you will learn how to treat your body to clean and rejuvenating beauty products that will limit your exposure to many common toxins. Sources of Chemicals in a Typical Room Most chemicals that contaminate the home stem from the use of the following groups of substances: >• Pesticides in pest-control products (such as roach and flea treatments), wood treated for dry rot, mothproofing in wool carpets, paints, air pollution, and contaminated water.

As medical researchers, we're not focusing on the cosmetic aspects of aging, those visible signs of decline—sagging skin, age spots, receding hairlines, more pronounced facial features, and the like—that cause people so much anguish and create a huge market for beauty products companies. Even without the purely cosmetic indicators, we were still left with a rather lengthy list of biomarkers. Many of those remaining were internal, physiological functions that most people don't know much about and generally overlook when they think about growing old.

It's no wonder you'll find acerola in natural vitamin C supplements, beauty products, and juice drinks. Unfortunately, the whole fruit is harder to come by, mainly because it doesn't travel well. If you leave it out for only a few hours, it will begin to spoil. The acerola grows in warm climates from southern Texas and California, through Mexico and the Caribbean, and down into South America. If you'd like to try an acerola and you live far away from these areas, just visit a nearby farmer's market and ask for it by name — "Ah-sah-roll-lah." It's worth a try.

HOW I RATE PERSONAL-CARE PRODUCTS As more people become aware that what they put on their bodies should be as pure as what they put in them, the number of natural personal-care and beauty products is increasing. Some people are even beginning to use organically grown or wildcrafted ingredients. Earthwise personal-care products are: • safe to use; • nonpolluting in their manufacture, use, and disposal; • made from natural, renewable ingredients that are organically grown or wildcrafted— devoid of petrochemical ingredients; and • biodegradable.
Many beauty products fot sale may be unsafe because cosmetics ate not legally required to be tested for safety. The FDA can take action only after a cosmetic is on the market and enough evidence exists to prove in court that it is hazardous, after which the FDA may halt its production and sale. The ingredients used to make many cosmetic items ate detived from nonrenewable petrochemicals that can be hatmful to use and create toxic waste in their manufacture.
Nor do the labels tell you whether the ingredients in "natural" beauty products are actually derived from natural sources. Some clever manufacturers create "natural" formulas by adding natural-sounding ingredients such as honey or herbs or jojoba oil, instead of actually making a more natural formula by removing unnecessary artificial colors, fragrances, and preservatives. If you have allergies, beware of products labeled "hypoallergenic." No one product can be truly hypoallergenic to everyone.
