If you are concerned about the odor from some of the biodegradable litters, you can sprinkle about a teaspoon of baking soda in with the litter. baking soda works better than the deodorizers in clumping litters, plus it is safer. These deodorizers can be toxic, and can cover up the odors but the baking soda will absorb them and it is nontoxic. Read labels and make sure that the product contains no deodorizers, colors, or drying agents that could be potentially harmful to your cat.
A good hint for changing the brand of litter with finicky cats is to do this slowly. |

When baking soda (a base) is added to a solution of vinegar (an acid), the result is foaming and bubbling due to the release of carbon dioxide (a gas). The same holds true when a solution of baking soda is swallowed. Upon entering the stomach, the reaction between the baking soda and

Take a few strands of hair from your hairbrush (this works better if you have longer hair) and soak one strand in a tablespoon or so of lemon juice (this is the acid) and another in an equal amount of baking soda and water (one tablespoon baking soda to two tablespoons water; this is the alkaline). Then rinse both strands gently and allow them to dry. Run your fingers back and forth over the strands and notice how they feel and look. You should notice that the hair soaked in the lemon juice and water will feel smoother and look shinier than the strand soaked in baking soda and water. |

Caution: While damp baking soda works well to remove many odors, it can also get stuck onto the carpet fibers and be difficult to clean. If you live in a very humid climate and worry that the baking soda may become damp once applied, you might substitute a light spray of white distilled vinegar for the baking soda.

Almost any topical scrub or even just a washcloth, does this; I no longer recommend baking soda as a scrub. In contrast, chemical exfoliants such as glycolic and salicylic acids surpass topical scrubs because they exfoliate more evenly and thoroughly and with no abrasion. Nevertheless, Pore Minimizer Thermal-Active Skin Refiner will produce smoother, more even-toned skin with consistent use. You don't need to spend this much money to get such results, but there is nothing in this product that is harmful to skin. |

Baking soda should also not be taken for more than 14 days. People with high blood pressure (page 246) should not take baking soda. Uva ursi should not be used to treat an infection (page 265) without first consulting a physician.
Are there any side effects or interactions?
Due to the high tannin content in uva ursi, some people may experience cramping, nausea, or vomiting. It is also not recommended for long-term use. Uva ursi should not be taken by pregnant (page 363) or breast-feeding women and should be used in young children only with the guidance of a healthcare professional. |

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the following combination in cases of severe dehydration: Mix 1 liter of filtered water, 2 tbsp of sugar, M tsp of salt, ]4 tsp of potassium chloride, and Y tsp of baking soda. These can be added to a tea of fennel seed and peppermint leaves. The seeds of fennel are full of flavor and are helpful for treating diarrhea. Peppermint counteracts nausea and vomiting, and soothes irritated and inflamed tissues, especially in the digestive system. |

Castor Oil Packs
Castor oil comes from the bean of the castor plant (Oleum ricini). The plant itself is quite poisonous, but the oil pressed out of the bean is safe to use, since the toxic constituents remain in the seeds. The ancient Egyptians used castor oil as a laxative and as a scalp rub to make hair grow and shine. |

The average person absorbs anywhere from 10 to 100 mg of aluminum every day through aluminum cookware, baking soda, antacids, and numerous other sources.
And although the cause of Alzheimer's disease remains unclear, research indicates that aluminum toxicity may be one of the primary culprits.
A natural deodorant stone costs only about $10 and lasts at least two to five years. It works wonderfully and has no nasty side effects. When you check the ingredient list of a deodorant stone, don't get alarmed when you see the word "alum" written there. |
| It is also helpful to brush your teeth afterward or rinse out the mouth with baking soda. One of the main actions of Epsom salt is to dilate (widen) the bile ducts, making it easy for the stones to pass. Moreover, the salts clear out waste that may obstruct the release of the stones. (If you are allergic to Epsom salts or are just not able to get them down, you may instead use the second best choice—magnesium citrate—at the same dosage.) Set out the citrus fruit you will be using later, so that it can warm to room temperature.
8:00 p.m.: Drink your second serving (3A glass) of Epsom salts. |
| It may be useful to rinse your mouth out with baking soda and/or brush your teeth several times per day to prevent the acid from damaging your teeth. (In case you are intolerant of apple juice or allergic to it, see the other options explained in Having Difficulties with the Cleanse at the end of this chapter.)
> Dietary recommendations: During the entire week of preparation and cleansing, avoid foods or beverages that are cold or chilled; they chill the liver and, thereby, reduce the effectiveness of the cleanse. All foods or beverages should be warm or at least room temperature. |
| Then rinse out your mouth with half a teaspoon of baking soda or unrefined sea salt (take either of these dissolved in a small amount of water). This solution will remove all remnants of the oil and toxins. Additionally, you may want to brush your teeth to make sure your mouth is clean. Tongue scraping is also advised.
Some of the visible effects of oil swishing include the elimination of gum bleeding and the whitening of teeth. During times of illness, this procedure can be repeated 3 times per day, but only on an empty stomach. |

Simple baking soda can be great for cleaning sinks and tubs; vinegar in a pump spray bottle cleans windows and mirrors. In the meantime, don't create your own ubermixture with bleach and ammonia. Without proper ventilation, that combination creates toxic hydrogen chloride that can kill you. With proper ventilation, it's just a little bit toxic (don't do it).

INFUSIONS
An infusion is a simple tea made with one or more herbs steeped in boiled water. To make an infusion, weigh out one ounce of dry herbs. Add one pint (two cups) of boiling water to the herbs. Some herbs will taste better if you use more than two cups of water. Steep the herbs for ten to twenty minutes. |

V baking soda and cornstarch. Apply a mixture of these powders in malodorous areas.
