In addition to the diabetes and the obesity and hypoglycemia, I also suffered from severe back pain. I'm talking about hard-core, chronic back pain here. The kind of back pain that a person who is in their twenties shouldn't be experiencing. And that's when it started with me. Maybe I was 21 or 22, but it was very early in my 20's that I started experiencing this chronic back pain.
And how bad was it? Well, it was so bad that I couldn't sit for more than a few minutes without experiencing excruciating pain. And yet, I was a writer. I used to work for a software company writing documentation. |

| Other studies have shown that some people with back pain have normal spines on X-ray. So, Dr. Sarno says there is not necessarily any association between back pain and spinal X-ray abnormality.92 However, if a person happens to have back pain and an incidental abnormality on X-ray, they may be treated surgically, sometimes with no change in back pain, or worsening of back pain, or even permanent disability.
In addition, doctors often order X-rays as protection against malpractice claims to give the impression that they are leaving no stone unturned. |

If you also suffer from back pain and consider having surgery, you ought to be aware of the fact that more than two thirds of back pain sufferers who receive surgery for their condition end up with more pain than before. Unless the chunks of toxic waste are removed from the colon, gallstones removed via cleansing from the liver and gallbladder, and the kidney/ureters cleansed, the causes for back pain are likely to continue or worsen. The symptoms linked with these obstructions are not limited to the back. |

I decided to take care of my back pain from the inside out, by fundamentally changing my approach to healthy living.
One of the things that I now do is regular stretching and physical exercise. I took up yoga and then several years later began doing Pilates when I learned about that. But beyond the physical actions, I also stopped sitting in chairs that had backs, choosing to sit on stool chairs instead. This forced me to hold up my back using my own back muscles. It sounds insanely simple, I know, but the truth is that most people who sit don't hold themselves up. |

If there are multiple vertebral fractures, called compression fractures, the most obvious sign is an abnormal curvature called kyphosis. If back pain, height loss, and kyphosis are all present, this warrants an x-ray of the spine to determine if there is osteoporosis and/or vertebral fractures. Even excessive height loss without back pain warrants an x-ray to confirm a spine fracture. Women who have one vertebral fracture are at high risk for a subsequent fracture,31 which makes diagnosing a single vertebral fracture that much more important.
Body weight should also be recorded. |

Today I recognize this was the entire source of my back pain. My muscles were simply too weak to hold me up.
I found sitting on stool chairs to be quite exhausting at first. I couldn't hold my back up for very long; I just didn't have the strength and stamina to do it. But over a period of several months I began training myself to sit on stools and to hold my own back up while I was working on the computer. Of course, over time my back strengthened, just like any back will, to the point where I could hold myself up without any pain whatsoever. |

Studies show that the practice of hatha yoga by back pain sufferers can reduce "pain intensity, reliance on pain medication, and disability."6 Yoga has also been shown to reduce the stress level of cancer patients, ease insomnia, and improve emotional wellbeing.7 It's the first place to start when dealing with low back pain, rather than jumping to drugs, which may mask the symptoms without doing anything to help the conditions giving rise to the pain. |

I strongly urge anyone reading this who has any back pain whatsoever, or who just wants better pelvic flexibility and better pelvic strength to take a serious look at the Swopper chair, or some other kind of active sitting chair. The Swopper is the only active sitting chair I'm recommending since I've used it for several months and I've seen the quality of construction -- it is a high quality chair that looks virtually unbreakable. My one complaint is that the chair is a bit hard. |

Low back pain is another common condition for which a variety of safe treatments based on exercise and consciousness are available. It is pervasive, afflicting some 65 million Americans, "affecting nearly 80% of the adult population at some time during their life. It represents the single most common cause for disability in persons under age 45."5 Studies show that the practice of hatha yoga by back pain sufferers can reduce "pain intensity, reliance on pain medication, and disability. |

REPPED: back pain is a widespread problem in modern society, and a lot of that pain comes from, believe it or not, lack of exercise of skeletal muscles, lower back muscles, abdominal muscles and so on. So many of us have desk jobs today, and we spend a huge amount of time sitting in a chair that trains our musculoskeletal system to be lazy.
Today I've got some exciting news about a product called Swopper. The Swopper chair is something I purchased several months ago, and have been using ever since. I've found it to be flat out the most impressive active sitting chair I've ever used. |
| Over a period of a couple of years, this condition worsened to the point where I couldn't sit for more than 30 minutes without experiencing severe back pain. That meant I couldn't go to a movie and sit through it without experiencing excruciating pain. I couldn't fly to go on vacation anywhere, because sitting on an airplane was one of the most painful experiences I could imagine. I couldn't drive in a car very far either, because I'd have to stop every hour or so and get out to walk around and stretch. |

| Even X-rays for back pain can lead someone into crippling surgery. Dr. Sarno, a well-known New York orthopedic surgeon, found that X-rays don't always tell the truth. In his books he cites studies on normal people without a trace of back pain that have spinal abnormalities on X-ray. Other studies have shown that some people with back pain have normal spines on X-ray. So, Dr. Sarno says there is not necessarily any association between back pain and spinal X-ray abnormality. |

BACK PAIN
Back pain can be handled with the same pain relievers described above. back pain can be a mechanical problem requiring the care of a chiropractor, osteopath, physical therapist, or orthopedist; chronic back pain is also highly responsive to mind-body approaches (we recommend Dr. John Sarno's Healing back pain for more on this). However, herbs can be a useful adjunct to other therapies to relieve pain and inflammation naturally without side effects. |

All my back pain disappeared as I began to strengthen my abdominal and back muscles.
What does all this have to do with the Swopper product and what I call this miraculous chair? Well, even though I trained myself to sit up straight and hold my own back up, if I'd had the Swopper, I could have trained myself much faster and been much more effective in regaining both flexibility and strength.
You see the Swopper encourages something called "active sitting." Active sitting means you're sitting, but you're stabilizing your torso the entire time. The Swopper chair is mounted on a giant spring. |

Smith later said he had been taking tramadol for back pain, as well as Flomax, for prostate problems, and diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in both Benadryl and Tylenol PM. Prosecutors also found that Smith had lied on his medical exam form in 2000 when he said he was not taking any medication. He had actually been using pills for insomnia, cholesterol, high blood pressure, back pain, and his prostate. Smith's doctor was indicted on charges of knowingly signing that medical report, which he knew was false. Smith pleaded guilty to eleven counts of seaman's manslaughter. |

With dehydration this lubricating film of water evaporates and the joints rub right on each other. back pain, particularly lower back pain, and sciatica are often the result of the intervertebral discs becoming dehydrated. These discs normally create a space cushion between the vertebrae by virtue of how much water they can hold. When the discs are dehydrated, 75 percent of the upper body weight that they cushion against begins to bear down on the intervertebral spaces and put pressure on the intervertebral nerves. This often causes muscle spasms. |

Cathy Wong, a German study found that mineral supplements increased intracellular magnesium levels by 11% and was associated with a reduction in pain symptoms in 76 out of 82 people with chronic low back pain.7 London researchers provide strong evidence that magnesium sulphate produces pain relief in patients with PHN8, a neuropathic pain condition.9
Magnesium deficiency is common in people with depression and chronic pain. Major depression is thought to be four times greater in people with chronic back pain than in the general population (Sullivan, Reesor, Mikail & Fisher, 1992). |

Beyond helping with sleep, memory foam has allowed some people to resolve long-standing issues such as chronic back pain. In truth, the two issues are interrelated; if you have less discomfort, you'll sleep better. Because memory foam supports the curves of the body and provides the support the body, it can help eliminate restless, pain-filled nights and provide relief from back pain the following day.
The top layers of cushioning in a mattress are important not only for their firmness, but also for their ability to breathe and prevent overheating. |

Vitamin D, Diet, Learning, and Memory
Memory and learning are different sides of the same coin, and both are linked to brain development. During brain development, your body selectively turns off nerve cells to create a sensory or motor response, like carving away excess wood or chipping away excess stone to create a sculpture. |

They tried to get doctors to refrain from ordering an MRI for uncomplicated back pain, or sending a patient with a suspected ulcer to a gastroenterologist without trying to treat him first with drugs. But doctors didn't know that they were overtreating their patients, or that by sending them off to a specialist unnecessarily, they were being wasteful. All they knew was that when they were deselected, they could wake up one morning to discover that they suddenly had dozens fewer patients. For some doctors, that simply meant lost income. |
| Of course, not all back pain and sciatica go away with conservative treatment, and a lot of people wind up having spinal fusion surgery. Some opt for surgery within a few weeks of the onset of pain, without giving other forms of treatment a chance. A few find complete relief; their pain is wiped out. But does surgery usually help most patients? And is it any better than more-conservative treatment, like physical therapy? Nobody knows, because surgeons, though they have been performing back fusions for decades, have never actually done the correct research that's necessary to find out. |

A gentle rocking movement added to the exercise can be good practice for labor and lessen pain and ease the passage of the baby through the birth canal.

Research supports the use of DLPA in relief of back pain, arthritis, aches, pains, and menstrual cramps. Phenylalanine slows the body's breakdown of endorphins, the body's internal painkillers. The more endorphins you have hanging around, the less pain you have.
Note: If you have a condition known as phenylketonurea (PKU) do not use this nutrient. PKU is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the inability to break down phenylalanine. |

Such remedies include telling a patient with back pain to go home and take some pain medication and wait, or to try moderate exercise and stretching, which may work as well or better than surgery for most patients. When your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Wennberg's discovery of huge variations in the rates of different surgeries was partly a reflection of the uneven distribution of doctors around the country. |

Doctors in hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School admitted patients to the intensive care unit four times more often than their colleagues at Yale University School of Medicine. Arthroscopic knee surgery—which would later be shown to be entirely ineffective at treating knee pain due to arthritis—was performed five times more often on arthritic patients in Miami than in Iowa City. |
