| When your child is old enough to eat solid food, consider making your own baby food or choosing a brand of baby food made from organically grown foods. If this isn't possible, check the labels on the brands at your supermarket. Many major brands have removed additives, though they still contain pesticide residues.

Russell Blaylock, the author of Excitotoxins, MSG is damaging to the brain, nervous system, endocrine system and even promotes obesity by interfering with appetite regulation. baby food manufacturers voluntarily removed MSG from baby foods decades ago after being accused by consumer advocates of harming babies' nervous systems with the chemical. MSG remains widely used today in canned soups, breakfast sausage, salad dressing and other commercial foods. |

Since their baby food did not consist of large amounts of vitamin C, they soon developed the dangerous baby scurvy.
The body of an adult, who consumes vitamin C regularly, may eventually produce a similar response. He may even develop scurvy because the body becomes programmed to eliminate vitamin C faster and in larger quantities than it is ingested or can be absorbed. Adults are known to develop further complications when, after using this vitamin regularly, they suddenly stop taking it altogether. |

Nine out of every ten babies eat at least some commercial baby food. According to Gerber®, the average American baby eats 600 jars of baby food and fruit juices in his or her first year of life.
In 1995, the Environmental Working Group (ewg) put out a booklet called Pesticides in baby food. They had tested eight foods (applesauce, garden vegetables or pea and carrot blend, green beans, peaches, pears, plums, squash, and sweet potatoes) made by the three major babyfood producers—Gerber®, Heinz®, and Beech-Nut®—which account for 96 percent of all baby food sales. |

And monosodium glutamate is perfectly healthy for children, which is why food companies add it to baby food! So is saccharin, hydrogenated oils and sodium nitrite in processed meat. Result: Massive malnutrition, liver damage, and the beginnings of the diabetes and obesity epidemics that would sweep the nation over the next generation.

2) Why does the FDA allows nerve-damaging monosodium glutamate chemicals (and derivatives) to be used in baby food?
3) Why does the Girl Scouts continue to make its famous cookies with partially-hydrogenated oils known to contribute to essential fatty acid deficiencies in infants?
4) Why is aspartame still allowed in the food supply at all? (An excotitoxin)
5) Why is mercury still tolerated in American dental work (and, in fact, still pushed by the American Dental Association!) when mercury ingestion is so dangerous to human health? |

This is well known throughout the industry. baby food manufacturers, for example, voluntarily removed MSG from their products decades ago following a public outcry about the dangers of MSG to babies and infants.
And yet today, numerous "all natural" food companies continue to use hidden forms of MSG in their foods, hiding them under innocent-sounding ingredients like yeast extract, autolyzed or hydrolyzed proteins (all of which contain MSG). Even the companies you've grown to trust in the "natural" food business are engaged in the blatant hiding of MSG in their products. |

It can be added to baby food as a nutritive and to nourish recently weaned infants or those who can't digest milk. It also is popular in lozenges designed to treat sore throat and coughs.

Slippery elm is sometimes added to cosmetics as an emollient. Used as a binder, it holds herbal tablets together. At one time the bark was added to fats to prevent rancidity. |

As a result, considerable pressure was put on the food industry to remove MSG from baby food. However, no official action has been taken by the FDA to outlaw MSG in baby food. In fact, there are junior food products and baby formulas on the market that contain MSG. Ironically, many of the formulas for allergic infants contain larger amounts than the regular formulas. In addition, there are many infants and toddlers who eat table food that contains MSG. |

Baby food. Pesticides have been found in more than half of the baby foods tested. Commercial organic baby foods are available. Some brand names are Earth's Best, Well-Fed Baby, and Gerber's Tender Harvest.
• Rice. Rice is often heavily sprayed. Pesticide used on rice fields in the Sacramento River Valley of California has contaminated ground water there.
• Strawberries. These have been called the single most pesticide-laden produce in the United States. Out-of-season berries may be imported from countries where farmers use pesticides that have been banned in the United States. |

Jean Mayer, the noted Harvard food scientist, remarked at a women's meeting of the National Press Club that "with even the slightest presumption of guilt I would take the damn stuff out of baby food." Gerber, Heinz, and Beechnut almost immediately announced that they would stop using MSG in baby foods. However, infants still get MSG from ordinary table foods and may be ingesting it in various broths added to infant and baby foods. In addition, MSG already present in other ingredients has crept back into some prepared baby foods. |

While organic milk does avoid the dangerous hormones and antibiotics used in the production of conventional milk, organic cows' milk is still just organic baby food for cows and in no way qualifies as food for healthy, adult, mature human beings. Although I frequently recommend organic products and groceries over non-organic ones, this is one case where both varieties appear to do more harm than good. I recommend avoiding them both.

Fortunately, well-known baby food brands are now selling organic. The next best thing to buying certified organic food is to buy fruits and vegetables at local farmer markets. Get to know local farmers who do not use pesticides on their crops. You can also purchase poultry and meat products made from chickens, sheep, and cattle that consumed nonpes-ticide feed and are free of hormones and antibiotics. Organic milk is now available as well.

Breast-feeding (see Natural Birthing & Nursing Supplies), seems to be the best choice for newborns: not only is mother's milk the perfect food supplied by Nature, but it supplies a baby with important nutrients and immune factors not found in commercial infant formulas.

The gentle flavor, high-fat content, smooth texture and natural oils within them make avocados an ideal beauty food, and an excellent baby food.
There is no doubt about it, avocados are the best transition food from a cooked-food diet to a raw-food diet. Fatty raw plant foods are remarkably satisfying. Fatty foods in general (nuts, seeds, coconuts, avocados, olives, durians, etc.) transition you from cooked foods to raw foods - they are the bridge.
The avocado is in ascendancy right now worldwide; more and more people are discovering its secrets. You want to know how powerful the avocado is? |

Cows' milk is baby food for calves.
• No species on Earth drinks the milk of another species - except humans who drink cows' milk.
• Only babies should drink mothers' milk. Adults are supposed to be weaned off of mothers' milk, which is why the majority of adults cannot properly digest cows' milk.
• One cup of cows' milk contains less calcium than one cup of broccoli juice.
• Cows' milk is deficient in magnesium and vitamin D - and both are required for strong bones.
A critical look at cows' milk reveals the undeniable fact that cows' milk is babv food. |

Food processors and baby food grinders make it easy to create meals from steamed vegetables and fruits. Add tofu for protein. Prepare food in small batches and use it quickly to guard against spoilage. Avoid using nonorganic, commercially processed baby foods. They are less nutritious and may be diluted with cheap fillers and additives. They also may contain traces of pesticide residues.
Introduce each new food separately and wait about a week before feeding the baby a different food to see whether your child has a negative reaction, such as a skin rash, or develops a change in bowel habits. |

But even beyond the fundamental concept that cows' milk is baby food, there are a great many additional hazards present when it comes to drinking "bovine extract." These will be discussed in some detail in the sections that follow.
If we were pouring large glasses of ice-cold raw, organic milk into our children's glasses, we might not see as many problems. Pasteurized, homogenized, bovine-growth hormone, and antibiotic-laced milk is not the equivalent. |

These are even found in baby food. They are found in snack lunch trays. They're found in salad dressings and almost all of the soups sold at any grocery store. You have to look for these excitotoxins on the label to avoid them.
The other thing that stimulates appetite is the consumption of refined carbohydrates. The more carbohydrates and sugars you consume, the stronger your appetite will surge back several hours later, after your blood sugar peaks and then is corrected back to the low side. |

Now, didn't baby food manufacturers voluntarily remove this ingredient in the '70s?
Dr. Blaylock: They said they would, but they didn't. What they did is take out pure MSG and substitute it with hydrolyzed protein and caseinate. If you look at most toddler foods, they all have caseinate hydrolyzed protein broth, a significant source of glutamate.
Mike: We're destroying the nervous systems of these babies.
Dr. Blaylock: Exactly. Now, one of the things we're hearing a lot about is childhood obesity. One early observation with exitotoxicity is it makes animals grossly obese. |

Under Assistant Secretary for Food and Consumer Services of the USDA, Carol Tucker Foreman, the USDA also proposed the elimination of sodium nitrite and other nitrites in baby food. She proposed reductions in the levels of nitrite added to meats that would have drastically reduced the levels of nitrosamines in cooked bacon.
For this effort, she was attacked by the meat industry and accused of trying to "ban bacon. |
