"All natural" claim on food labels is often deceptive; foods harbor hidden MSG and other unnatural ingredients

I replied by reading their PR person the list of ingredients printed right on their own box (which included autolyzed yeast extract), then I showed them documentation supporting the fact that autolyzed yeast extract always contains MSG, and that autolyzed yeast extract is used for only one purpose in manufactured foods: as a chemical taste enhancer. It has no other purpose in the realm of food science.

Pacific Natural Foods' Organic Free-Range Chicken Broth lists Organic chicken broth (filtered water, organic chicken), organic chicken flavor, natural chicken flavor (chicken broth, salt), organic cane sweetener, autolyzed yeast extract, organic onion powder, turmeric, natural flavor. The ingredients in parentheses identify what the preceding ingredient consists of, if it happens to contain multiple ingredients, such as in the case of Organic chicken broth (filtered water, organic chicken).

Here's the ingredients list for Yves "Savory Veggie" veggie burgers: Water, oats, brown rice, onions, cheddar cheese (milk, bacterial culture, salt, calcium chloride, enzymes), mushrooms, flax meal, canola oil, red peppers, flaxseeds, dextrose, salt, textured soy protein (with caramel color), modified vegetable gum, natural cheese flavor, corn starch, torula yeast, hydrolyzed wheat protein, autolyzed yeast extract, spices, carrageenan, garlic powder, tomato powder. [Emphasis added.] I get a headache just thinking about eating any of those foods.

Check the ingredient labels on those foods, and you'll find autolyzed yeast extract, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and other additives. These are all different forms of monosodium glutamate, or chemical taste enhancers, designed to get your tongue to notice you're eating something. And they're only used because you've blown away your sense of taste via taste inflation. Highly offensive to healthy humans If you were to take any of these foods or personal care products found in America and give them to indigenous tribes, they wouldn't even touch them.

"All natural" claim on food labels is often deceptive; foods harbor hidden MSG and other unnatural ingredients

This came to light recently when I published an article about autolyzed yeast extract containing MSG, and I was contacted by the manufacturer of a popular veggie burger product who claimed that my article was incorrect, that their product didn't contain MSG, and that they used nothing but all-natural ingredients.
And if it has yeast extract, or autolyzed yeast extract, or hydrolyzed vegetable protein or any of these other ingredients that actually harbor MSG, then it is, in my opinion, a deceptively positioned product, because it claims to be natural but in fact uses highly potent refined extracts that don't occur anywhere near that concentration in nature. You'll see a much more detailed discussion of all this in my upcoming book, "Grocery Warning," due out shortly.

Those ingredients are MSG, yeast extract, autolyzed yeast extract, hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, and other similar ingredients. Warning: watch out for broth products made by Kitchen Basics. They claim their products don't contain MSG or yeast extract, but when I tried their product, I experienced a massive "MSG headache" that tells me it contains free glutamic acid that isn't listed on the label. (I'm very sensitive to MSG.) The brand of broth I buy is Trade Joe's house brand, which does not contain free glutamic acid.

Unfortunately, I have run across it in a few natural brand processed foods as well, usually listed as "autolyzed yeast extract," or "yeast extract." Although some people may have no reaction to MSG in these forms, those of us who are very sensitive to it may. Especially if you are sensitive to this toxic flavor enhancer, you will want to familiarize yourself with the many names under which MSG may be hidden listed on the side bar. It is also important to understand that MSG accumulates in your tissues.
Unfortunately, there are a few brands that have made there way into the health foods stores that contain autolyzed yeast extract, which is a source of MSG. Make up a fresh salad or side of fresh steamed vegetables, and you've got a quick and delicious meal that isn't half bad. Thai Kitchen also makes a great rice noodle soup that comes in little packets. Throw in some chopped carrots and zucchini to the boiling water and a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil and you have a satisfying gluten-free meal.

Believe it or not, companies can even put MSG in a product and call it "natural flavors." I'm not kidding. (Search Google for Dr. Russell Blaylock or "excitotoxins" to learn more about the disastrous health effects of MSG...) The food companies have learned that they can slap the word "natural" on any product and more people will buy it, even if there's nothing natural about it.
