Many people don't realize that anti-inflammatory drugs harm more than 100,000 people in the United States each year and kill 20,000 each year. According to the FDA, Vioxx alone is associated with heart attacks in more than 27,000 patients over the last several years.
But new medical research is showing that fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids may be just as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs without any of the negative side effects. |

This and other anti-inflammatory drugs cause stomach tissue to tighten (but not esophagus tissue), thereby widening the esophagus passage and allowing stomach acid to pass through Before anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil became widely available, heartburn was rare and was almost always related to diet. Today, up to 70 percent of all acid reflux cases may be linked to the prolonged use of anti-inflammatory drugs. Since their introduction a few decades ago, acid reflux disease experienced an enormous jump. |

But new medical research is showing that fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids may be just as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs without any of the negative side effects. In this particular study, more than two thirds of study participants were able to stop using anti-inflammatory drugs and, instead, switch to fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids. Naturally, fish oils don't exhibit the dangerous side effects of prescription drugs such as increased death rates, increased risk of heart attacks, and serious neurological disorders.
Better yet, fish oils are far less expensive than prescription drugs. |

Today, up to 70 percent of all acid reflux cases may be linked to the prolonged use of anti-inflammatory drugs. Since their introduction a few decades ago, acid reflux disease experienced an enormous jump. This example shows once again that taking anti-inflammatory drugs versus dealing with the causes of the health condition, is not a solution at all, but leads instead to even bigger problems than those that existed before.
Consider the anti-cancer drugs that cause cancer. |

Prescriptions for Arthritis:
Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs nna, my friend's mother, was in amazing health for a woman of eighty-two, her only medical problem being arthritis of the spine and hip. Her doctor prescribed a common anti-arthritic drug, Vioxx.
At that time, COX-2 inhibitor drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex, a newer class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), were replacing the older NSAIDs like Naprosyn and Aleve, Motrin and Advil, and Voltaren, Athrotec, and Cataflam. |

But there is no justification for using the anti-inflammatory drugs to prevent colon cancer because they can cause mortal cardiovascular side effects. [Reuters Health, April 3, 2006]
In one study, more than 60 % of those on an inactive placebo developed new polyps, but less than half of those on the COX-2 inhibitor did. However, 3.4% of those taking the drug had heart attacks, strokes or other serious heart-related problems versus 2.5% on the placebo. [National Cancer Institute, Summaries of Newsworthy Clinical Trial Results, Feb. |
| Patients are prescribed aspirin or COX-2 inhibitor anti-inflammatory drugs after polyp removal, but the COX-2 inhibitors raise the risk for fatal heart attacks and aspirin may cause bleeding ulcers. Survival rates do not include figures for patients who succumbed to other causes, even if they were induced by treatment.
As ineffective as treatment is for colon cancer, the practice of modern medicine is driven by insurance billing codes. |

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which include the widely used over-the-counter painkilling drugs ibuprofen, aspirin, and indo-methacin, greatly reduce melatonin secretion at night and even disturb the amount of restorative deep sleep. This is due to their inhibitory effect on the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are necessary in the production of melatonin.36 In one study, subjects administered standard dosages of aspirin or ibuprofen twice in one day suffered significantly higher rates of delayed sleep onset and repeated nighttime awakenings than did the control subjects. |

Healthy adults who use anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, Motrin or Vioxx to prevent cancer are more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke induced by these drugs than from cancer. [British Medical Journal 330:1366, 2005]
Before these drugs were taken off the market temporarily by the FDA, Celebrex and Vioxx generated $5 billion in annual sales to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. A daily dose of Celebrex or Vioxx costs about $2.50 a day. |

A physician may be able to stop initial pain in the stomach with an antacid or a painkiller, and when the catarrh occurs, he may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs. As the growing ulcer becomes unbearable, a surgeon may decide to cut it out. When the cancer appears, an oncologist may prescribe chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical removal of the tumor and parts of the stomach. |

Since there were no signs of improvement, her doctors increased the dosage of the drugs at regular intervals. Her face and body were covered with spots that she scratched to the bleeding point during the night. She had several other symptoms, including strong menstrual cramps, headaches and severe lower-back pain. |

This event demonstrates perfectly well the sinister nature of the FDA, which clearly intends to restrict the spread of knowledge about cherries and thereby protect the profits of anti-inflammatory drugs that treat joint pain. If Americans knew the true power of cherries to reduce inflammation, you see, the sales of anti-inflammatory drugs might plummet, and the criminal drug pushers who run organized medicine today can't allow that to happen. Hence, censorship and oppression of scientific information are the tactics used to keep the American people ignorant and, therefore, controlled. |

| There is some evidence that aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help prevent esophagus cancer from developing in patients who have Barrett's esophagus. Souza and her coauthor, however, are not convinced that the benefits of taking these drugs outweigh the risks.
ENDOSCOPY AS SCREENING TOOL
For those at high risk—a white male age 65 to 74 years old who has longstanding heartburn, for example—Souza recommends seeing a physician and getting an endoscopy even in the absence of any alarm symptoms and, hopefully, before a tumor has developed. |

Gastritis may be triggered by a viral infection, drinking too much alcohol, an unhealthy diet, smoking, or taking drugs such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs over a long period of time. However, the most common cause of gastritis is the bacteria called H. pylori, the same bug that causes stomach ulcers. If you are showing symptoms of gastritis, avoid solid foods and drink plenty of water and other bland liquids to prevent dehydration. If you have gastritis try to eat a healthy diet, give up smoking, and watch your intake of alcohol and caffeine. |

Conventional treatment aims to prevent flare-ups and reduce pain by eliminating the use of any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and eradicating the bacteria H. pylori, which is associated with ulcers. Caution: With peptic ulcers, any bleeding in vomit or stools is dangerous and the opinion of a gastroenterologist should be sought.
Modify your lifestyle: Lifestyle changes should be carried out. These include giving up smoking and drinking alcohol, and avoiding aspirin and NSAIDs. Stress reduction therapy should also be introduced. |
| Pain relief: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to reduce pain. Effective intravenous NSAIDs such as ketorolac can be given for immediate relief. If this does not work, intravenous narcotic analgesics are given.
Remove the stone: It is thought that increasing fluids either orally or intravenously can help to push stones out, but some doctors feel this is dangerous as it may cause an obstruction. Extracorporeal Shockwave lithotripsy, or ESWL, (in which sound waves are used to break up stones) is a common method of stone ablation. |

Prevention: Avoid any irritating substances, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, alcohol, tobacco, and any foods that cause an increase in irritation of the stomach. Alternatives to non-steroidal drugs include ginger, turmeric, and plant flavonoids, which can be obtained from many natural health products.

| Medication: Once a migraine has occurred, it is treated by acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Trials show that these medications are more effective than a placebo, but they are not specific for migraine headaches. A more appropriate first-line migraine treatment is a class of drugs called triptans. Sumatriptan and naratriptan are in this category. Ergotamines can also be used to treat severe headaches, unless the patient has a history of coronary artery disease. Sometimes anti-emetic drugs are added to treat the nausea and vomiting that can accompany a migraine. |
| Medication usually consists of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to help back pain and decrease swelling. Narcotic analgesics can be used in appropriate individuals for 48 hours prior to using NSAIDs. Skeletal muscle relaxants such as cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril®) may be helpful for severe spasm. Local and epidural injections sometimes alleviate chronic back pain.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are also used to reduce blood loss, especially in women who have DUB but still have normal ovulation. When NSAIDs are taken during the episode of menorrhagia, the effect is a 20 to 50 percent reduction in blood loss. The following anti-inflammatories are usually given for the first three days of menses, or throughout the menstrual flow, and seem to have similar effects:
