DIAGNOSIS
Mastitis, an inflammation and infection of the breast, is a common problem in women. It generally occurs between the ages of 18 and 50 and affects both those who are breastfeeding and those who are not. In breastfeeding women, mastitis is most likely to occur during the first six weeks of breastfeeding, although some women develop it during the weaning process. |

Pygeum: The bark of this African plum tree has been extensively studied for its use in prostate troubles, but there are also reports of improvement in cases of impotence. A standardized extract of pygeum can be purchased and taken at 50 mg twice a day. This extract contains phytochemicals such as beta-sitosterol and n-docosanol that may help to increase testosterone through changes in prolactin levels. |

As a result, visits to doctors for depression in Japan went up 46 percent between 1999 to 2003, and sales of anti-depressants increased 500 percent during that time. When asked why GlaxoSmithKline went ahead with campaigns promoting depression and antidepressants, the Japanese product manager for Paxil explained: "When other pharmaceutical companies were giving up on developing antidepressants in Japan, we went ahead for a very simple reason: the successful marketing in the United States and Europe. |

General Adaptation Syndrome
Dr Hans Selye identified stress as a threat to the well-being of any organism.2'3 This threat can be psychological or physical or both. The body
122 reacts to both in the same way. According to Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome, there are three stress-related phases:
• Alarm phase: This occurs at the first encounter. Stress hormones are poured into the body. |

Among these are antibacterial agents such as Sulfa; the aforementioned PABAs and other sun lotion ingredients; hypoglycemic agents used by diabetics; diuretics for control of high blood pressure; tranquillizers and anti-depressants; broad-spectrum antibiotics; anti-arrhythmic Quinidine used to suppress abnormal heart rhythms; halogenated, antiseptic compounds used in cosmetics; many types of soaps; synthetic ingredients in most commercial beauty products ; and antihistamines used for colds and allergies. |
| They include antibiotics, anti-depressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, blood pressure medications, cholesterol-lowering drugs, estrogen, and tranquilizers. Any of these drugs can strip valuable vitamins and minerals from the body. When two or more of these drugs are combined— especially in an older patient—the risk of developing anemia rises almost exponentially. Anemia is a serious condition that can dramatically increase mortality risk for patients with chronic health problems, such as heart disease and cancer.
Many doctors and patients underestimate the risks associated with anemia. |

If everyone meditated, there would be much less need for expensive medical treatments.
Throughout India and Asia, meditation has been practised for thousands of years. It wasn't until the late 1960s, when the Beatles and other pop musicians focused their attention on Eastern music and culture, that masses of young people in the West adopted meditation in their search for alternative approaches to life's problems. |

Six months ago my premenstrual tension was getting so bad that I thought I would need anti-depressants. After speaking to Mary-Ann she advised me to go off wheat and dairy, which I did. Within the first month of cutting out wheat and dairy, my menstrual cycle was shortened to thirty-two days. I must admit, I was rather skeptical, initially, as to whether this would work, so I was really in a state of shock when my menstrual cycle shortened. Even though I had read your books I thought that it would not work for me. I had nothing to lose, so I gave it a try. |

I nodded.
"Actually, I had to ask for those. But the Mayo doctor said why not, they wouldn't hurt, and he'd read they might help, too."
"Right. But how do you feel when you take the shots?"
"Oh yes. Well, the first one gave me quite a lift, but it wore off after a day or two. Now I get a little boost out of them, but there's still a lot missing."
"Chances are that's exactly correct. |

She then suggested psychotherapy (an unfortunate bit of advice) and added, "I have been told that anti-depressants are somewhat effective, but the cure is psychotherapy."16 If "Dear Abby" is right, then most young boys in America could be helped by antidepressants (and fully cured with psychotherapy) since most young boys are not always truthful.

John's wort extracts are similar to those documented with other anti-depressants.31'37,38
Mild to Moderate Depression
In humans, there is clear evidence of efficacy in mild to moderate depression.24,39'54 The most recent update of the Cochrane Collaboration's review of St. John's wort for depression assessed 27 randomized trials including a total of 2291 patients and concluded that "there is evidence that extracts of hypericum are more effective than placebo for the short-term treatment of mild to moderately severe depressive disorders. |
| However, these studies have been criticized due to the small numbers of patients and the low doses of conventional tricyclic anti-depressants to which the St. John's wort was compared.47
A systematic review of studies comparing St. John's wort extracts and fluoxetine in the management of sub-threshold and mild depression concluded that there was no relevant efficacy difference between the two, based on the studies reviewed. However, the authors cautioned that the St. |

CAUTIONS/CONTRAINDICATIONS

There are anti-depressants now showing up in the water supply, which may explain why half the nation (or 51% to be more precise) can no longer think critically and seem to suffer from "zombie-head disorder."
But the really hilarious part about all of this is the image of tens of thousands of law-abiding citizens suddenly turning Han Solo (the smuggler from Star Wars, remember?) and being pursued by the FDA and law enforcement officials as they are smuggling prescription drugs across international lines for the benefit of their family members. |

Many anti-depressants work by inactivating the neurotransmitter inac-tivator enzyme. For example, some brain cells have a neutralizing enzyme called monoamine oxidase, or MAO for short, which neutralizes several of the amine neurotransmitters. One of the treatments of depression is aimed at increasing the amount of the neurotransmitter that elevates mood. This mood elevating neurotransmitter is called norepinephrine. MAO normally inactivates norepinephrine. Some anti-depressants also prevent re-uptake of the transmitter, thereby allowing mood elevating neurons to be stimulated longer. |

Scott took anti-depressants because she "didn't have a life anymore." But she says she couldn't take pain pills because they upset her stomach.
During her ordeal, friends were constantly recommending different supplemenrs for her to take, including MSM.
"I am a very cautious person," she says. "I don't jump into everyrhing. But I saw that a friend of mine with a Candida problem had gotten relief taking MSM so I decided to try some myself. That was July of 1998. I didn't like the taste much, but things started to happen right away so I stuck with it. |

Many times, in addition to the symptoms of the disease, patients develop severe side effects from multiple drugs. Some on high doses of cortisone develop high blood pressure, psychoses, and humps in the back.
Patients often develop severe scarring of the esophagus. They cannot swallow well. Solid food becomes lodged in the esophagus. They frequently lose their appetite. |

| As we have already stated, Prozac was the first in this new class of anti-depressants designed to chemically raise the level of brain serotonin. The evidence from the following double blind medical studies indicates that this serotonergic increase produces a craving for alcohol. In a study conducted by Liisa Ahtee and Kalervo
Eriksson (Physiology and Behavior, Vol. 8, pp. 123-126, 1972) rats which preferred alcohol had 15-20% higher concentrations of serotonin in the brain. One month into the study those showing an addiction to alcohol had 31% higher levels of serotonin concentrations. |

Whether these drugs be legal or illegal at this stage of our ever changing patterns of social acceptance or rejection is of no importance in the context of why they have these effects upon us or how they actually do affect us. |

Of critical importance in withdrawal is helping the adrenal system to normalize after drug use. Physical, mental and emotional stress should be avoided. A quiet and peaceful surrounding is critical. Nerves are very much "on the edge" during this period. Love, support and understanding from family and friends is essential. |
| Kramer, speaking of the other anti-depressants, states, "But they have not inspired the sort of enthusiasm and loyalty patients have shown for Prozac." Drug enforcement officials generally would read this "loyalty" as a clear sign of "addiction" or "dependence."
5) A very good source for discovering addictiveness is from the teenage population. And according to reports from teenagers, Prozac is a drug being sold among them as a street drug. They report that it is common knowledge among them just how much Prozac one can take for a "high" without overdosing. |
| Whats crazy is that they wanted to put me on different anti-depressants because I was depressed over what I went through on Prozac. The trial was horrible. It's just been incredible. But I now have two years of sobriety from my narcotics use - the prescription drugs I became addicted to after using Prozac, and a year and a half from my Prozac use. Can you imagine trying to get over that? |
