 Many anti-depressants work by inactivating the neurotransmitter inac-tivator enzyme. For example, some brain cells have a neutralizing enzyme called monoamine oxidase, or MAO for short, which neutralizes several of the amine neurotransmitters. One of the treatments of depression is aimed at increasing the amount of the neurotransmitter that elevates mood. This mood elevating neurotransmitter is called norepinephrine.
