The Secret History of the War on Cancer

In the case of these blood-boosting drugs intended to deal with the anemia so common in cancer patients, controlled supplements with inexpensive iron have been found to be as effective in many cases as more costly patented drugs in staving off anemia. But there is little effort to promote this alternative. In the U.S. today, we use three times more of these drugs than in other nations, and spend about five times more on chemotherapy, although our cancer survival statistics are not appreciably different.19 More times than we might like to admit, we use chemotherapy as a form of psychotherapy.

In addition, it is a myth that vegans are more prone to anemia owing to a deficiency in vitamin B12 than meat-eaters. In fact, I see far more anemic meat-eaters than vegetarians who are anemic. I personally suffered years of childhood anemia while on animal proteins, but completely recovered from it after eight weeks on a vegan diet (with the exception of butter). The idea of having to combine certain foods in order to get complete proteins is plain misinformation, too. The body does not depend on food proteins to produce the proteins it requires to be healthy.

Striking improvements" in cognitive function and anemia were noted. Vitamin B12 doesn't work alone, however. Having adequate amounts of all the B vitamins, especially folic acid and vitamin B6, is also critical for protection against homocysteine and cognitive decline. All work together nicely to reduce homocysteine levels and protect against anemias as well as mental disorders. In 2004 the Nutrition Research Newsletter reported a "memory" study done in Switzerland, where participants were divided into groups with varying stages of cognitive problems.

Heavy menstruation is linked to iron deficiency anemia due to the excess blood loss, and pregnant and lactating women may become anemic due to their bodies' increased iron needs. Some people, especially elderly people, do not have enough stomach acid, making it difficult for their stomachs to properly digest and assimilate iron. This lack of stomach acid accounts for the high incidence of iron deficiency anemia in the elderly. Iron supplements can prevent or cure anemia in some people. They will not fully help people who lack enough stomach acid to properly digest iron.

MCH may be low due to blood loss or anemia. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC): This is an estimate of the level of hemoglobin (the iron-binding protein that carries oxygen) in a given number of red blood cells. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV): This is the average amount of space occupied by each red blood cell. Causes of a high MCV include liver disease, alcohol abuse, hypothyroidism, reticulocytosis, marrow aplasia, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency, and myelofibrosis. Causes of a low MCV include lead poisoning, chronic kidney failure, hemoglobinopathy, and certain anemias.

This lack of stomach acid accounts for the high incidence of iron deficiency anemia in the elderly. Iron supplements can prevent or cure anemia in some people. They will not fully help people who lack enough stomach acid to properly digest iron. However, they are extremely successful at preventing anemia during pregnancy. In one research study, only 3 percent of pregnant women who received iron supplements became anemic, compared to 30 percent of women who received the placebo.

Identifying the underlying cause of anemia through a complete diagnostic evaluation is essential. When treating anemia, it is critical to support the digestive and immune systems and restore energy through improving the absorption of vital minerals and vitamins, particularly iron. Enzyme therapy supports all of these goals and can also be used to help the body maintain a correct pH balance.

Although preliminary research seemed to indicate that drinking tea could interfere with the body's absorption and use of trace minerals, such as iron, and could, perhaps, increase the risk of anemia and other health concerns, further studies have shown that this is not a significant concern. One study, for example, found that even when rodents were given black tea, green tea, or a green tea extract mixed with water as their sole beverage, the risk of anemia was not increased.

One might expect that, as a result, over time the mutation responsible for sickle cell anemia would have disappeared. This has not been the case. Why? Malaria has plagued humanity for thousands of years7 Even now it affects an estimated 200 million people every year, causing some 2 million deaths. In tropical Africa, for example, it kills about 1 million people annually, most of those being children.8 The disease also contributes to death from other causes, including pneumonia, anemia, and kidney failure.

During the next week his anemia became severe and his complexion turned white. Blood tests at that time showed very low iron, and a red blood cell count of 89 compared to the normal of about 140. His doctor suggested that he take iron pills but he wanted to research natural sources of iron first. Bruce began reading Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices by Dr. Norman Walker. He decided to try one of Dr. Walker's vegetable juice formulas for the treatment of anemia. This consisted of a combination of carrot, celery, parsley, and spinach in certain proportions.

Roughly one out of every 400 Afro-Americans develops sickle cell anemia. In those with this chronic hereditary disease, many of their red blood cells form rigid crescent or sickle shapes that cannot pass through capillaries. Affected children often die during adolescence of strokes, heart disease, and infections. Sickle cell anemia also causes sufferers painful, unpredictable health crises. Those children who survive are underweight and slow to mature.5 How is it that a genetic, highly damaging disease can be so widespread amongst the Afro-American population in the USA?

INDICATIONS AND USAGE The drug is used for painful menstruation, urinary tract inflammation, chronic cough, rheumatism, anemia and anemic headaches. PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS Hepatotoxicity and carcinogenicity are possible due to the pyrrolizidine alkaloids with 1,2-unsaturated necic parent substances in its makeup. It should not be taken internally for this reason. DOSAGE Mode of Administration: The drag is used externally. Preparation: The lotion is made using 1 part of the drag and 5 parts of 10% ethanol.
In folk medicine, it is used as a tonic, an appetite stimulant, for respiratory complaints, for secondary anemia and for unspecific geriatric complaints. PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS The drug is severely toxic, due to the strychnine content. OVERDOSAGE Symptoms of poisoning can occur after ingestion of one bean. Strychnine doses of 5 mg (30-50 mg of the drug) initially cause restlessness, feelings of anxiety, heightening of sense perception, enhanced reflexes, equilibrium disorders, and painful stiffness of the neck and back musculature.

As many as 20 percent of menstruating women may have iron-related anemia because their monthly blood loss produces an iron deficiency. That may be the case in as much as half of all pregnant women as well—they're not menstruating, but the passenger they're carrying is hungry for iron too!) Without enough iron our immune system functions poorly, the skin gets pale, and people can feel confused, dizzy, cold, and extremely fatigued. Iron even explains why some areas of the world's ocean are crystal clear blue and almost devoid of life, while others are bright green and teeming with it.

OVERDOSAGE myrtilli folium The signs of poisoning observed in animal experiments (including, among others, cachexia, anemia, icterus) appeared only in conjunction with the chronic administration of high dosages and are presumably effects of the tannins, that could also be realized with any other tanning agent. DOSAGE myrtilli folium Preparation: To prepare an infusion, pour boiling water over 1 g finely cut drug (1 teaspoonful = approximately 0.6g) and strain after 10 to 15 minutes. Not to be taken over a long duration.
In folk medicine, wormwood preparations are used internally for gastric insufficiency, intestinal atonia, gastritis, stomachache, liver disorders, bloating, anemia, irregular menstruation, intermittent fever, loss of appetite, and worm infestation. Externally, the drug is applied for poorly healing wounds, ulcers, skin blotches, and insect bites. The above mentioned popular indications are insufficiently documented.
In severe cases, overdosage may lead to acute hemolytic anemia with fever, ictems, hemoglobinuria, oliguria and anuria (favism). Elevations in blood pressure are also possible, because of the L-DOPA content. The treatment of the favism can be carried out through transfusion of washed erythrocytes and through administration of prednisone. DOSAGE Mode of Administration: Broad Bean preparations are now obsolete. LITERATURE Chevion M, Maer J, Glaser G, Naturally occuring food toxicant: favism-producing agents.

Cats eating niacin-deficient diets develop "black tongue" hemorrhagic diarrhea, anemia, and reddening and ulceration of the mucous membranes of the tongue and mouth. If this inadequacy is not corrected, emaciation and death eventually occur. Humans face similar diseases if their diets are vitamin B-3 deficient. Vitamins-as-Prevention How did the modern diet become so deficient in certain nutrients that we can no longer scavenge adequate amounts? Food processing would seem to be the chief cause, although depletion of soil nutrients may also be implicated.

A lack of folate is also directly linked to anemia, because folate helps to produce red blood cells. the skin, as you've probably heard, is the largest organ of the human body. It's an organ in every sense of the word, responsible for important functions related to the immune system, the nervous I ne v_.nuiesi.erui aviso mses system, the circulatory system, and metabolism. The skin protects the body's stores of folate, and it's in the skin that a crucial step in the manufacturing of vitamin D takes place.

Some researchers have speculated that women who had hemochromatosis might have benefited from the additional iron absorbed through their diet because it prevented anemia caused by menstruation. This, in turn, led them to have more children, who also carried the hemochromatosis mutation. Even more speculative theories have suggested that Viking men may have offset the negative effects of hemochromatosis because their warrior culture resulted in frequent blood loss.
Today, we understand much more about the complex interrelationship of our bodies, iron, infection, and conditions like hemochromatosis and anemia. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. Which is probably some version of what Aran Gordon was thinking when he finished the Marathon des Sables for the second time in April 2006—just a few months after he was supposed to have died. CHAPTER II A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR HELPS THE TEMPERATURE GO DOWN The World Health Organization estimates that 171 million people have diabetes—and that number is expected to double by 2030.
Today many researchers believe that a genetic trait far more prevalent than sickle-cell anemia or thalassemia may also provide protection against malaria—G6PD deficiency. In two large case-controlled studies, researchers found that children with the African variant of the G6PD mutation had twice the resistance to P. falciparum, the most severe type of malaria, that children without the mutation had. Laboratory experiments confirmed this— given a choice between "normal" red blood cells or G6PD-deficient red blood cells, the malarial-causing parasites preferred the normal cells time after time.

Inadequate iron will lead to anemia, where not enough hemoglobin is available to distribute oxygen adequately. Iron deficiency may also cause you to lose your hair or cause you to have a headache. You may start to catch every bug that comes around and get infections more easily. Brittle nails are also a sign of iron deficiency. Like zinc, iron is a part of many essential enzyme reactions. It is needed for good immune system function and for the liver's ability to get rid of toxic substances.
Lack of this nutrient is one cause of anemia. It may contribute to neuropathy, a common and potentially painful consequence of diabetes. Serious deficiency can also cause constipation, sore tongue, and loss of appetite, probably due to changes in the GI tract lining. Anyone with B12 levels below 150 picomoles per liter (pmol/L) is considered deficient. But you don't need to test your levels, especially if you are using metformin or have diabetes: chances are very good that adding more will improve your health.
The consequences of folate depletion may include anemia, cervical dysplasia (a precursor to cervical cancer), and high homocysteine. For information on the many roles of folate, and the ways in which depletion can be harmful, turn to the section on Folic AcidVFolate on page 49. Women who become pregnant while low in folate run the risk of having a baby with serious spinal cord defects. This is why it's recommended that all women of child-bearing age, and especially, those who are pregnant, take 800 micrograms (meg) of folic acid daily.
