In their study, the Joslin researchers compared the metabolic processes of normal mice with those of a second group that had been genetically altered to reduce the number of insulin receptors in their brains. The altered mice experienced reduced insulin activity signaling the proteins in their brains. As a result, they developed an increase in the amount of chemical modification (phosphorylation) of tau proteins that is a hallmark of brain lesions in Alzheimer's disease. |

In 1970, Wallace announced his discovery of a "fourth major state of consciousness" in the flagship journal Science:
Physiologically, the state produced by transcendental meditation seems to be distinct from commonly encountered states of consciousness, such as wakefulness, sleep, and dreaming, and from altered states of consciousness, such as hypnosis and autosuggestion.23
Wallace's principal focus in this article was the phenomenon of altered states of consciousness. |

Frequency and amplitude are changed, and the signal is altered all because of the subluxation." Nerve impulses, according to chiropractic theory, are messenger systems for the innate wisdom of the body. They tell the lungs to breathe, the liver to detox, and the heart to beat.
"If the signal is altered because of the subluxation," Mannino told me, "the tissues have no other choice than to respond. If it's asthma, they overrespond. If it's a nerve going to the stomach, the digestive process is slowed. If cells aren't instructed to break down food, you're going to have a toxic buildup. |

These bacteria have been altered to increase the bacteria's production of riboflavin. The genes of the bacteria may also have been altered by the addition of antibiotic resistance to ampicillin. This is one possible difference between synthetic and naturally-occurring riboflavin.
Heat does not normally degrade riboflavin. However, ultraviolet light and other forms of irradiation including visible light destroy riboflavin, as shown in Figure 1-8. |

Interaction with the new animal foods altered our forbears', and consequently our own, genetic ability to manufacture a vitamin necessary for life. Pretty powerful stuff: something you eat a lot of can control or change your genes!
As the chart "Evolution of the Human Diet" on the opposite page demonstrates, our diet has evolved from that of early humans, to those of hunter-gatherers, to the diet resulting from the Agricultural Revolution, and finally to our modern diet. In that time, calorie-dense and micronutrient-sparse food has supplanted micronutrient-dense and calorie-sparse food. |

Commercial interests in North America are fighting this trend because they realize that once labels identifying foods as genetically altered appear, consumers will start avoiding them.
On the surface, one might think that altering foods genetically is better for the farmers and better for consumers. But, look a little closer. Food that has been natural since its time on earth began has now had its genetic structure changed by humans. A problem develops: if the food's genetic structure has changed, so has its electrical structure. The human body thrives only on natural food. |
| Food that has not been genetically altered. Living, structured water. Green smoothies.
Freshly prepared fruit and vegetable juices.
Alkaline ash forming foods—raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. (Except for peanuts and peanut butter which are difficult to digest, contain the least calcium, and are the most allergenic of the nuts.) Whole grains. Sprouted grains are easiest to digest. Acid-forming foods in moderation. (See appendices 1 to 4) Foods in compatible digestive combinations.
Digestive enzymes, when eating cooked, processed, or irradiated foods. |
| Mary Enig points out that poor research practices were also to blame: "The problems for coconut oil started four decades ago when researchers fed animals hydrogenated coconut oil that was purposefully altered to make it completely devoid of any essential fatty acids."42 As already pointed out, the hydrogenation of oils produces trans fats, which are very unhealthy. Here was another example of deceit for commercial gain at the expense of people's health.
Coconut oil is classed as a medium-chain saturated fatty acid (mcfa). Since the body does not store it as fat, it:

Lyell was confident that such venerable trees could never regrow in the altered landscape. "From the time taken to acquire the above dimensions, we may confidently infer that no such trees will be seen by posterity, after the clearing of the country, except where they may happen to be protected for ornamental purposes."24 Tobacco, cotton, and corn were replacing the forest of immense trees that had covered the landscape for ages. Bare and exposed, the virgin soil bled off the landscape with every new storm. |

Many physicists now are willing to admit that if the Standard Model is to survive, it must be radically altered. However, even altering the theory may not be enough. As Kane asserts, "In expressing these mysteries, when I say the Standard Model cannot explain a given phenomenon, I do not mean that the theory has not yet explained it but might do so one day. The Standard Model is a highly constrained theory, and it cannot ever explain the phenomena [listed in his article]. |
| Instead, it should be possible to correct what we might call 'phase errors' between the In waves and the Out waves, which can lead to pathology, because it may be that the structure or shape of space is altered by all of these phase relationships. Every cell in the body, and in all of biology, has a characteristic phase shift value, and these are used as identifiers in NES technology, especially in relation to the Energetic Integrators. |

Cells become altered and are no longer able to reproduce themselves in their original healthy form; they reproduce as diseased cells. If this toxic process continues, the body dies. Cancer cells, for example, are a result of this process. Cells that were healthy have now changed structure and function. They have mutated. Whereas healthy cells utilize oxygen, cancer cells use carbon dioxide. They function similar to plant cells, and increase in size by storing the body's own toxic wastes. The cancer spreads as oversized cells automatically divide and multiply. |

| Yeast infections can also be caused when the pH of the vagina is altered, creating a favorable environment for Candida growth. The pH of the vagina can be altered by frequent sex, because semen creates a more alkaline environment in the vagina. It can also be altered by the use of commercial douches, which in general cause a lot more unpleasant odors than they cover up.
Fortunately, vaginal yeast infections are usually easy to treat, especially when caught early. |

Further, the more the original food has been altered, the less you should eat it. Finally, the more you extend a food's shelf life, the more it will shorten your life. Now, try to memorize these Gundryisms: žIf it's meat, you get to cheat. žIf it's green, you'll grow lean. žGive fruit the boot. žIf it's white, keep it out of sight. žIf it's beige, behave. žIf it's brown, slow down. žWhen in doubt, leave it out. žLose weight fast, say goodbye to muscle mass! žWeight off fast will never last; weight off slow, you're good to go! žEat green or brown oil, and your belly fat will recoil. |

My patients are familiar with the following question: "If it is found that you are low in a hormone, and you are given a choice of a natural, bioidentical hormone—one that closely mimics your own hormone chemically and structurally, versus a synthetic hormone—a man-made derivative of a hormone that has been structurally altered to become a patentable product, which one would you pick?" A vast scientific knowledge base is not needed to realize a natural, bioidentical hormone will perform better than a synthetic hormone every time. |
| Hormones that have been chemically altered are termed synthetic hormones.
Synthetic hormones are not naturally occurring substances in the body. In fact, synthetic hormones are not found in any living forms. Synthetic hormones can therefore be thought of as foreign substances to the body. Because they are foreign substances to the body, is there any wonder that there are so many serious side effects with the use of synthetic hormones? Examples of synthetic hormones include Provera*, Prempro? Premarin? birth control pills, etc. |

| In older adults, for example, tiny strokes that cause changes to the prefrontal cortex—a part of the brain that seems to be involved in depression—can lead to depression symptoms, such as altered sleep and appetite and impaired self-image. Some doctors call this "vascular depression."
Thyroid disorders that affect hormone levels can be a direct cause of depression, while painful ailments, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can be an indirect cause. Fortunately, these types of depression are quite treatable with medication and other therapies. |

We know, too, that phase can be altered when there are abrupt changes in electromagnetic waves, and this may relate to what we call shock in NES and in natural health care in general. A shock or trauma to the system—physical, emotional, or bioenergetic—may have adverse effects on health, especially in the development of cancer."
Peter further explained that "every cell in the body, and in all of biology, has a characteristic phase shift value, and these are used as identifiers in NES technology. |

First, you must be calm and relaxed, so that your body can respond more easily to an altered breathing pattern. If necessary, do the relaxation exercise from page 57 before you begin the Controlled Breathing Pattern. Practise for about 5-10 minutes per day. It may take some time for your body to become accustomed to this changed breathing—weeks, even months.
The long-term goal is to be able to breathe out for 30 seconds. There are many times during the day you can practise: when sitting quietly, walking slowly, waiting at traffic lights and, especially, when in bed before going to sleep. |

The Natural-Source Vitamin E Association states that natural vitamin E can only exist in a chemically altered, esterified, form. It is this chemically altered form of natural vitamin E that is used in their studies. This form of vitamin E is known to have no antioxidant function in the body. This is not the form to use when testing the effectiveness of vitamin E. The best and most active form of vitamin E is the un-esterified, all-natural mixed tocopherol form, consisting of alpha, beta gamma, and delta tocopherols. This is also the more expensive form. |

Gastric bypass surgery was once reserved for the morbidly obese. It is being promoted as a glamorous way to lose weight with various celebrities on covers of magazines and in the media. The body repairs altered fats and DNA in a similar matter. It is critical that you understand that the body has an amazing built-in ability to heal itself.
As I reflect on the complex nature of this repair system and the functions of the cell, I know beyond doubt this is no random act of nature. During my first year of medical school, I studied the anatomy and function of the eye. As I observed the intricacy of the structure, I realized that this object could never have been the result of accidental chance and random selection. |

Cancer Factors
The following factors contribute to the development of cancer:
• Pro-carcinogens: initially harmless substances that may be altered in the body to induce cancer.
Examples: The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are present in condensed smoke from cigarettes, automobile emissions, grilled foods, fireplace residues, and the like are examples. Largely inert by themselves, liver enzymes can attack these substances with reactive oxygen species to produce carcinogens that react with DNA unless intercepted and deactivated. |
| Also, radiation can cause many side effects, including nausea, hair loss, diarrhea, fatigue, and altered white blood cell levels, so it is difficult for the patient.
Chemotherapy, the systemic use of anti-cancer drugs that travel throughout the body via the blood vessels, is used in combination with surgery or radiation or both, depending on the severity of a case. Many chemotherapeutic drugs are used in combination, and new chemotherapeutic agents are added to the arsenal all the time. |
| The spent antioxidant is then either "recycled" by yet another antioxidant to prevent its becoming a free radical itself or remains in an altered state but with a structure such that it does not damage any other molecules.
The body depends on many vitamins and minerals to act as antioxidants, and the list of compounds that can act as antioxidants is impressively long. The best free-radical protection comes from a diverse intake of antioxidants.
Plant foods are an abundant source of antioxidant nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and E, and the carotenoids. |
