Although there is no "cure" for aging, my clinical experience has shown that natural hormones, when used appropriately, can slow down many of the signs of aging including deteriorating mental function, loss of muscle tone, and wrinkled skin. Hormone production peaks when we are young, usually in the age range from 20 to 30. In older people, supplementation with natural, bioidentical hormones can reverse many of the signs of aging. Synthetic hormones do not provide the same anti-aging benefits as natural, bioidentical hormones. |

Immortality would halt the advancement of civilization
To see why, consider this thought experiment: Imagine if there were an aging vaccine that cost $100, and you could go to the doctor's office and get injected with it, and then would never age another day, even if you live forever. A huge percentage of the population might avail themselves of this aging vaccine, but before long, we would start to have a real population problem in the world because new people are being born all the time, but suddenly almost no one is dying of old age. |

Free Radicals and DNA Damage
The most widely accepted theory of aging is based on the idea that unstable molecules called free radicals damage DNA. Free radicals form in the body as a by-product of the processes that break down food for energy, fight infections, and detoxify hazardous chemicals. They are also found in pollutants, such as automobile exhaust, cigarette smoke, copy machine fumes, and other types of air pollution. Still more free radicals are generated when tissues are exposed to radiation, such as ultraviolet rays in sunlight or the ionizing radiation of an X-ray. |
| Many researchers believe that free-radical damage to mitochondria lies at the root of the entire aging process, which will be discussed further in chapter 4.
Inherited Mitochondrial DNA Defects
Many of the insights into mitochondria, DNA damage, and energy originated with studies of people with inherited or congenital diseases called mitochondrial myopathies. (Myopathies are diseases that affect muscle cells.) People with mitochondrial myopathies have damaged or missing segments of mitochondrial DNA, which reduces their body's production of energy. |
| Finally, Part IV describes how stress affects genes, suggests antistress nutrients you can take, and makes specific recommendations for reducing genetic damage that occurs in aging, heart disease, cancer, some inherited diseases, and many other conditions.
The bottom line of Feed Your Genes Right is that you do not have to wait years to apply the new and exciting discoveries of nutri-genomics, the science of nutrition and genetics. You can utilize existing knowledge to improve your health today and to set the stage for an active, healthy, and long life. |
| The merging of these two fields sheds new light on the process of aging and the causes of human degenerative diseases.
Not only does Feed Your Genes Right explain the scientific understanding of nutrition and genetic disease, but also the sound, knowledgeable advice on treatment and prevention given is put into understandable and practical terms in an achievable program of practical dietary improvement. Following the nutritional and lifestyle advice in this book will help prevent the degenerative diseases all too common in our twenty-first-century world.

| The most widely held theory of aging centers on the destructive molecules called free radicals, which primarily leak out of energy-producing chemical reactions in cells. These chemical reactions are necessary for life—they break down blood sugar and fats for energy—and so life, ironically, contains the seeds for age-related gene damage and death. Other free radicals form as a result of detoxification activities, such as breaking down air pollutants and pesticides, as well as of immune activity, such as when white blood cells use free radicals to destroy infectious bacteria. |
| In fact, low-grade inflammation is known to increase with age, partly reflecting increased immune-cell activity to dispose of aging, malfunctioning, and dead cells. Chronic psychological stresses increase levels of the stress hormone Cortisol, which in turn elevates blood glucose and insulin and helps set the stage for abdominal obesity.
What You Can Do
With this age-related genetic deterioration comes a decline in our assimilation and utilization of all nutrients. |

Attitude is everything with aging," says Dr. Andrew Weil, author of Spontaneous Remission and several other books. He cites studies that show that negative perceptions about aging can shorten our lives, while positive beliefs prolongs them: older people with positive attitudes about aging were found to live 772 years longer than those with negative attitudes. |

Repeated sunburns increase the risk of developing skin cancer, and can also cause signs of premature aging such as wrinkles. Burns result from the ultraviolet (UV) radiation produced by the sun, and can happen within 30 minutes of exposure. UVA and UVB are different wavelengths in the light spectrum. UVB is more damaging to the skin and is linked to skin cancer, while both UVA and UVB are responsible for premature aging and sunburn. Tanning beds also produce UVA and UVB rays and improper tanning bed use can cause sunburn.

A huge percentage of the population might avail themselves of this aging vaccine, but before long, we would start to have a real population problem in the world because new people are being born all the time, but suddenly almost no one is dying of old age. Before long, it would become apparent to all of the adults in society -- that is, those who have attained immortality -- that the fixed resources on the planet Earth can only support a fixed a number of people, therefore, to support the lives of all of those already there, they will have to limit new births.
You can see where this is going. |

Free radical damage is often equated with the aging process because the negative effects of aging are associated with loss of cell function. Antioxidants are molecules that counteract the effects of free radicals because they give their own electrons to free radicals and so prevent them from taking electrons from the atoms in cells. Because the equatorial axis appears to link energetically to these molecules, it may be an important bioenergetic link to the aging process. |

Most health experts agree that the "free radical theory of aging" holds the most promise for understanding—and slowing—the aging process. Free radical "hits" on cells and their essential components accumulate over time, producing the signs and symptoms of aging: premature death, heart disease, cancer, dimming cognition, cataracts, and wrinkles. If free radicals are the problem, then antioxidants are, without a doubt, the solution. According to Dr. |

With accelerated aging, bodies break down sooner than they would otherwise, resulting in many different symptoms and the early onset of various diseases.
What are the exact links between diabetes and aging? First, high blood-sugar levels trigger a biological chain reaction that leads to the increased production of free radicals. These destructive molecules damage genes, cell proteins, and membranes, diminishing cell function throughout your body. |

The sun is at its strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and should be avoided as much as possible during these hours. Remember that it is possible to get burnt on overcast days too, as clouds do not block out UV rays. The sun is also stronger in regions close to the equator, and places at high altitudes. |

Even the heart shrinks with aging. If the body is not equipped to handle that surfacing mercury efficiently through normal detoxification pathways, it will inflict more harm and intensify existing inflammation. Recirculating toxins may move into more critical areas like the brain and heart. As you can imagine, this will hasten the aging process.

Elder abuse
James Goodwin, a geriatrician at the University of Texas Medical Branch, argues that when it comes to aging patients, treating risk factors with invasive procedures like carotid endarterectomy borders on assault. In an eloquent and disturbing essay published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Goodwin writes about the medicalization of aging, the tendency for doctors and patients to see the inevitable breakdown of the body as a series of treatable diseases.
So little of what is done for old people seems aimed in any direct way at making the patient feel better. |

| A common problem associated with aging is neurological damage. Administration of acetyl-L-carnitine at either 1 or 2 grams per day for seven days improves symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Patients with some types of facial paralysis receiving doses of 3 grams a day of acetyl-L-carnitine, along with 50 mg of methylprednisolone for two weeks, experienced significant recovery of nerve function.
There is evidence to suggest that acetyl-L-carnitine may be effective in cases of heart disease and stroke. |

| In a Diabetes Care 1999 article,12 the authors explain that nocturnal hypoglycemia, hypoglycemia unawareness, and aging provide a recipe for sudden death. The pharmaceuticals in this case blamed the results on aging and patient stupidity, while anecdotal evidence points to human insulin. After the introduction of human insulin, the iatrogenic sudden death rate went from 4% to 13% —an increase of over 300%! Only those focused on unconscionable profits could ignore this anecdotal evidence.
