In 2002, when wild oats became one of the first companies to embrace the new technology, the cost of the "corntainers" was high. As one of the first customers, the company paid about 50 percent more for takeout containers made from the bioplastic instead of fossil fuels.22 Nonetheless, wild oats found that its customers liked the new corntainers, and the natural food retailer credits the corntainers with increasing deli sales by 12 percent. Today, the company has switched to corn-based plastic in eighty of its wild oats Natural Marketplace stores. |

Boycott Aurora's "organic" milk from Wal-Mart, Costco, Safeway, wild oats and other retailers. Pester the USDA with concerned letters and refuse to be suckered by a wealthy dairy corporation that has now made the Organic Consumers Association its enemy.
One final question: If Aurora really cared about being organic, why wouldn't they simply agree to meet the standards described by the OCA? Why does Aurora send in the legal team instead of upgrading its operations in a way that would earn the goodwill of the OCA? There is nothing, in my opinion, being asked by the OCA that isn't reasonable. |

Nearly everything on the market today -- including the skin care products sold at "natural" retailers like Whole Foods and wild oats -- is loaded with chemical additives and harmful ingredients. It's rare to find a company that makes genuinely healthful products for skin care. Pangea Organics (www.PangeaOrganics.com) is one such company that I've recommended for some time, and I recently found a new company from California that takes skin care products to a whole new medicinal level: Their products use herbs from the world of Chinese Medicine to enhance health while nourishing the skin. |
| It seems like you go to Whole Foods or wild oats and there are all these natural products, quite an abundance, especially of facial products. You get it home, you are reading the ingredients, and there are all these parabens and chemical preservatives. It seems like almost half of the ingredients are not natural. It seems so wrong to call your products natural just because you use a few botanical ingredients.
Mike: Yes, we see that a lot in the marketplace. Something will be labeled herbal skin care or the word "herbal" will be in it and it is only one herb. It is not even the main ingredient. |

I'm not entirely sold on wild oats. But the herb is rich in boron, a trace mineral that can substantially raise blood levels of testosterone, the hormone that stimulates the sex drive in both men and women. Look for a commercial preparation and take it according to the package directions. yinyanghuo (epimedium, various species). |

One cup of wild oats Performance Crunch Cereal has 230 calories and 39 grams of carbs, of which 20 grams are sugars. The sugars come from evaporated cane juice and brown rice syrup, which are listed in the fine print on the package.
Despite their warm and fuzzy names, soft drinks in health food stores are no better than their supermarket cousins. A 12-ounce can of Blue Sky Natural soda contains 160 calories and 42 grams of sugars from "glucose-fructose syrup," which sounds suspiciously like high-fructose corn syrup. Similarly, a can of Boyland's Cane Cola has 41 grams of sugars. |

Lovejoy: It's actually very, very good for your immune system. It's an immune-boosting product. It's wonderful for that. It's also detoxifying and cleansing, but more on a gentle basis. |

Trader Joe's
One of the critical influences today on organic food pricing, Trader Joe's, the privately held, ridiculously low-priced food chain that began in Southern California, is the biggest competition natural supermarket chains Whole Foods and wild oats face.
Trader Joe's always has the lowest pricing for certified organic foods. The Trader Joe's factor in the health food industry is widely discussed, and they are one reason why prices at natural food markets are becoming more competitive. |

Avena sativa is Latin for "wild oats." The sexual stimulation resulting from the consumption of this herb is said to be the source of the phrase "sowing one's wild oats." Stallions fed wild oats are said to become libidinous, and some studies suggest that "wild oats" have a similar effect on the human male.
EVIDENCE OF BENEFIT

Navigating Natural Food Stores
As a general rule, natural food stores, such as Whole Foods, wild oats, Vitamin Cottage, and the many independent natural food stores, offer more wholesome foods than you'll find in a typical supermarket; however, some so-called natural foods are little more than knockoffs of supermarket products. They may sound and look more healthy, but they can pack plenty of calories, carbs, and sugars.
The natural food and health food industry has long been wedded to whole grains, such as whole-wheat bread. |

The lawsuits allege that Aurora Organic Dairy Corporation, which supplies organic milk to Wal-Mart, wild oats, Target, Costco, Safeway, and other retailers, is engaged in "consumer fraud, negligence, and unjust enrichment" by failing to adhere to USDA organic standards even while selling its milk under the organic label.
Federal investigators have already found Aurora in violation of organic standards, according to the Cornucopia Institute, and the USDA has warned Aurora over multiple "willful" violations of organic standards. |

You will be able to find many healthy equivalents in natural food stores such as Whole Foods, wild oats, and Vitamin Cottage. For example, most commercial brands of mayonnaise, such as Kraft, use soybean oil, which is not as healthy as other oils. Most natural food stores carry Spectrum Naturals Canola Mayonnaise, which uses naturally processed canola oil, pasteurized eggs, honey, and other natural ingredients. Peanut butter is another example. |

The habit of many men to "sow their wild oats" in youth was, in Hill's opinion, largely responsible for their failure to distinguish themselves until after the age of forty. Great geniuses, Hill averred, succeeded precisely to the extent that they redirected their sexual desire away from physical expression and "transmuted" it into more fruitful ambitions.
Gorging and Fasting
The sex drive, of course, is not the only primitive stimulant to which the mind is subject. Animals in the wild are driven just as powerfully by their hunger for food. |
